Leadership Reflection

Leadership Reflection

This paper provides you with the opportunity to critically reflect on your role (present or anticipated) as a HR practitioner/leader (remember, in this course, we are defining HR broadly, to include HRM, HRD, OD and Career Development roles). The text readings and your personal work experiences serve as the foundation for your reflection. The kinds of questions to consider are: Where do you see yourself in the future? I see myself managing the HR department. What are your interests? My interests are reading, writing, and learning about new cultures and traditions, spending time with family and friends. Where do you think your competencies lie? My competent in interpersonal skills, decision-making, strategic planning. Do you see yourself as a specialist or a generalist? I see myself specializing in training and development. What types of experience might you pursue to gain additional information on yourself or your interests? Social networking, reading new books on HR management and taking personality tests to figure out my strengths and weaknesses. What assumptions frame your practice and what does it mean to you to be a HR practitioner? as an HR practioner one needs to be a strategic planner, think like the leaders to earn a seat at the table, bring value to the company by focusing on the real business, not HR business. Although this is a reflection and not a research paper, your reflections should be grounded in the course materials. Therefore, you must base your reflections on course information, and cite those sources that have informed your reflection.
Use 2 scholarly articles and cite Discover your true north by Bill George, HR from the Outside in by Ulrich. These two books are the text reading in class. Thank you and feel free to ask me any questions regarding this assignment. I appreciate your hard work. I'll also attach my mission statement.

ANT208H5S FINAL STUDY QUESTIONS

ANT208H5S  FINAL STUDY QUESTIONS

These are SHORT ANSWER questions, which means about a paragraph or half a page, at most. Each questions is different, and some answers require more detail than others. Thus, read each question carefully so you understand the components of the question, and make sure to answer fully (all parts). Be concise but clear.

To help you study for the exam, it is a good idea to answer these questions completely in full, as you would on the final exam. However, it is suggested that you then come up key points or words to help you remember each answer, rather than try to memorize an answer in its entirely.  Good luck!

1.     What is popular culture? Define the concept in detail, and list two examples of popular culture.

2.     What is cultural anthropology and two of its guiding principles? Based on the reading and lecture (week 2), also provide two detailed examples of how cultural anthropologists are represented in horror films.

3.     Define semiotics and hermeneutics. Using one example from the Cormack article, explain how Tim Horton’s coffee (through its commercials) is a symbol of Canadian identity.

4.     Define discourse and colonial discourse. Provide one example of a colonial discourse and briefly describe what that discourse consists of.

5.     According to the readings and lecture (week 4), what is the national discourse produced at the Vancouver Olympics and why is this problematic? Please describe and explain your answer clearly and succinctly.

6.     Drawing from the “What is a Nation? The Appropriation of First Nations as Canadian” readings and/or lecture, provide an example of how either First Nations and other marginal members of society contested power (representations and discourses) at the Vancouver Olympics. Explain your example in some detail.

7.     Some scholars argue that the spread of Hollywood films globally is a form of cultural imperialism. What does cultural imperialism mean? Define and explain the concept in detail.

12.  The lifestyle reality television show What Not to Wear (WNTW) is a space where identity is produced and remade. The authors argued that this is achieved through governmentality. Define governmentatity and explain how it works in the show WNTW to remake identity.

13.  In his article about blackness in science fiction films, Russell (week 7) argues that blackness appears as avatarism. Define avatarism and provide two examples of avatarism in film. Describe your examples.

An Issue of Ethics

An Issue of Ethics

Pretend your company is considering selling customer data gained through their Facebook page to a 3rd party as a way to increase revenue. However, the company has a written commitment to privacy on its Facebook page that reads:

"We will not sell your personal information to anyone, for any purpose. Period."

Consider Hooker's ethical tests (or another reputable ethical framework that you uncover in your research) as you create a well-organized paper that addresses the situation above. In your paper, answer the following questions:

  • What other information or reference points would help you to make an appropriate appraisal of the ethical nature of the situation?
  • Would the company be in ethical violation of the policy if the data was aggregated, stripped of personal data, and then legally sold?
  • What if the company did not actually sell the data but instead shared (allowed use of) it in exchange for a service such as mining of that data?
  • What if one of the company's other social media sites omitted a mention of data sharing in its privacy policy and there is a single login for all company sites and the data among them was shared with corporate headquarters? Could that information ethically be sold?
  • If leadership decided to change their policy, what data would it be ethically responsible in sharing?
