PSYC Paper

The project for this course is a written paper that reviews, in depth, a topic in cognition and memory. You may choose your own topic but you are welcome to discuss your choice with me in the Q&A discussion. An example of an acceptable topic is the contribution of Dr. Brenda Milner's study of patient H.M. to an understanding of memory.
Your paper should summarize fundamental issues, questions, and controversies and provide a general overview of the topic. To accomplish this, you will have to use recent research articles (published within the past five years) to illustrate relevant points. You may use any of a number of electronic databases to find research articles that deal with your topic, including the library and the Internet. The one requirement for your selected research articles is that they must have appeared in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. (You may wish to consult the library staff or your instructor to determine whether a particular journal is peer-reviewed.) You may not use the course text or newspaper or magazine articles as your major reference, but they are sometimes useful when they lead you to an appropriate research article. Avoid simply repeating the articles in summary form; use them within the text of your paper to illustrate important points.

Your paper is to be seven to 10 pages, or about 1,800 words, in length. It must be typed, double spaced, with one-inch margins, and fully referenced in the format specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (see http://www.apastyle.org/index.aspx).

The text of your paper should be preceded by an abstract (about 100 words) that summarizes the key points in the paper (i.e., a statement of the problem, major findings, and conclusions).

The paper will be graded on content, organization, and writing mechanics and style. The following rubric will be used to assign points associated with each main topic.

Crowdfunding

Berk, DeMarzo, and Harford (2018) noted in Chapter 14 this week that The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act “exempted crowdfunding from the historical restrictions on private equity investments” (p. 439).

  1. Do a search for crowdfunding from the last two years and skim the topics that return on the search.
    1. Adjust the sliders under the peer-review check box to ensure that your results are from the last two years.
    2. Search for both “crowdfunding” and “crowd funding” to get a wider variety of topics.
  2. Select a topic from your search and at least two peer-reviewed articles on your subject.
    1. Check the Peer Reviewed box on the left side of the search results to ensure your article is peer reviewed.
  3. Next, navigate to a business news website, such as Bloomberg, CNBC, or Marketplace, among others. Locate at least one article within the past 12 months related to crowdfunding on your research topic.
  4. Write a 900-1200 word paper on your crowdfunding topic using your articles as research.
    1. Include a concise summary of each article.
    2. Explain if the writer of the business news article either supports or contradicts what the peer-reviewed articles are saying about your topic.
    3. Based on your research, how do you think crowdfunding will affect traditional capital fundraising?

The format of the report is to be as follows:

  • Typed, double spaced, Times New Roman font (size 12), one inch margins on all sides, APA format.
  • Use headers for each of the subjects being covered, followed by your response.
  • In addition to the content pages required, a title page is to be included. The title page is to contain the title of the assignment, your name, the instructor’s name, the course title, and the date.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in advanced financial management.
  • Evaluate applications of financial management for the financial manager.

presentation slides

class presentations over assigned literature– students prepare a 5 to 6 slide powerpoint presentation leading the class in a group discussion over the reading assignment which will also be posted on Moodle. Please label the file with your last name followed by (student number) and title of the article in quotation marks you are covering. The first slide should include your name, class information and the full citation of the article or chapter you are presenting. Title (in quotes), author's name, and book or volume title (italicized) should all be centered. The second slide should include a brief (one or two paragraph) overview of the article and some meaningful quotes. The remaining slides ought to explain vocabulary, illustrate important musical or dance concepts, or review and critique various cultural or ritual theories used in the scholarly analysis. Your presentation should also include important internet links, photos, audio footage, youtube, or additional media and cool video files that are related to the case studies or illustrate the cultural and art forms you are presenting. Your final slide may include some of the discussion and study questions provided in the syllabus or you may prepare new questions with class discussion open for general platica (conversation). However, you should NOT provide the answers to the questions but lead a discussion and following the conversation then provide answers to the study questions and notes.

Tips from my professor:

Your discussion is original and is based on your reading of the assignment. So make your own file and decide which songs, videos, photos you wish to include. Be sure to define important vocabulary and theory and explain what the main point of the article is.

Ozomatli has become a very well-known band but they prefer not to be called a Chicano band because they are members are multi-ethnic and although they came out of East LA, they use world music instruments and influences and their audience is indeed global. According to the Glossary of Terms for LCME Accreditation Standards and Elements

From a comment in WSJ Aug 30, 2016 (http://www.wsj.com/articles/employers-find-soft-skills-like-critical-thinking-in-short-supply-1472549400) According to the Glossary of Terms for LCME Accreditation Standards and Elements (June 2016), “critical judgement/critical thinking is the consideration, evaluation, and organization of evidence derived from appropriate sources and related rationales during the process of decision-making. The demonstration of critical thinking requires the following steps: 1) the collection of relevant evidence, 2) the evaluation of that evidence, 3) the organization of that evidence, 4) the presentation of appropriate evidence to support any conclusions, and 5) the coherent, logical, and organized presentation of any response. (Elements 7.4 and 9.4)” Using the LCME steps for demonstrating critical thinking, can lead to better results if the evidence used to evaluate is obtained from reliable sources.

