If i was in this position i would continue with the hiring process of my trusted friend. I would do this because as the person in charge of hiring and filling positions I have the proper knowledge to make the best decision and put the person I see most fit. 

I would still promote him because if i think that he is the best person for the spot then I will go with whatever i think is best despite the opinions of others.
