Essay Three: The Literary Analysis

The final assignment of the semester will be a literary analysis of one of the major texts we have read this semester. I will encourage you to think about this paper throughout the semester and see if there is a trope, theme, or issue that warrants closer examination in Lee, Baraka, Miller, etc. This assignment will also ask you to engage in the scholarly conversation surrounding these pieces. Therefore you will be asked to find and use three scholarly sources for the assignment (I will provide examples and direction throughout the semester). Examples may include; how Miller deals with ethnicity, how Baraka deals with race, and how Lee deals with the immigrant experience (both immigrants and their children).

 Who’s been Cooking the Books?

Search the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) website under the Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Releases section (http://www.sec.gov/divisions/enforce/friactions.shtml)

2) Identify 1 company that has been investigated by the SEC for improper or fraudulent accounting. For example, suppose you are interested in companies that have manipulated income tax expense in order to increase net income. If you type “tax expense”, you will see that ConAgra Foods, Inc. had an SEC investigation related to this issue in 2007.

3) Read the Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Release to find the main points of what happened at the company and of what they were accused.

4) If your company is accused of multiple different frauds, you can pick the one fraud that interests you and ignore the other frauds.

5) Find the company’s financial statements for the last year when the company committed the fraud. For example, if your company was charged with the fraud over the years 1999-2001, you can use only the 2001 financial statements from the 10-K. Also, examine the NOTES to the financial statements that give details about your specific fraud and line item.

6) You can find the annual financial statements (10-K) at the SEC website (http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html).

7) Below would be a listing of ConAgra’s financial statements. You can search for the 10-K for your company the same way.

8) Circle the line items on the financial statements that were manipulated and highlight important sections of the notes to the financial statements. Copy and paste the financial statements and relevant footnotes to the Appendix of your project file.

9) Write a 1-page description, using your own words, of how the company actually committed the fraud (DO NOT include background or history of the company).

10) Write a 1-page description of the types of journal entries that the company might have used for the fraud. Also, provide examples of the correct journal entries that should have been used. Be creative! Think about the different real-world cases that we discuss in class (e.g. Sunbeam, Enron, Waste Management, Worldcom, Tyco, Adelphia, etc.). You can

research some of these cases to find examples of how companies can manipulate journal entries.

11) Write a 1-page description of whether this type of fraud would be easier or more difficult to commit under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Include reasoning for why you believe this is the case.

12) The final write-up should be about 3 pages long and must be double-spaced, 1” margins, Times New Roman, 12-point font. (include financial statements and relevant footnotes as Appendix). Include list of References.

Assessment Instructions
For this assessment, write an executive summary analyzing the financial and regulatory impact of organizational compliance with a specific core measure of your choice. The summary must include recommendations for improving performance on the measure.
You should be able to explain the financial implications associated with the measure, as well as its importance in terms of policy, regulation, and finance. This is another good opportunity to consult with a key stakeholder within the organization. Talking to someone who works closely with the organization's finances can help you develop deeper understanding of the financial aspects of compliance. You also need to suggest ways your organization can improve compliance and how you would implement changes and overcome obstacles.
This may seem like an enormous undertaking, but you should approach it as if you were to present this information to your supervisor or manager. Keeping in mind that people in these positions do not have time to read a 10-12-page report, you would typically give them an executive summary of your analyzes and recommendations. That means that you will need to be very clear and concise with the information you want to include in the executive summary. Say as much as possible with as few words as possible.
Directions
Select a core measure and investigate your organization's compliance rate with the measure. In your executive summary, address the following:
1. Compare the compliance rates of your organization with those of other organizations.
2. Identify the financial implications associated with the measure.
3. Explain why the measure is important in terms of policy, regulation, and finance.
4. Describe changes that could be made that would improve compliance with the measure.
5. Identify the people who would be affected by the changes.
6. Outline a plan to implement the changes within the organization.
7. Identify obstacles you would expect to encounter.
8. Explain your strategies for overcoming obstacles.
Additional Requirements
• Format: Include a title page and references page. This is an executive summary, do not use APA style and formatting. To determine the appropriate format, it may be helpful for you to review the documents used in your organization. How do they look? What kind of language is used in memos? These can help guide your development of this executive summary. Certainly, feel free to use bullet points as appropriate.
• Length: Write a 2-3-page (maximum) summary of your information, not including the title page and references page.
• References: You must still reference scholarly resources to support your work. Use at least three current scholarly or professional resources.
• Font: Use 12-point, Times New Roman font.

