The Clean Power Plan

The Clean Power Plan

When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was formed it was charged with setting the standards for curbing emissions of 6 criteria pollutants: carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone molecules, particulate matter and lead.  Notice what was not on the list….carbon dioxide,  the predominant greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere which makes the Earth warmer. It’s a natural process we need to keep our planet habitable.  However, you don’t want to have too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere or the earth will get too warm causing oceans to expand, glacier ice to melt and sea level to rise.  This creates a whole host of problems causing heated debates (pun intended) about global warming. Carbon Dioxide stays in the atmosphere for decades and, to put it simply, since air moves it is a global issue and a very hot worldwide topic (pun intended again).

In 2007, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the EPA must regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act if the EPA finds those emissions could “reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.” (Massachusetts et al v. EPA 549 U.S. 497 (2007).

In 2009 the EPA did so find and issued an endangerment finding. In September, 2013 the EPA announced proposed carbon pollution standards for new power plants.   In August, 2015 President Obama unveiled The Clean Power Plan which established the first national standards to limit carbon pollution from existing power plants.  Why all the attention on power plants?  According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration 37% of U.S. carbon pollution came from power plants in 2015.    Coal is the primary source used to generate electricity in the U.S. The combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal, is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

The state of Texas is responsible for the greatest amount of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustions in the United States, and we also produce the greatest amount of hazardous waste.  This makes sense given that we have more oil refineries, chemical plants and coal-fired plants than any other state.  Everything’s bigger in Texas! Texas is part of a bipartisan coalition of 24 states that is suing the EPA over the Clean Power Plan claiming they are overreaching their authority.  Despite this lawsuit, on April 22, 2016 the United States signed the Paris Climate Agreement along with 174 other countries. It is a non-binding treaty aimed at slowing the rise of greenhouse gases such as CO2.  It takes effect once 55 countries representing 55% of global emissions formally join.  Since America and China account for over 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions our participation is critical.

Questions to consider in this week's assignment:

Is Global Warming caused by human activity in your opinion?

What do you think about the lawsuit filed by Texas against the EPA trying to thwart the Clean Power Plan? (Remember that Texas is also a major producer of natural gas. Wouldn’t the Clean Power Plan benefit Texas)?

Is the Paris Climate Treaty still viable now that the United States under the Trump Administration has decided to withdraw from the treaty?

Your Assignment should be at least 1 page but no longer than 2 pages in length

Write a three to four page paper outlining three major information warfare or cyberterrorism events that occurred around the globe in recent history. To complete the assignment:

Research the following three case studies:

Russian denial-of-service attack on the country of Estonia in 2007

Cyberattacks during the 2008 South Ossetia war between Georgia and Russia

US State Department Compromised Computers in the East Asia Bureau in July 2006

For each of the three case studies above, address all of the following:

Who was the victim of the cyberterrorism or information warfare campaign?

Who was the aggressor in the cyberterrorism or information warfare campaign?

What type of cyber attack occurred? (e.g. virus, malicious code, denial-of-service, hacking, etc.)

Explain how the technique was used and what the outcome was for the victim.

What has the victim (country or person) done since the cyber attack to prevent similar attacks from occurring, in the future?

Compare and contrast the different attacks. Based on your analysis, which cyber defense mechanisms you think are critical to preventing the recurrence of these types of cyber attacks in the future.

The paper must be three pages in length and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least three scholarly resources other than the textbook to support your claims and subclaims. SPHE295 Week 2: Assignment 1 – My Diet Analysis

Assignment 1: My Diet Analysis

During week 1, you learned about several different tools for analyzing your diet. With this assignment, you will use several of those tools to discover the quality of your diet.

There are three parts to this assignment.

Record Food Intake

Record the foods and beverages you consume for three days. Don’t leave anything out (like alcohol) or change your eating habits. I am not grading the quality of your diet. There is a diet record form attached to this assignment. You can use this to record the foods and beverages you eat. I suggest you try to include two weekdays and one weekend day. This selection should give you a better representation of what you usually eat. If you are deployed and not eating your usual foods, makeup three days, but try to select foods and beverages you would typically eat and/or drink while at home. There is no right or wrong to this assignment. You will not be graded on the healthiness of your diet, so be honest and enter what you usually eat. The goal of this assignment is for you to learn about your diet.
For more complex foods, you will need to record each ingredient. For example, if the food contained green peppers, red peppers, pineapple, pork, sweet and sour sauce, you need to write each of these down and the amount (x cups pork, x Tb sugar, x Tb vinegar, x cup diced onion, etc.). Be as detailed as possible.
Analyze Food Record

