An Analysis of "Shipping out" Novel

David Wallace's Novel titled "Shipping Out – on the Nearly Lethal Comfort of the Cruise Ships" reflects on a variety of experiences on a cruise. The present  air  journey to the port and the current cruise is detailed. Some of the parts of the novel are entirely comical while others reflect sadness and despair. GOOD OBSERVATION. NOTE: IT'S NOT A NOVEL. IT'S AN ESSAY. The following essay attempts to analyze the variety of experiences on the first five parts of the novel.

Great food and delicacies characterize the initial part of the novel. Joy is at the peak. However, the environment is not very good for the author. I have suffers the  inconvenience  of seeing people who are almost naked. At the same time, the exorbitant cost of being on the cruise which could amount to as much as $ 3,000 is noted. The fact that such a trip only reflects the high level of fiscal profligacy. There is a feeling that such amounts of money should not be used on a cruise that is barely fun and comfortable.

Grief seems to overwhelm an incident of the suicide of a sixteen-year-old boy in the cruise is reported. His lover had hurt the boy. It is regrettable that such a sad event occurs in the mega ship. After all, the ship should be the center of joy among the persons in it.

The author had never been to the sea. After the event when the young boy died, the author notes that he is now filled with fear and dread of the situation. I have indicated that there are developing feelings of despair in the mega-ship. There are high levels of inner sadness which make the author contemplate death. After all, everyone is going to die. The author contemplates jumping overboard in a bid to be away from the pains and sadness of the present moment.

The author reflects on the incident where he was on his way to the Mega-ship. I had to pass through the great O'Hare airport. It turns out that he has to stay with an aged couple who are now on their fourth cruise ship trip in the many years. At this juncture, the author paints a picture of emptiness and an environment that he might not have envisaged. Though I have been told that it was a wholeheartedly at the airport, I have just had a casual talk with the old couple who revealed to him the sadness of the minor who jumped overboard. After all, the cruise does not appear to be as much fun as the author may have thought.

The landing at Fort Lauderdale looks great; the fort is great, and there appears to be an expensive area where one can enjoy some sense of freedom. The author notes that the sea may not be visible at this point. However, the sight of mega ships which appear to cover even significant parts of the sky is amazing. The process of boarding the ship is tedious though the author notes that he is a bit eager to get on a cruise ship for once. A somewhat unwelcoming environment appears to lower the author's expectations; the old people are the majority of the people who are on the cruise. Barely a few couples are present, but even then, the sight of the old ones who appear to be inappropriately dressed in shorts is disgusting.

The text seems to mention the unmet expectations in a very significant role. Therefore, it is prudent to conclude that the entire cruise (from the boarding of the airplane to the current cruise) is a sad affair. At every instance, there is an issue that appears to be hugely disappointing or out of sync with the expectations of the cruise. Even while the author is on the plane, details emerge from a boy who committed suicide aboard a cruise ship. At the same time, the author is uncomfortable with the advanced ages of the participants in the journey. Aboard the mega-ship, the author is overwhelmed with the feelings of despair and considers jumping overboard.