Assessment of the Musculoskeletal System and Pain

Fred is an 83-year-old male who is being admitted to the medical-surgical unit status post fall. He is alert and oriented and reports that while visiting a local casino with his wife Margaret earlier this evening, he tripped over a curb and fell landing on his right side. After receiving morphine in the emergency room prior to transfer to your unit, Fred is rating his pain at 6/10. He has multiple bruises from his jawbone to his knee as well as a slight rotation of his right leg.
Past medical history includes: myocardial infarction (MI) x 2, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) with bilateral iliac stents, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), sleep apnea, and degenerative joint disease.
Medications include: aspirin, Plavix, Lopressor, Lisinopril, and Metformin.
After reviewing the above scenario please answer the following questions.
1.    Based on the information provided, how will you prioritize your care, what assessments will you include and in what order? Please provide rationale for your response.
2.    Considering this patient's age, injury, past medical history, and list of current medications, what, if any, concerns do you have related to his potential need for surgery?
3.    Should surgery to repair his right femur be required; what type of clearance and pre-op orders would you anticipate receiving related to his diet, meds, lab work, and so on?

Introduction to the Musculoskeletal System
A thorough assessment of the musculoskeletal system provides vital information on the health status of the client such as exercise and metabolism. Bone density and curvatures of the musculoskeletal systems vary widely in different cultural groups. A change in bone density and injury to the skeletal system from working environments create risks for trauma and long-term disability.
Clients seeking care for musculoskeletal issues often complain of joint pain or muscular injury. We want to gain as much information as possible about the current condition or injury that has motivated them to seek care. Don't forget, when delving into the history of musculoskeletal injuries, to ask about any medications they are taking because many medications can affect the musculoskeletal system. Also inquire into their lifestyle habits. What kind of job do they have? What are their hobbies? Many of these activities have repetitive motions, which can lead to stress injuries. Previously you were taught this mnemonic device to inquire about chest pain. It is also a good tool to utilize any time you wish to obtain more information about other types of pain.

Precipitating or Palliative: What precipitates the symptom? Does stress, anger, or certain physical positions or factors trigger the symptom or make it worse? What makes the symptom lessen or subside?
Quality or Quantity: What does the symptom feel like, look like, or sound like? Are you having the symptom right now? If so, is it more or less severe than usual? To what degree does the symptom affect your normal activities?
Region or Radiation: Where in the body does the symptom occur? Does the symptom appear in other regions, and if so, where?
Severity: How severe is the symptom? How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most severe? Does the symptom seem to be diminishing, intensifying, or staying the same?
Timing or Temporal: When did the symptom begin? Was the onset sudden or gradual? How often does the symptom occur? How long does the symptom last?
The Physical Examination
The musculoskeletal examination begins when you first meet the patient. Notice how the patient walks, moves, and stands. These observations can provide cues for detecting musculoskeletal problems; they help make up your general physical assessment of the patient.
Follow this general assessment with an examination of specific muscles and joints using the techniques listed below. These techniques are performed simultaneously rather than sequentially, as is done in other physical assessments.
•    Inspection
•    Palpation
•    Range of motion (ROM)
•    Tests for muscle strength
Attention to health history taking is very important because patients will occasionally make general comments that suggest problems.
During your assessment for range of motion, be alert to age limitations because muscles tend to become weaker as clients age and adopt sedentary lifestyles. Older adults are more prone to falls due to loss of balance because of postural changes over their lifespan.

information flows within global supply chains

Critically discuss whether you agree with the following statement:
“Information flows within global supply chains (and between supply chain stakeholders) should be suppressed as much as possible so as to maximize the added value of products when they move along the supply chain process” (i.e., from raw materials to end-users)
Please critically discuss the above statement based on supply chain theories and real world examples. Also, please explain and justify why you (do not) agree with the statement. In the case that you do not agree with the statement, you should also propose how, and to what extent, information flows should be encouraged along global supply chains.