When you are done recording the foods and beverages you ate, then it is time to analyze your diet. We are going to use the diet analysis program, SuperTracker. It is available free at this URL: https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/.
Here are brief instructions. A quick start guide is attached to this assignment. Here are two websites that you may find helpful:
https://supertracker.usda.gov/sitetour.aspx (This website has many short videos demonstrating the various functions of Super Tracker.)
https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/Documents/SuperTracker_FAQs.pdf (This website has answers to many frequently asked questions)
Briefly, once you are on SuperTracker’s home page, click on the words, “Log In/Create Profile.” You can create a profile that the site will remember or you can create a profile that is not saved. You should create a login ***
Register and set up a new account. Remember to write down your username ***
You will now enter the site. Click on the word “Class” and select “Add profile.” Fill in the boxes and when everything is completed, click on the box labeled “Submit.”
On the next page, click on the words “Track Food and Activity” and select “Food Tracker” from the list.
Here is where you will enter the foods and the quantity you ate and/or drank for the three days you recorded. Be sure to divide the foods and beverages into their respective days.
You can always leave the program and come back and enter more foods later. If you have a particular product you consumed, for example, sweet and sour pork at a restaurant, you will need to enter each ingredient. If you don’t find a food when you enter it in the food search box, try a different name. For example, if you have the apple slices from McDonalds, select “apple”, not “McDonalds Apple” for the food. You can also enter the raw data from the package under My Combo or make a recipe under My Recipes. As a last resort, you may have to find a substitute.
Lastly, enter the info requested under "Physical Activity." This information will be used to evaluate your activity level.
Once you have all the info entered, go to "My Reports" and click on “Overview.” You will see a list of reports. Have fun looking at each one.
Click on “Food Groups & Calorie Report.” Enter the first day of your food analysis and the last day. Click on “Create Report.” This is the first report you need to turn in. Click on “Export Report As: pdf” and save to your computer. Be sure the file title includes your name, for example, “ByerleyFoodGroupsCalorieReport.” What did you learn about your diet?
Now, click on Nutrient Reports. Enter the first day of your food analysis and the last day. Click on “Create Report.” This is the second report you need to turn in. Click on “Export Report As: pdf” and save to your computer. Be sure the file title includes your name, for example, “ByerleyNutrientReport.” What did you learn about your diet?
Now, click on Physical Activity. Enter the week of your food analysis and the last day. Click on “Create Report.” This is the third report you need to turn in. Click on “Export Report As: pdf” and save to your computer. Be sure the file title includes your name, for example, “ByerleyPhysicalActivity.” What did you learn about your activity?
There is one report option titled "Food Details." Click on these words. As before, enter the first day of your food analysis and the last day. Click on “Create Report.” This is the report you may find helps you complete subsequent assignments. Click on “Export Report As: Excel” and save to your computer.
Write Report and Submit Assignment

Now answer each question below. The total length of your report should be at least 500 words.
Where did your dietary intake fall short of the Choose My Plate food group recommendations?
What changes might you make to meet the Choose My Plate food group recommendations? Be specific. Discuss each food group that is less than 100%.
Which nutrients were less than 100% in your diet?
What role did physical activity level play in your dietary plan?
In closing, provide a personal evaluation of this website. Do you feel that it was informative and useful? If so, what did you learn?
In the assignment area, submit the following:
A Word document containing your answers to the five questions above. The responses should be typed in a Word file with your name included in the file title.
Your Food Groups & Calorie Report. Be sure to the report appropriately.
Your Nutrient Report. Be sure to the report appropriately.

ASSIGNMENT 3. HISTORY AND POLITICS OF SUSTAINABILITY

The concept of sustainability that we have discussed so far did not emerge out of thin air.  In fact, it has a long and debatable history.  This paper asks you to piece together SOME of the main ideas associated with the history of sustainability, particularly ideas associated with its political contestation.  This is a tough assignment, I know, because your paper should be about 5-6 pages long.  Further:

  • Typed
  • 2 spacing
  • TIMES NEW ROMAN
  • 1-inch margins.

It’s hard to keep things short and to the point, but this is a really important professional skill to develop.   One thing you need to do constantly in your career is to collapse lots of information down into digestible nuggets, all without being dense, and usually without a lot of time to do it!!  It is far easier to write long than short, believe me.

