The Problem: The Case of the Educational Weekend  You are preparing to introduce a new product on the market during a time when everyone is nervous about the economic future of the country and health care expenses. Because of the economic skittishness, people are unlikely to try a new product. Thus, you need to figure out how to create demand with the public and woo the leaders in the sports medicine field to give your new product a try. You have a request for a $30,000 increase in your budget to the CEO to meet the need. Accounting is also being very conservative and doesn't want to raise your budget until they feel more secure about the projected sales.  One of the investors in your company has a ranch in Idaho. This investor has offered to let you use the ranch, all expenses paid, and bring some of the potential customers and purchasing agents to the ranch for a skiing vacation and the chance to learn about your new product. While the weekend will be billed as a "thank-you for our valued customers", you hope that you can generate enough good will to get more sales. The statement should also clearly present the values in conflict in the problem.  ● Statement of Decision: In a sentence, clearly and concisely state your decision.  ● Reasons for the Decision: In the next paragraph, give the reasons for your decision. As this is an ethical analysis, the reader should be able to see which ethical framework or which ethical principles you are using to come to your decision. However, the words you choose should not be technical, such as "this decision is reversible because…" Rather, you might say – "As each of us considers how we would like to be treated in a similar situation…"  ● Forward-Looking Conclusion: The final sentences should be a summary which builds relationship with the other team members and your constituents, leaves the door open for further conversation, and tells the reader what the decision means for him or her.  PART 5 For this part of the Assignment, you are asked to Be Reflective, as you consider both how you made the decision as well as your response to the Assignment. In this segment you consider how you corrected for personal bias and your own blind spots—hubris—and have attended to the common good.   This part of the Assignment must have citations and references. Use the questions as headings for each section, and write no more than a paragraph on each.  ● Discuss whether or not the ethical analysis made sense. As you considered the section in the Baird text that described the process that those from the deontological school of thought use for ethical analysis, what were the strengths and weaknesses of this process? Ethical maturity is often defined as not only being responsible but also considering others in the decision. Why is considering others important in the particular problem you were asked to resolve?  ● Consider the spiritual perspective—spirituality being defined as that which gives life and work meaning and purpose. As you begin to see yourself in light of the community, how can you (and others in the organization) begin to discipline your desires so you can live fully in the present with faith and trust, avoiding self-righteousness and self-deception?

Art Of Asia

The link below will take you to the Google Art Project page featuring the Freer Gallery which is part of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. Look through the collection and select a work of art from Asia (be sure to pay attention to the creator of the art work and the place it was created, you will only earn credit if you write about a work that was created by an Asian artist.)  It does not have to be a brush painting, although there are several in the collection, it could be a sculpture, scroll or statue but it should be one that you find interesting.  Write a short essay on the work – describing its color, texture, image and why you selected that work. Remember you paper should be organized around a thesis statement.  Don't forget to put your name in the file name and other than the Title, Date, Media and Artist of the work there should be no other biographical information – just your observations and descriptions.

The Practical Role of Policy
What has health policy done for me lately?

Developing health care policy is often an exercise in balancing competing interests, many of them political. Policy is often the product of elaborate negotiations between many interested parties. It is sometimes difficult for individuals to see the connection between health care policies and their own personal health. In short, people ask, "What does health policy mean to me?"

This Application will give you an opportunity to delve a little deeper into the practical role of policy, by examining a health policy issue that is of particular interest to you.

To prepare for this Application, select an acute or chronic health issue (such as motorcycle accident-related head trauma or type 2 diabetes) that is of interest to you. Using the Walden Library and credible websites, research this issue to analyze a key policy related to the health issue you selected. Select at least three articles about the policy to use in your paper.

To complete this Application, write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following:

Describe the health care issue you selected. Explain why this issue is important, in terms of access, affordability, quality, and safety.
Identify a health policy that is related to the health issue you selected. Explain its intended purpose and indicate the source of the policy (i.e., state law, federal law, accreditation organization, etc.)
Cite and summarize the articles you selected.
Analyze what the literature says about the impact of the policy, in terms of cost, affordability, access, quality, and safety.

WRITING LITERARY ARGUMENTS

Most of the essays we write about literature are expository— that is, we write to give information to readers. For example, you might examine the interaction of two characters in a play. Other essays you write may be literary arguments that is, you take a position on a debatable topic and attempt to change readers’ minds about it. The more persuasive your argumentative essay, the more likely readers will be to concede your points and grant your conclusion.

When you write a literary argument, you follow the same process you do when you write any essay about a literary topic. However, because the purpose of an argument is to convince readers, you need to use some additional strategies to present your ideas.

For example, “A Modest Proposal” begins with an account of the impoverished state of many in Ireland. The writer expresses sympathy and the need for a solution. This proposal hopefully will decrease the number of abortions performed by poor mothers. The writer calculates the number of infants born in Ireland and asks what should be done with them. He points out that they are unfit for any employment, being even too young to steal. Neither will merchants buy or sell children. Therefore, it seems like a good idea that the people of Ireland simply eat the infants when they reach the age of one year.

He lists six reasons why it should be adopted:

First, it will decrease the number of dangerous Catholics.

Second, it will give the poor some property.

Third, it will increase the nation’s overall wealth, since people will not have to pay for the upkeep of the children.

Fourth, the mothers will be free of the burden of bringing up children.

Fifth, the new food will be welcomed in taverns and culinary circles.

Sixth, it will enhance the institution of marriage as women take better care of their infants so that they may be sold, and men will take better care of their wives so that their wives can make more babies to sell.

No doubt “A Modest Proposal” is accurately called one of the most effective satires in the English language.

E. Research Paper – Each student will write an 8-page paper on a topic that has been thoroughly researched. The paper needs to be in APA writing style and will include the title page, the abstract page, 5 pages of text, and the reference page.
