POLI SCI 1, THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES

POLI SCI 1, THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES

Write a 3-5 page essay (double-spaced, 12 point font) on Theme 3, “Political Linkage in America”. Please see me if you have trouble accessing a computer to type your essay. The prompt for the essay is as follows:

Choose ONE political linkage topics (Political Parties, Elections and Voting, Interest Groups, Social Movements, The News, Public Opinion) from theme 3 in the syllabus. In your essay, you must address both of the following two parts.

Part 1Identify a personal (real world) experience that you have with your chosen political linkage topic, and analyze how your personal (real world) experience compares to what you have read in the assigned readings for that topic. For example, let’s say you choose Elections and Voting as your political linkage topic from theme 3. You will then describe in detail your own personal, real-world experience with voting in an election. You will then compare that personal experience to what the assigned readings on Elections and Voting say about this topic. Is your personal real-world experience the same or different from what is presented in the assigned readings? Explain. That is just one example.

Part 2Discuss in detail how you would use your overall knowledge about your chosen political linkage topic gained from this class to respond to a specific political issue/event in the news right now. For example, let’s say you choose Elections and Voting as your political linkage topic from theme 3. Identify a specific political issue/problem that is currently highlighted in the news right now, and use everything that you have learned about Elections and Voting in this class to create detailed strategies for taking action to respond to (or even solve) that political issue/problem.

You are required to include specific ideas from the assigned readings relating to your chosen political linkage topic. When doing so, you must include citations to the assigned readings. (Having no citations to the assigned readings for your topic will result in point deductions.) Regarding citations, wherever you write about something from the textbooks, you must immediately add a parenthetic citation at the end of the sentence. The parenthetic citation should be in the following format:

(last name of author(s) and year of book, page numbers)

Example: An idea from page 159 in the 2015 edition of the Ginsberg textbook:

Economic growth and climate change are two important issues in many countries around the world (Ginsberg et al. 2015, 159).

If citing from any of the online links, for the purposes of this class, simply place the title of the link within parentheses, for example (Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail).

Your 15 points will be based on how well you really, really explain your thoughts and examples, how well you integrate specific ideas from the assigned readings (with appropriate citations), and how well you write your essay to have no spelling/grammatical errors and/or readability issues. The more that you explain your

arguments and can support them with specific ideas and examples from both your personal experience AND the assigned readings from this class, the better you will do on this essay.

Healthcare

Healthcare

Complete a research essay on the government and healthcare. Remember this is being written for the president to read.

The U.S. healthcare system has been a controversial topic for decades. Here are the aspects and questions to address for this essay:

  1. Identify a current issue being debated about the American healthcare system.
  2. Explain two competing solutions to this problem.
  3. Evaluate which one is preferable.
  4. Address the responsibilities of each level of government, which are federal, state, and local. (Most of the essay will be about the federal government).
  5. Address the responsibilities of each of the three branches of the federal government.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 500 word minimum and 600 word maximum length, not including references listed at the end or footnotes if used.
  • Incorporation of concepts and terms from the required readings.
  • Inclusion of facts from a recent news article about the topic/solution.
  • Correct spelling, grammar, and formatting, whether it's APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian.

Writing tips:

1) Write concisely! More is not necessarily better if the required points from the rubric are missed. A 500-word essay can earn an "A," while a 700 word essay may lose points for going too long.

While watching TV, you stop on a talk show in which the host says the following:“We the Peoplehave nothing to fear from our federal government. The federal government is limited to only its enumerated powers, and it can’t go beyond those powers. We have civil liberties that the government perfectly respects without exception. The federal government has always protected our civil rights. Finally, every one of us always goes out to vote to exert our control over the federal government.”Is this talk show host right?Using your knowledge of political science, write an essay to counter the talk show host’s statements. In your essay, you must explain… a)Oneexample in the U.S. Constitution that allows the federal government to expand its power beyond the enumerated powersb)Oneexample of a civil liberty that has an exception/loopholec)Oneexample in history when the government (federal and/or state) violated our civil rightsd)Oneexample about the voter turnout problem in the U.S.The most important thing is to really, really explain your thinking. The more evidence from class (like specific class concepts, examples, discussions, videos, etc.) that you can include to support your argument, the better you will do on the essay. Hard Choices In Public Policy HW

Hard Choices In Public Policy HW

Length: 1000 words (± 10%). Your bibliography is not part of your final word count.

