TEXT: Psychopathology : Foundations for a Contemporary Understanding

Original Question:

For this week's Forum, respond to the following:  What is the primary distinguishing feature between Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa? Review the research findings on societal and familial factors which can contribute to the manifestation and maintenance of these disorders.

Reply to the following response with 200 words minimum. (please make response as if having a conversation, respond directly to some of the statements in below post. This is not providing an analysis of the original post. Respectfully address it and even ask clarifying or additional questions.)

While both anorexia nervosa and bulimia are marked by a hyper-drive for thinness and a disturbance in eating behavior, the biggest difference in diagnoses is that anorexia nervosa is a syndrome of self-starvation relating noteworthy weight loss of 15 percent or more of ideal body weight, while patients with bulimia nervosa are, by classification, at normal weight or above. Bulimia is categorized by a cycle of binge-eating, dieting, and compensatory riddance behavior with the goal of preventing weight gain (Winstead & Maddux, 2012). When underweight persons with anorexia nervosa also engage in bingeing and purging behavior the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa surpasses that of bulimia. Excessive exercise aimed at weight loss can manifest in both anorexia nervosa and in bulimia.

Societal factors are characterized by an over-emphasis on thinness either for a belief that it enhances beauty, athletics, or popularity. Women with eating disorders tend to be perfectionistic, eager to please others, sensitive to criticism, and self-doubting while being uncomfortable adapting to change. Eating disorders have many causes which are often triggered by stressful life events, such as relationship difficulties; loss or trauma; physical illness; or a life change such as entering adolescents, starting college, pregnancy, or marriage. Mood disturbance is tremendously common in bulimia nervosa and symptoms of anxiety and tension are frequently experienced. Self-denigrating thoughts might be prevalent whilst low self-esteem and physical self-loathing may have been brought on by a past experience of physical or sexual abuse. Self-harm, commonly by scratching or cutting, is not uncommon(Mennitto, 2015).

An eating disorder might progress in association with another psychiatric illness such as a depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or substance abuse. Current research indicates some people are more genetically predisposed to developing an eating disorder than others. Family and twin studies suggest that genes predispose to an eating disorder and genetic studies are currently underway to attempt to isolate genes involved in the development of eating disorders. Abnormalities in the brain's serotonergic and dopaminergic systems are thought to play a role in the cause and or maintenance of eating disorders (Mennitto, 2015).

How would you begin investigating the complaint mentioned?

What kind of morale problems might results from an inadequate investigation?

Be sure to include the full source of the article

Book Assignment #2

Instructions:

Act as a newspaper editor that argues for the contemporary relevance of the book’s argument. Pick a contemporary theme—religious liberty, gun control, immigration, etc.—that you feel the book adds important context to. Then write an op-ed for a fictional newspaper explaining why this historical episode is important for today.

Example:

The Supreme Court’s ruling that allowed same-sex marriage in the United States has ushered in a crucial moment for American culture. The recent controversy over Kentucky’s county clerk Kim Davis is just an extreme example of the tensions rife within a pluralist society. But how do we function as a community with such different opinions on crucial topics? JK Rowling’s Harry Potter, an examination of the cultural tensions found within the famed school of Hogwarts, shows one example of how these divisions played out, and how a more charitable acceptance of diverging ways of life ended up triumphing over parochial squabbles…

Midterm Exam

Instructions: The exam is comprised of six (6) essay type questions. Each question must be answered using no less than 150 words.

1. Discuss the factors that go into creating a hostile work environment. Why is this a bad thing? Give an example of a hostile work environment.

2. Compare and contrast the stakeholder and shareholder models of corporate governance.

3. We all learn values from sources such as family, religion, and school. Why might these sources of individual values not prove very helpful when making complex business decisions?

4. Society often expects a lot from business. Do you think that it is possible to balance profit and other business objectives with the goals and desires of society? Why or why not?

5. The ethical decision-making framework includes the concepts of ethical issue intensity, individual factors, organizational factors, and opportunity. Discuss how these concepts influence the ethical decision-making process.

6. Discuss the distinctions between the rule and act categories of utilitarianism and deontology. Why do you think some people evaluate the morality of an action on the basis of the action itself, whereas others evaluate it in terms of its conformity to particular moral principles or rules of conduct?

Focus on topic Catering.

Your homework for this week is designed to help you prepare your idea presentations next week as well as help you make some final pivots or modifications to your idea. This (along with all readings and quizzes) is DUE BEFORE your next class session.

The first three questions help you finalize your idea and can be used to present your idea next week. Following this is a self-assessment that helps you understand where you are in the process (ie, have you explored, researched, and thought about your ideas sufficiently). You should be getting the grade you deserve in this course so if you have not done much work you should expect to get bad to mediocre grade; If you have worked hard, thought deeply, and followed directions you should get a good grade.

