The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro by Frederick Douglass

Reread Dr. Patell's lecture notes on Frederick Douglass. Then, a short essay giving evidence from "The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Black" that James M. Smith is correct in affirming that Frederick Douglass's strong support of individualism (rather than the state, the authorities, the government) has the goal of expanding the rights of individuals rather than wanting to tear down American society. In other words, find evidence that Douglass champions expanding individualism as a way to fulfill and strengthen American society. Document information from the notes by putting (Patel) at the end of each paraphrase or summary from his notes. Or you could use an attributive tag such as, "According to Dr. Cyrus Patell,. . "At the beginning of your essay, you should identify that you are working with Douglass's "The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Black." After doing so you will identify evidence from that document by just putting his last name in parentheses at the end of paraphrased or summarized info (Douglass) . You could also use some very short quotations of phrases, not of whole sentences. I do not need to see that you can copy his words; I need to see that you can discuss your speech in your own words.
Use few quotes (2) and only from sources I provide with files I uploaded with additional material.
