ASSIGNMENT 4 GUIDELINES
Grand Challenges Raising Awareness Project:
Using the Science of Social Work to Help Transform Society (100 POINTS)

Aims of Assignment
The overarching aim of Assignment 4 is to facilitate studentsвЂTM ability to use the science of social work to raise awareness about grand challenges facing social workers and to trigger others to take action to positively impact social work grand challenges. Specific aims of the assignment include the following:

1) To provide students with an opportunity to use social work knowledge and data, as well as technology, in the context of professional practice.
2) To nurture and enhance studentвЂTMs creativity and its role in professional practice and in the translation of empirical evidence.
3) Through their leadership, to help students raise awareness about social workвЂTMs grand challenges and trigger others around the globe to take action that will positively impact the grand challenges.
4) To inspire students to use the science of social work to help transform society.

Background & Approach
Led by the American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare (AASWSW), the Grand Challenges for Social Work is a groundbreaking initiative promoting the use of social work knowledge and science to improve individual and family well-being, strengthen the social fabric, and help create a more just society. The School of Social Work at USC has provided leadership in terms of the conceptualization and development of the Grand Challenges, as well as in responding to the Grand Challenges and implementation of the Grand Challenges.

Guided by our professionвЂTMs mission and values, and its emphasis on the person-in-environment perspective, Assignment 4 asks that you use the knowledge you obtained throughout the semester in order to raise awareness about the identified grand challenge related to the practice problem that you addressed in prior assignments and to trigger others to take action to positively impact that grand challenge. As you know, professional social workers view human behavior and development in relation to and in the context of systems. When working with clients, we attempt to prevent and treat problems faced by clients. At the same time, we attempt to change the societal conditions that create, contribute to, and address problems in living, such as oppression and human rights violations, and structural barriers (see NASW Code of Ethics). In this sense, Assignment 4 can be considered a “social actionвЂк assignment, that is, one in which you advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice by exercising leadership within the professional community.

Assignment 4 consists of two parts. While the first part of your assignment consists of short answer responses, the approach and format of the project presented in the second part of the assignment will be determined by YOU. To complete the assignment, please draw from your previous assignments, course readings, presentations, activities, and other materials. Also consider drawing from your professional and personal experiences.