Finally, you will work to identify some of the key assumptions that you have made that could either undermine your idea or limit it unnecessarily. Remember anything you think you know but do not have strong evidence for is an assumption. We are looking for two separate lists of assumptions and if you watched the videos carefully this week you should understand what these questions are focused on: 1) assumptions that are necessary for your idea to function but could undermine your idea if they are not true are unknowns that you can research; 2) assumptions that may restrict your thinking and limit your ideas impact or feasibility are assumptions that could or should be 'busted' / overturned.

It is difficult to identify your own assumptions so please take some time to think about this and / or share your ideas with others to hear what they think.

Toulmin Schema Worksheet

Now that you have completed the Research Plan and the Stasis Model, we will begin the process of testing our argument and gathering more information specifically to support our position. Make sure that you gather good, credible information and that you cite your sources in the body of the outline. Please consult the examples folder if you have questions, or you may contact me any time.

Toulmin Schema Worksheet

In English 2010 we use the Toulmin Schema to test our arguments and to develop a detailed outline of our Persuasive Research papers. One of the reasons it is useful in this process is that it focuses primarily on what we can validate with research or logic (logos) instead of relying on the emotional responses that often limit our research and discussion about many topics. We can then add appeals to emotion (pathos) that are useful to our specific audience as we prepare to write the essay. The following version of Toulmin is tailored specifically to English 2010 and designed to test the working thesis sentence developed in the policy proposal portion of the Stasis Model.

Claim: This should be the first part of your newly developed working thesis sentence

Reasons: This are the ‘because’ clauses of your working thesis statement

Assumptions: What assumptions do you have about the topic and why? What points of agreement (values) do you and your audience share? According to your research, what are the presumed assumptions your audience has about the topic and why?

Backing: Think of this as a place to list the evidence, both personal and researched, which supports your claim and reasons. This will be the longest portion of the essay.

(Personal/Brainstorming)

(Cited Research)

Conditions of Rebuttal: What are other people saying about your topic? How will they attack your position? What are their strongest points? Be sure to explore each point in detail, gathering source information to fully understand why people hold that position and to more fully evaluate the counterargument.

Qualifier: Revised thesis statement based on the conditions of rebuttal. What can you still realistically argue? Are there ways to adjust your thesis to include some ideas from the rebuttals or a way to counter them by changing the thesis?

New Operation: Can Wal-Mart eCommerce compete with Amazon

Section 2
a) Intended Strategy
b) Type of case, e.g. management, marketing, finance, etc. and WHY
c) Who are you relative to solving the case
d) Timeframe for achieving an outcome, and WHY

Section 5
This is the actual analysis section where you LITERALLY complete the work. If you say you will do a SWOT then the actual SWOT appears here. All financial analysis work will appear here. This should be a rather lengthy section of your case. There
doesn’t need to be any narrative in this section, just your actual analysis, nicely presented of course.

Assignment: Asthma

Complications of asthma can be sudden. Consider the case of Bradley Wilson, a young boy who had several medical conditions. He appeared in good health when he went to school, returned home, and ate dinner. However, when he later went outside to play, he came back inside wheezing. An ambulance took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead (Briscoe, 2012). In another case, 10-year-old Dynasty Reese, who had mild asthma, woke up in the middle of the night and ran to her grandfather’s bedroom to tell him she couldn’t breathe. By the time paramedics arrived, she had passed out and was pronounced dead at the hospital (Glissman, 2012). These situations continue to outline the importance of recognizing symptoms of asthma and providing immediate treatment, as well as distinguishing minor symptoms from serious, life-threatening symptoms. Since these symptoms and attacks are often induced by a trigger, as an advanced practice nurse, you must be able to help patients identify their triggers and recommend appropriate treatment options. For this reason, you need to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.
To Prepare
• Review “Asthma” in Chapter 27 of the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Consider how these disorders are similar and different.
• Select a patient factor different from the one you selected in this week’s Discussion: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Think about how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Reflect on how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
• Review the “Mind maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in the Week 2 Learning Resources. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct two mind maps—one for chronic asthma and one for acute asthma exacerbation. Consider the epidemiology and clinical presentation of both chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.
To Complete
Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
• Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Be sure to explain the changes in the arterial blood gas patterns during an exacerbation.
• Explain how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Describe how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for a patient based on the factor you selected.
• Construct two mind maps—one for chronic asthma and one for acute asthma exacerbation. Include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, as well as the diagnosis and treatment you explained in your paper.
By Day 7
This Assignment is due.
Note: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available at http://writingcenter.waldenu.edu/57.htm). All papers submitted must use this formatting.
