Why is it important for counselors and other behavioral health professionals to become familiar with the use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)? How can use of the DSM’s cross-cutting symptom measures aid counselors in clinical diagnosing?  This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standards:  2.F.7.e. Use of assessments for diagnostic and intervention planning purposes.  2.F.7.k. Use of symptom checklists, and personality and psychological testing.  5.C.1.e. Psychological tests and assessments specific to clinical mental health counseling.
