McDonaldization of Society.

Do research on the Internet about (or ideally, READ) the book “McDonaldization of Society”written by George Ritzer, first edition in 1993.  Look for a youtube video of a lecture or interview with George Ritzer.  

PAPER:  Write a 2-3 page paper answering the following questions:

1. In 2-3 paragraphs, summarize the main points in “McDonaldization of Society.”

2. What is McDonaldization?  What are some examples of McDonaldization given in the book?

3. What are some of the advantages of McDonaldization? Discuss efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control.

4. What is rationality and how does it relate to Ritzer’s argument?

5. Do you think the advantages of McDonaldization outweigh the disadvantages? Explain.

6. Summarize a youtube video you watched of George Ritzer.

7. List five (5) ways in your daily life that you could resist McDonaldization.

 

 

Research Paper & Presentation

Research Paper & Presentation:  you are to submit a 500 word reflection paper on the film The Company Men, as an example of ethics and corporate culture. This reflection paper is due by June 20, 2019

 

 

Option Assignments: students can also complete a 500 word paper on the below topics. This paper will also be presented and discussed in a class discussion. Note: please make your assignment option early in the semester so the instructor can assign a date and time for presentation/discussion

 

1. MOTIVATION: Create your own motivation theory. Why do you think people do what they do? What do they really want? Why do they work? How can you get them to work? You may draw on the work of theorists or people you interview as long as you cite them. This should be at least 500 words and, if possible, include a graphic model showing how your theory works.

 

2. LEADERSHIP: Each student will read a book on Leadership and submit a book review. In 500 words give a synopsis of the book (What were the author’s main points?) and a critical review (How was it? What did you learn? Would you recommend it?). In order to prevent duplication, the chosen book must be approved beforehand. If you change your mind, you must have the new book approved. NOTE: Books by John C. Maxwell and Fight Club and Lord of the Flies are not approved.

3. CHANGE: Managing change is the most difficult challenge in management, especially changes in culture. Why? How would you lead change? What steps would you take to implement change? How long should the process take? Read an article, a book, the chapter of a book, or describe a situation with which you are familiar. All authors must be cited. (MLA/APA) 500  words on your own conclusions.

Discussion Board

 Accountability and ethical conduct are important concepts in public administration. In Tennessee, recent political stakeholders and some bureaucratic stakeholders have been caught up in various scandals (Operation Tennessee Waltz, Operation Rocky Top etc.). Based on the readings, what could Tennessee do to make political and bureaucratic functionaries more accountable?

Discuss what a marketing plan is and describe the different components of the marketing plan in your own words.

Please take the marketing elements/components, such as the SWOT, goals/objectives, etc. and translate/apply them into how they would be carried out into the execution of a marketing strategy.

In a SWOT analysis you determined that one of the strengths of a company was that weekly team meetings were held where ideas are exchanged and commendations are awarded to team members who have met or exceeded goals or expectations for the week.  How can we translate or incorporate that Strength into a marketing strategy?

 

Since the ideas being exchanged in the weekly meeting are to foster growth and innovation, camaraderie, excitement, and motivation, they can also be used to generate new ideas for promotion.  This weekly team meeting can be leveraged to spur perhaps a name of a new product that company X has been trying to launch for considerable amount of time but just haven’t thought of the right one.

 

 A real world example, Lays Potato Chips reached out to the general public using their social media strength to ask them to come up with a new flavor of potato chip. This combined the strengths the company had with the need to execute a new marketing strategy. Through this process, a consumer won $1mm for coming up with a new potato chip flavor, and Lay’s of course won tons of new customers and multiple millions in sales of new product.

Psychology

As an employee of the “meat” company Spam, it is your job to determine which style of Spam people like best: traditional style, spicy style, or chunky style. You are also responsible for determining whether or not people prefer the newly developed “fresh” Spam that needs to be refrigerated (it also comes in traditional, spicy, and chunky varieties), or the regular Spam in a can (i.e., that does not need to be refrigerated). You ask 100 participants to taste all 6 different kinds of Spam and rate how much they like each variety using a Likert scale ranging from 1 (do not like at all) to 10 (like a lot).
