LASA 1: The Application Paper

Families have changed greatly over the past 60 years, and they continue to become more diverse. Why is the family considered the most important agent of socialization? What caused the dramatic changes to the American family? What are those changes? Describe the differences in marriage and family life that are linked to class, race, gender, and personal choice. Do you feel the trend towards diverse families is positive or negative? If the trend changed towards traditional (pre-World War II) families, how would that affect women’s rights?

Discussion 2

Discussion 2

For years, many working individuals in the United States have counted on Social Security as their primary retirement income. With the deductions from every paycheck to fund this future benefit, Americans looked forward to a comfortable retirement based on the assumption that these funds were being invested wisely. Is this a factual assumption, or is it another myth of the U.S. social welfare system?  Relying on Social Security as a sole means of support in retirement is uncommon. As society’s work habits and life expectancies change, Social Security has come to mean different things to different people. For those who are unable to save and/or invest on their own, it functions like a forced retirement program that provides a financial safety net for the future. For those who become unable to work, social security often is viewed by others as a public assistance program. For others who are financially secure and prepared for retirement, it is an entitlement program where individuals draw Social Security at retirement in an effort to recoup what they paid into the program by deductions from their wages. How might these perceptions of Social Security relate to the perceptions of public assistance programs that were discussed in last week’s resources?  For this Discussion, review this week’s resources. Then, consider how Social Security is different from public assistance programs. Finally, think about how these differences are important in terms of the general perception of Social Security benefits.  By Day 3  Post an explanation of how Social Security is different from public assistance programs. Then, explain how these differences are important, in terms of the general perception of Social Security benefits.   Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Selecting a study case (MNC) for the assignment task At the start of the module you should chose a multinational company as your study case for the assignment Your company must have existed for at least 20 years and must have been an MNC (i.e. must have been internationalised – hint: if you don’t know what that means look it up when you do your reading for this module) for at least 15 years. Assessment The assessment is an essay which accounts for 100% of the mark awarded for the module. Total word count: 3,000 words (+/- 10%), not including references and appendices (but note standard instructions regarding grading of appendices). The essay question Describe two examples where the process of globalisation has affected your chosen company. One of these examples must relate to events prior to 2008 and one must relate to events since (or during) 2008. For each example, using a PEST (or PESTLE analysis) explain which elements of the globalisation process are associated with the example. Describe how and why they are significant and demonstrate how these influenced the company’s response and actions at the time. Then, with reference to comparisons between both examples, analyze how the nature of the global business environment has changed in the period since the earliest example. (Note: there are three parts to this question – each of your two examples plus the final analysis of how the global business environment has changed. Each part counts equally to your final grade) Seminars The seminars are intended to help you develop your essay. Preparation for first seminar: Identify one example prior to 2008 where globalisation has affected your chosen company Prepare a brief (no more than one-side of A4, 11 font) PEST(LE) analysis for this example. Use the PEST(LE) dimensions to focus your attention on: both the variety of different global influences on the example; and interactions between these influences Remember: the focus should be on how the Global Environment has led to the example and influenced the company’s response. Be ready to talk the rest of your group members through your analysis. You will only have about 5 minutes each to talk through your PEST(LE) so you need to come well prepared and clear of what the key points are. You will also be working in a room with other groups so note that you will be discussing your analysis around the table; it will not be a formal presentation. You will need to bring enough copies of the PEST(LE) analysis to give one to each group member plus one to the tutor. Preparation for second seminar: Identify both examples that you intend to use in your essay. Remember: one of these examples must relate to events prior to 2008 and one must relate to events since (or during) 2008. You do NOT need to prepare a PEST(LE) analysis for them. Instead, prepare a briefing note to share with your group members. Your briefing note should: Describe briefly each example Outline the significance of each of the examples (i.e. the most significant aspect(s) of globalisation that the example illustrates) Explain how the comparison from theearliest to the most recent example will illustrate specific changes in the Global Environment across the period spanned by the examples. Be ready to talk the rest of your group members through this briefing note and comparison Bring enough copies of the briefing note to give one to each group member plus one to the tutor. Discussing your ideas in the seminars with the rest of your group will give you valuable feedback to help you improve your understanding of globalisation and of the assignment task. The better you prepare for and the more actively you engage in the seminars, the better your assignment essay is likely to be. Note however that the submitted final assignment is an individual task, not a group task. The assignment asks you to write specifically, not generically, about how your understanding of globalisation relates to your selected examples from your chosen company. Make sure you understand the rules on plagiarism because collaboration between group members in the writing of the assessed individual assignments would be a form of plagiarism.

Born Global Companies- Marketing Assignment

Born global firms contribute significantly to international market growth from a very early stage. Born global firm is defined as ‘‘business organizations that from inception, seek to derive significant competitive advantages from the use of resources and the sale of outputs in multiple countries’’ (Weerawardena et al., 2007, p. 294). From an international marketing perspective and using an example of your choosing, critically discuss the marketing capabilities/strategies/approaches that lead to early internationalisation of your chosen international born global company (example).

This might include but not limited to:

– Your chosen company’s internal and external factors that help your chosen company to be born global.

– Your chosen company’s unique marketing resource/advantage in the international marketplace.

– Your chosen company’s marketing strategy.

– Your chosen company’s marketing activities (e.g. elements of marketing mix, branding, etc.)

– Your chosen company’s competitiveness.

Week 5 Discussions

Discussion1

In many societies certain groups possess more resources and hold more power than other groups. In some of these societies, racial discrimination and racial tension also exist. While members of the societies may openly acknowledge that unequal distribution of power and racism are present in their society, many fail to examine the complex relationships between privilege and racism. Social workers must understand this complex relationship so they can educate and empower their clients. Empowerment is the cornerstone of social work practice.  In the book Black Empowerment, the author,Barbara Solomon, writes, "Empowerment refers to a process whereby persons who belong to a stigmatized social category throughout their lives can be assisted to develop and increase skills in the exercise of interpersonal influence and the performance of valued social roles" (p. 6).  Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.  Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.   To prepare: Review the case study "Working With Individuals: The Case of Mary."
