Can Henrietta Lacks Show Us The Way?

Who owns your cells? When they are in your body, it's not much of a question. Does the answer change if they have been taken for testing?

Henrietta Lacks was a 31-year-old mother of five when she died in 1951 of a particularly fast-moving form of cervical cancer. Doctors treating her at Johns Hopkins Hospital took samples of her cancer cells for study. Ms. Lack's cell line was the first human cell line to grow in a lab environment and went on to help develop the polio vaccine, chemotherapy, in vitro fertilization, and much more. Does the magnitude of these scientific achievements outweigh the fact that doctors did not obtain consent from Ms. Lacks?

To prepare for this Discussion, review the Grady article in this week's Learning Resources, -Second Opinion: A Lasting Gift to Medicine That Wasn't Really a Gift" on the case of Henrietta Lacks and the famous "HeLa" cell line.

Post a comprehensive response to the following:

• In your opinion, who owns the results of research (the cells, the cell lines)? Support your rationale using ethical principles.

• Should Henrietta Lacks' descendents receive remuneration for the products resulting from the research conducted with HeLa cells? Support your rationale with legal principles.

• If Ms. Lacks had given informed consent, would your opinion change?

There should be seven (7) main sections to the Policy Analysis Paper:

Problem definition

Methods

Issue analysis

Proposed solutions

Strategic recommendations

Weaknesses and limitations

Cost-Benefit Analysis

Note: You may add sections or subsections to your Policy Analysis Paper. You may include tables and charts in the page length.

Write a five to eight (5-8) page paper in which you:

Select one (1) real-world policy issue and provide a description of the issue.

Analyze the major costs and major benefits of the issue.

Recommend three (3) courses of action.

Provide at least three to five (3-5) reliable, relevant, peer-reviewed references (no more than one [1] used previously), published within the last five (5) years that support the paper’s claims.

Identify the impact of cultural competence and protocol on international relations.

Formulate domestic and international public policy alternatives and arguments.

Identify the significance of key actors and stakeholders impacting global public administration.

Use technology and information resources to research issues in international public administration.

Write clearly and concisely about international public administration using proper writing mechanics.

Informed Consent In Practice

Medical decision making can be an extremely challenging experience for patients and their loved ones. Balancing various potential outcomes with levels of risk can be daunting for someone who is also dealing with the emotional stresses of illness. Gaining the patient's "true" informed consent is a critical step for health care professionals to ensure that the best decisions can be made.

To prepare for this Discussion, review this week's Learning Resources, paying particular attention to the Emanuel article, "What Makes Clinical Research Ethical?"

Also, review the Macklin article from Week 1, "Applying the Four Priniciples" before preparing and posting your discussion response.

Post an explanation of how informed consent for medical research (clinical trials) differs from the patient's consent to treat used in health care practice (e.g., medical treatment or surgery). Explain why you think this difference exists? Provide at least one clear example of how informed consent could be used in medical research and one example of how it is used in health care practice. Then provide an example of each of the four ethical principals in action in research.

final Forensic Evaluation

final Forensic Evaluation

Context:

The purpose of this assignment is to complete the final draft of the forensic evaluation that you selected in week5 from the following four options:

  • Competency to confess (waive Miranda rights).
  • Sanity at the time of the offense charged (insanity).
  • Independent medical evaluation (IME) for psychological damages.
  • Juvenile court evaluation for amenability for treatment.

Instructions:

In this final draft of your forensic evaluation, you will expand upon your work in week 7—most importantly, adding a diagnosis and opinion section. The final paper should include your work from week 5 as well as the new information that follows (a forensic evaluation generally has all of these elements, although some evaluators may provide more background information on the evaluee than others—many examples of forensic evaluations are provided in Chapter 19 of your textbook):

  1. Introduction
  2. Informed Consent
  3. Background Information
    • Briefly describe the fictional evaluee's social, educational, occupational, substance use, medical, and psychiatric history.
    • Include mock collateral information that you obtained during the course of the evaluation.
  4. Mental Status Examination
    • Using a formal mini-mental-status exam , describe your mock client's performance on domains such as orientation, immediate recall, attention and calculation, recall, language, judgment, ability to abstract, and intelligence.
  5. Interview Questions
  6. Test Battery
  7. Diagnosis
    • Provide a thorough DSM-5 diagnosis for your mock evaluee.
  8. Opinion
    • Provide a defensible forensic opinion that relates to the legal question asked.
    • Justify your opinion.

Use the Sample Forensic Evaluation (linked in Resources) to assist in your preparation of the assignment. Note that your forensic evaluation does not require this level of detail in the background history.

Additional Requirements:

In addition to the preceding objectives, your assignment should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communications are free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Formatting: current APA style and format.
  • Length of paper: 10–12 pages.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point

Diversity among individuals

Diversity among individuals, as well as cultures, provides a challenge for nurses when it comes to delivering meaningful health promotion and illness prevention-based education. How do teaching principles, varied learning styles (for both nurses and patients), and teaching methodologies impact the approach to education? How do health care providers overcome differing points of view regarding health promotion and disease prevention? Provide an example.