Learning Outcomes:

Through completion of this assignment, students will be able to demonstrate:

Research topic: The mathematics of climate change and modeling

Research Questions:

How to model the climate and how to solve it? Many models are run using linear systems and by integrating the differential equations. This can be difficult to solve analytically however due to the number of variables. They divide the earth’s atmosphere into a finite number of boxes (grid cells). Assuming that each variable has the same value throughout the box and write a budget for each box, defining the changes within the box, and the flows between the boxes. When we identify the variables, we have to understand the equation. Models of the earth’s climate are based on laws of physics: Ideas gas law; Conservation of energy; Conservation of momentum; Conservation of mass. We want to solve for the values of the variables described by these equations over time. Essentially we have seven (or more) variables described by the same number of equations that describe change with respect to time. (T, p, ρ, u, v, w, ρ(water), ρ(ice), etc.). So we should be able to solve for the values of the variables through time.

Climate change is a case of modeling where the next state relies on the previous state, so Markov chains are one way of creating a model. These Markov chains can then be approximated using differential equations, but the same difficulty arises with solving the equations analytically.

Methodology:

First, we will be looking into how to design a climate model. There are different kinds of models such as box models are simplified versions of complex systems, reducing them to boxes linked by fluxes and zero-dimensional models, higher-dimension models etc. This research project is about a model for climate change. The Global Climate Models ( GCMs) where we divide the Earth’s atmosphere into a finite number of boxes (grid cells). Assume that each variable has the same value throughout the box. GCMs use mathematical equations to describe the behavior of factors of the Earth system that impact climate. These factors include dynamics of the atmosphere, oceans, land surface, living things, and ice, plus energy from the sun.

And then we will be looking at other researches and papers that are done for the climate modeling. We will be going over those researches and papers to get the idea of what people are looking at and how they are designing the climate model themselves as well as how mathematics involved in this process.

We will be looking at mathematical equations that are being used to develop climate models. GCMs apply the discrete equations for fluid motion and integrate these forward in time. There are equations for mass continuity, motion, thermodynamic, chemical continuity. We will be looking at these equations closely.

Expect to find:

We are trying to put together a general climate model that provides good indicators as to how our climate changes. This can help us to understand more about how global climate varies and how those changes will affect the local climate. Most GCMs can provide a reasonable representation of regional climatic features but they tend to have larger spatial scales. When we look at a very local area, the GCMs may be inappropriate.

For global climate, we expect to obtain a comprehensive model which hopefully includes not only changes in the atmosphere but also changes in hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere and even in land surface and solar inputs. For local climate, on the other hand, we still need to start with GCMs and then downscale to a certain region. The model should be able to produce at least temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction in a certain area and we will be able to compare these results with data from observations.

Composition II

READ THE ENTIRE ASSIGNMENT BEFORE BEGINNING!

Begin research for a paper about the Harlem Renaissance movement and some of its writers. One in particular must be included: Langston Hughes.

Here are the paper’s parameters:

   Τhe research paper’s question:

(1)What is a prominent theme you discovered while reading about the Harlem Renaissance and (2)how does that theme show up in some of the writings of Langston Hughes (you MUST use this writer's works) and one or two other Harlem Renaissance writers, like Zora Neale Hurston and Countee Cullen? # 2 is the dominant theme of the paper.

•  First, this means reading about the Harlem Renaissance and finding a theme, an idea that keeps popping up in your readings. That theme becomes the focus of your thesis statement.

•  Second, read several pieces of literature written by Langston Hughes and one or two other Harlem Renaissance writers and find those pieces that contain the same theme.

•  Your paper will contain a brief but descriptive history of the Harlem Renaissance period in your introduction paragraph and contain sufficient in-text citations. By the end of the introduction, you will state the theme you discovered from your readings as part of your thesis statement.

•  The body paragraphs of the paper will take the pieces of literature by Langston Hughes and one or two other Harlem Renaissance writers and show how that theme you discovered shows up in those pieces of literature. Use lots of in-text citation.

•  The conclusion paragraphs will be a summary of your points and closing comments.

•  This paper should NOT contain biographies of the writers. This paper should NOT contain literature written by people influenced by the Harlem Renaissance.

•  The length of this paper is 4-6 pages. Use only 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Double space the entire paper – NO additional spacing anywhere in this paper.

•  Any paper that does not meet the minimum length will receive a failing grade (3 7/8 pages is NOT 4 pages!). The works cited page is NOT part of the page count.

•  This paper must follow MLA guidelines. Use your textbook, pages 217-244; Purdue's Online Writing Lab (OWL) at <http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/> (you'll have to cut and paste that address or "google" OWL) .

•  I expect every paragraph to contain in-text citations, body paragraphs to contain at least two in-text citations. Do NOT use lengthy quotes, paraphrase instead but give an in-text citation to show where the ideas came from.

•  I expect every source you use (use a minimum of 8 sources for 4 page, 10 sources for 5 pages, and 12 sources for 6 pages) to be included in the works cited page (which is NOT included in your page count). Watch your email for more info on MLA and suggestions on how to write this paper. Total points possible will be 500.

 1. Write a list of sources (at least 10) you've found. Write them as annotated bibliography entries (MLA style).  Follow this link for an example: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/03/ (copy & paste). Your summary/commentary should be at least 25 words in length. (Points possible for this activity: 100)