Your paper SHOULD BE structured as follows (though you may use your own terms)

  • Part 1. Introduction (very brief)
  • Part 2. The intellectual origins of sustainability
  • Part 3. Three historic “moments” in sustainability
  • Part 4. The rise and limitations of “green diplomacy.”
  • Part 5. Conclusions (very brief)

Each section should address the following:

  • Part 1. Introduction
    • Here you will establish your overall point. What DO YOU THINK is the main idea we should take away from your interpretation of the material I give you, including the lectures and the readings?
    • This should be brief, perhaps no more than 3/4 of a page
  • Part 2. The intellectual origins of sustainability
    • Listen to LECTURE 1
    • Read the article entitled “The intellectual origins of the sustainability concept.”
    • Answer the following question: What key ideas about the sustainability problem today have roots in the 19th century?
  • Part 3. Three historic moments in sustainability
    • Listen to LECTURE 2
    • Read the following:
      • ‘Gifford Pinchot, John Muir, and the Boundaries of Politics in American Thought’
      • ‘Introduction: New Deal Conservation’
      • ‘A brief comparison of the Civil Rights Movement and the Environmental Justice Movement’
      • Answer the following question: “Of the three historic moments in US environmentalism that we have discussed here, the most important single idea from the past that influences sustainability discussions today is…… and this is why”
    • Part 4. The rise and limitations of “green diplomacy.”
      • Listen to LECTURE 3
      • Read the chapter entitled “From protest to sustainable development”
      • Answer the following question: “Sustainability has become increasingly important in global affairs, but at a real cost.  That cost is…..”

Course Project – Factors Preventing The Adoption Of VOIP/IP Telephony

Introduction

Provide a complete description of the topic you selected, and identify the specific IP Telephony/VoIP issues. In this section, spend time defining and describing your project and present background/facts that will enable the reader to clearly understand the topic. Providing a thorough understanding and clear articulation of the project's topic is critical to the successful development of the rest of your project.

The Introduction should help the reader envision the project and how you propose to accomplish it. A draft of your introduction is due at the end of Week 3.

Suggested length: 1-2 pages (keep it concise)

Problem Statement

The project's problem statement should be the driving force behind the project. It should include the purpose or specific result expected from the project and achieved through the project objectives and activities. It should include the criteria against which everything done on the project is measured. A good problem statement is specific, measurable, and realistic.

The problem statement should not change during the course of the project. Identify and clearly state the problem(s) and issues. If there appears to be more than one problem/issue, decide if they are separate or related issues. A draft of your problem statement is due at the end of Week 4.

Suggested length: 1-2 pages (keep it concise)

Analysis

A significant section of the project is providing a detailed description of the causes of the problem/issue(s) that you have defined in the Problem Statement section. Be sure the causes you identify relate directly to the problem/issue. You must effectively apply course material. Integrate your findings from your review of the literature in your analysis. Discuss the concepts, ideas, or insights that are most valuable in helping you make sense of your project. This is not a course in applied commonsense, so support your analysis with appropriate research. This section should tie together the problem statement and project goals. Cite all sources.

This section and the implementation plan are the most important sections of your project. Start thinking this through as soon as you have defined your problem statement. It is important to spend significant time in working through this section of the plan.

Suggested length: 3-4 pages

Recommended Solution and Implementation

Explore the solution(s) that could be appropriate to solve the identified problem/issue(s). Be sure the solution(s) is/are logical based on your analysis and that the solution(s) would effectively treat the problems, not the symptoms. Also, discuss the anticipated outcomes (both positive and negative) of implementing each of the possible solution(s) you identified. Describe exactly what should be done and how it should be done, including by whom, with whom, and in what sequence.

Your implementation plan should include any recommendations you may have for the manager, a high level timeline, and identify any risks. This section should also contain a fallback plan if the proposed implementation should fail.

This section should be developed in conjunction with the analysis section. This section will describe, in words, how the manager will implement your proposed solution.

Suggested length: 2-3 pages

References

You must use no less than six (6) resources outside your textbook. Cite all sources. All references must be cited in two places: within the text and on a references list. Choose references judiciously and cite them accurately.

See the Syllabus/Plagiarism and Keller Graduate Citations for more information on APA if you have any questions about this important requirement.

Writing Quality and Flow

This is a very important area . Your instructor will carefully peruse your writing to evaluate its graduate-level content and correctness. In the business world, the ability to communicate is critical. Poorly written documents do not equate "A" level work.

Your project should be crisply written, well edited, and professional. You essentially have 10-15 pages to communicate a thoughtful approach that will result in success.

Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and clarity of expression are important; writing should be logically organized, readable, and persuasive. Use of appropriate document structure to adequately cover the content outlined above and the selected topic is demonstrated. The plan is your finished product so take care to present your ideas and solution in a most professional manner.

The fully completed VoIP/IP Telephony Project includes a title page (include your name, date, title of your plan, name of the course), the Introduction and the content outlined above, plus any applicable tables, graphs, or attachments. Footnotes (or endnotes) and a Bibliography are required.

You must use no less than six (6) resources outside your textbook. Cite all sources. All references must be cited in two places: within the text and on a references list. Choose references judiciously and cite them accurately. Refer to the style guide manual to understand how to cite sources appropriately.