Minimum Sources: 6 (readings do not count as sources)

    Content

Pick a policy issue and explain why that is a public policy problem. Explain the possible opposition to your problem definition. Explain why we should spend taxpayer money and dedicate time and energy to solve this public policy problem.

    Dos

    • Define your problem narrowly. Do not pick an issue that is overly broad such as “health care is a problem in the US”. Narrow the problem to a manageable subset such as “access to affordable health care for young (18-24) people is a problem.”
    • Use precise language. Avoid ambiguous terms. Be straightforward in your statements.
    • Use evidence to back your claims. Do not take it for granted that everyone would agree about your take on the issue. Evidence should include academic research and data.
    • Present your data effectively. Use charts, graphs, tables to present the evidence you have collected. Always report the source of your data.
    • Structure your document. Make sure that it follows a logical progression. A quick two-line description of its contents can be very useful.
    • Address the best possible opposition to your problem definition.

    Don’ts

    • Do not bake the solution into your problem definition. Example: if you say that “we do not spend enough money for k-12 education”, then the obvious solution is “increase spending”.
    • Do not obfuscate the issue. Example: if you define a problem in terms of fairness, you must explain what you mean by ‘fairness’. Your definition of hard-to-measure concepts could be very different from your audience’s.
    • Do not make evidence-free assertions.
    • Do not use unreliable sources: trace the evidence back to the primary source.

    Arizona Politics Class

    Arizona Politics Class

For this week's Discussion Board please read the Intro and Chapter 1 (geography) in the "An Introduction to Arizona History and Government" by Donald Gawronski. After you have done so, please write about what you've learned and what you find interesting. If you come from out of state feel free to compare the differences in geography between Arizona and your place of origin. The purpose of this assignment is to make you familiar with the state of Arizona.

Responses should be no less than two paragraphs. A good paragraph is comprised of 5-8 sentences. If you are waiting for your book to arrive please cite at lease one example either from the Wall Street Journal, class lectures, or any other credible resource to support your answer.

    Final Project

    Final Project

Compile your milestone assignments and feedback from your peers and instructor. Be sure to make revisions to your milestone assignments based on feedback received. Submit your final project, which is a program review report that comprehensively examines a program that is operationalized from a policy. The report will examine the political framework of the policy that precipitated the program, the program's stakeholders, and the program's outcomes and outputs (both intentional and unintentional). The report will conclude by recommending process improvements and should be comprehensive enough that it could be a deliverable to a public agency.

      International Relations Assignment 1

      International Relations Assignment 1

Before you begin this assignment, please review the course materials from the first three weeks of class with a special focus on the three mainstream theoretical perspectives: realism, liberalism and constructivism. Please pay particular attention to the definition of each and avoid pairing them with domestic perceptions of conservatives, liberals, etc. I also recommend reviewing the week 2 forum's Wrap up.  While you may select an outside source to present a world event, it is important to study and incorporate the week 2 readings to explain IR theories. Outside sources on IR theories can be quite confusing for students new to International Relations.

For this assignment you will choose a world event. You can choose one of the ones listed below or come up with your own. I suggest that you message me if you choose your own event.   Explain which states are involved, if there are any non-state actors, (for non-state actors' definitions, see Week One Lessons), international governmental organizations  or non governmental organizations involved in the conflict. Also identify a few of the key individuals involved.  Then lastly, and here's the tricky part, decide which theory would best explain the event and explain your choice. Be sure to define the theory.  Lastly, remember that IR theories are not characteristics or states or processes. Think of they as guidelines that help leaders make foreign policy decisions. For example:  Instead of claiming that the North Korea was realist, think about its leader as a realist.

Your response should be 3 – 5 paragraphs. Remember that one paragraph is about a 1/2 of a page long.  Use 12 pitch, Times New Roman font. The paper should not be more than 3 double-spaced pages, including References.

      Russia's invasion of the Ukraine

      Terrorist attacks in France

      Russian hacking of US computers

      The Korean War

      The Cold War

Please be sure to cite source in the text with Turabian in-text citations, and write a Reference List at the end of your work. By this time, you should be familiar with the basics of the Turabian Reference and Citation Style. I do not expect perfection; but I would like to see your effort. The Quick Guide is located in Forums, under Questions about the Course.

Please include your last name in the filename and upload your work as a .doc or .docx file. Your submission is due on Sunday of week 3.
