International Relations

For the paper you will design and solve your own game theoretical model. Essentially, the paper is a self-designed assignment with a full write-up accompanying your analysis. Describe some type of collective behaviour that interests you, then create a game that captures that social situation. Note, you are not limited to just political or economic problems, but any basic social interaction is amendable to modelling. An obvious source of inspiration may be topics from other courses or the news.
Once you identify a topic, define the actors, possible actions and strategies, outcomes and payoffs, the sequence of moves (if appropriate), and what information is available. You should apply the appropriate equilibrium concept for the game. Solve the game and discuss what insight this solution gives us to the problem at hand.
Higher grades will be given for creativity and the quality of the analysis. You should consider something more complicated than a 2×2 simultaneous- move game or basic extensive-form. One way to add complexity is to allow one of the payoffs for an outcome to vary, and see how the equilibrium changes as the payoff varies. Of course, other ways include incorporating more than 2 players and/or strategies, more sequences or repetition of play, and removing information.

The paper should be typewritten and submitted via Wattle. Matrix forms of games can be created by inserting a table. Extensive forms can be drawn elsewhere and inserted as pictures (in Word, you can create from shapes, lines and text boxes). If you require mathematical symbols or Greek letters, use the menus to insert special symbols or a built-in equation editor (Word has one). No literature review is necessary. If any sources inspired the topic (such as a news article), cite it properly. You do not need to cite the textbook, slides or anything else when solving the games (we all know what a Nash Equilibrium is, there is no need to cite the textbook).
