2. Summative Assessment for Using Information in Human Resources (5UIN/02)
________________________________________
Learning outcomes:
1. Understand the research process and different research approaches.
2. Be able to conduct a critical review of information sources in an area of HR/business practice and analyse the findings.
3. Be able to draw meaningful conclusions and evaluate options for change.
4. Know how to deliver clear, business-focused reports on an HR issue.
Assessment brief/activity
Your CEO has asked each departmental head to undertake a critical review of their systems, processes and practices as part of a major organisational change agenda. You have been asked to review an area of HR/business practice and present a business report to key stakeholders with recommendations for improving practice. To provide the basis for your report, you have been asked to conduct a critical review of information sources relevant to the area of practice. You should:
• Select an area of HR/business practice and give the reason for your choice
• Undertake a critical review of different information sources (at least three) e.g. research digests, academic and professional literature, online databases, key texts relevant to the selected area of practice.
• In your write up of the literature review you should explain why you selected that particular source and highlight some of the different research approaches adopted by the authors and comment on the advantages and disadvantages of these different approaches.
• Draw meaningful conclusions from the review of the different information sources.
• Make justified recommendations to named stakeholders for sustaining and/or improving practice.
Your report structure should include:
• Title page (report title and their name, submission date)
• Executive summary (overview, methods of analysis, findings, recommendations)
• Table of contents (list of numbered sections)
• Introduction (terms of reference)
• Main body (headings and sub-headings – these could be for each information source reviewed). Candidates should use a mix of narrative and diagrammatic formats to present their findings.
• Conclusion (including major inferences and recommendations for change)
• Reference list
• Appendix if used i.e. information supporting their analysis but not essential to its explanation.
Evidence to be produced/required
A written business report for stakeholders of approximately 2600 words. The title page, executive summary, reference list and any appendices are excluded from the word count.
You should relate academic concepts, theories and professional practice to the way organisations operate, in a critical and informed way, and with reference to key texts, articles and other publications and by using organisational examples for illustration.
All reference sources should be acknowledged correctly and a bibliography provided where appropriate (these should be excluded from the word count).
All submissions should be in the region of 2,600 words plus or minus 10% and references should be added in the Harvard Referencing Format. There is a Harvard Referencing tutorial in the Resources Area which outlines the formatting required.

What are some examples of circumstances where a probation officer might decide to approve a parolee for early release from his or her parole period?

Many factors are considered when termination of parole is determined. When an offender is discharged from prison and reenters the community, he or she remains on federal parole for a specified period of time. During the reentry process, many types of supports are incorporated into the reentry plan along with risk assessments, to measure the level and predictors of the offender reoffending again. The most important step after reentry occurs is determining an appropriate time to release the offender completely from judicial supervision.

Review the policy regarding the termination of federal parole by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Create a 2-slide presentation that responds to the following:

  • Provide an introduction to the issue, including an explanation of the role of mentorship (1 slide)
  • What are some examples of circumstances where a probation officer might decide to approve a parolee for early release from his or her parole period? (1 slide)

How is groupthink and stereotyping illustrated in these videos?

Imagine being part of a group with three other coworkers trying to make a decision about whether to discontinue funding an underperforming product. The group has been working together on the product line for three years , but the product is clearly a failure. When you start to question where the decision is headed you are called disloyal and told to go with the team and give the product more time . One of the team members calls for a final vote on the group’s decision, which appears to be to continue funding a clearly awful and doomed-to-fail product. Watch the “Now What?” video and discuss the following questions:

  • Is this decision a programmed or non-programmed decision and what is the basis for your answer?
  • How is groupthink and stereotyping illustrated in these videos?
  • Would a rational decision-making approach work? Why or why not
  • As a manager, how else might you handle this situation? Please provide 1-2 examples to support your viewpoints

Should be 75-150 words in length

What is the influence of diversity on your chosen field of study or future profession?

When we approach discussions about diversity, we each come to conclusions with our own perspectives that have been shaped by our experiences. As we begin our first discussion, take a moment to consider what has influenced your ideas of diversity and compare those ideas with what you read in this module’s readings. Then, address the following:

  • Introduce your major and profession – NURSING.
  • In your own words, define the term diversity and discuss how it is used or impacts your daily life. How does your definition compare and contrast with those that were presented in the readings?
  • What is the influence of diversity on your chosen field of study or future profession? How can you use your understanding of diversity in your professional career?

In response to your peers, provide feedback about their definition of diversity. Compare and contrast your answers and consider the following:

  • What are the similarities and differences between your peer’s response and yours?
  • How do the two definitions of diversity help to illustrate how diversity and society are intertwined? How can a perspective through the four lenses help to provide a greater understanding of diversity?

Make sure you support your response with the readings from this module, and any additional resources if needed.
