Watch the 17-minute TED Talk

Assignment:

1) Watch the 17-minute TED Talk called On Being Wrong by Kathryn Schultz (Links to an external site.). Then submit the following:

a) Three quotes from Kathryn, along with a short explanation of why this quote stuck out for you. For example:

“It does feel like something to be wrong; it feels like being right.”

“This quote really struck me because…” then yada, yada, yada.

b) A brief story of a time when you thought you were right about something, only to find out that you were wrong. How did you respond? Were you defensive, embarrassed, or angry? Did you try to rationalize your way out of it? For example:

Back in my corporate days one on my job responsibilities was to make the company a fun place to work. February 25 was Chocolate Covered Nut Day, so I had the idea to pass out some gourmet chocolate-covered nut clusters to the employees. As I did, I thought it would be a good idea to connect it to the company’s values in some way. Two of these values were to “’wow!’ our customers” and “have fun.” With this in mind, the vendor and I designed a little note with a playful nut character saying:

“Happy National Chocolate Covered Nut Day! Now go nuts to ‘wow!’ our customer and have fun doing it!”

Seemed basic and simple enough to me. But the next day at least one employee (but perhaps more) told HR that they were offended by the note. To them, the note was essentially saying “Fine. Here’s some stupid chocolate. Now get back to work!”

At first I was incensed. I thought is was a sad example of how the trolling Internet culture that has trained us all to catch each other in our words and shame us for the smallest things done for the best intentions was bleeding into real life. However, as I calmed down and looked at the larger context I saw the point. I realized that to folks working their butts off day in and day out, a few chocolate-covered nut as recognition for their dedication was almost a mockery, and that the words I had chose may have worked in a face-to-face meeting in which I could read the crowd, but not in a little note left with some $5 nuts.

The Open Web Application Security Project came into existence December 1st 2001, and is still used for the development of Web applications. Go to the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Website, located at https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Main_Page, and find their “Top 10.” Review the OWASP top 10 Web Application Security Risks for 2017. What are the most significant changes since 2013? Choose one of the items and look at it closely. For example, number 10 is “Insufficient Logging and Monitoring”; what is recommended to prevent this risk? What does that mean to you based on your experience in this class so far? Knowing the importance of identifying threats, how should developers be responsible for log files and monitoring. Justify your answers. Share your findings with your classmates and provide links to any useful resources you find. After reading a few classmate postings, reply to the ones where you learned something new, or have something to add. Get in early to post your initial feedback and keep the discussion going.

Incident Response Paper

Cyber security tools are available to organizations requiring integration of its problem management, configuration management, and incident management processes.

The CEO and CIO have asked you to create an IRP and change management plan. These plans will help the organization choose the appropriate cyber security strategy and tools.

Part I: Incident Response Plan

Incident response is a disciplined methodology for managing the aftermath of a security breach, cyberattack, or some other security incident. An IRP provides an organization procedures that effectively limit the impact on the data, system, and business and reduces recovery time and overall cost.

Create a 1- to 2-page IRP using Microsoft Word for the organization you chose in Week 1. In your plan, ensure you:

  • Discuss roles and responsibilities.
  • Discuss the critical activities for each of the 5 phases in the incident response process.
  • List at least 3 cyber security tools that work together to monitor the organization’s network for malicious and abnormal activity.
Part II: Change Management Plan

Change management plans define the process for identifying, approving, implementing, and evaluating necessary changes due to new requirements, risks, patches, maintenance, and errors in the organization’s networked environment.

Create a 1- to 2-page Change Management Plan in Microsoft Word for your chosen organization. In your plan, ensure you discuss:

  • Roles and responsibilities
  • The use of swim lanes and callouts
  • Who should be involved in developing, testing, and planning
  • Who reviews and signs off on the change management requests

Briefly describe how a change management plan reduces the organization’s risk from known threats.

Part III: Cyber Security Tool Comparison

Create a 1- to 2-page table that compares two of the industry standard tools that integrate incident management and change management.

Recommend the best tool for the organization to the CEO and CIO based on the needs of the organization and what sector it is in. Explain how it maintains compliance with the organization’s regulatory requirements.

Format your all references and citations according to APA guidelines. Given that this is an academic assignment, additional research outside of the class materials to support the assertions in the document is expected.

Submit your assignment in a single Microsoft Word document.

Technology

Modern day society is riddled with economic, political, environmental, and social complexities that have sparked a global conversation on the future of energy. Economically, fluctuations in fuel prices, along with the costs associated with regulatory requirements, have caused energy prices to be increasingly volatile. Politically, rhetoric from both conservatives and liberals has split the nation down the middle, while putting pressure on international relationships. Environmentally, energy stakeholders debate the extent to which each should be held accountable for environmental stewardship. Socially, climate change proponents and global warming naysayers have driven the scientific community to the brink. Your group project, spanning Modules 2–8, addresses these complexities affecting the future of energy. Scenario. Leaders across the world have come to the realization that sound solutions are needed in order to address society’s energy concerns. As such, the United Nations (UN) has asked your group to develop a strategic plan to address the needs, wants, and concerns of society (for a country of your choice) as it relates to energy utilization. To do so, your group realizes that it must relinquish all pre-conceptions and take an unbiased look at the existing body of literature on energy. You have approximately seven weeks to research and develop this plan. At the end of the seven weeks, your group is to submit a professional presentation to UN officials for review. Professional presentation specifications. The presentation must be a least 4 slides in length, narrated, submitted as a PowerPoint Show (.ppsx or .pps), and contain the following sections: Energy Supply slide and References slide (does not count towards the slide count)

RESPOND ON THE TEXT BELOW

Environmental sciences have documented large and worrisome changes in earth systems, from climate change and loss of biodiversity, changes in hydrological and nutrient cycles and reduction of natural resources (WWW#1). The global environmental changes occurring have potentially large negative consequences for the well-being of future generations, and raise questions about whether global civilization is on a supportable path or if it’s consuming too much. The increasing economic activity and the following increasing impacts on a limited Earth arises from both major demographic changes. Which do include the population growth, shifts in age structure, urbanization, and spatial redistributions through migration (WWW#2). The economic and social impacts of invasive species include both direct effects of a species on property values, agricultural productivity, public utility operations, native fisheries, tourism, and outdoor recreation, as well as costs associated with invasive species control efforts (WWW#3). According to USDA, “A 2005 study estimated that the economic damages associated with invasive species in the United States reached approximately $120 billion/year” (WWW#3). Human activity has such an impact on the planet that it has gone from being local to affecting the global cycles of the elements, water, the climate and biodiversity. For example, so far this year alone, two million hectares of forest have been lost worldwide. Desertification has advanced by almost five million hectares; and global carbon dioxide emissions have topped 13 billion tonnes. (WWW#3). Therefore, there needs to be a need for decisive action to stop this alarming situation. Stopping the “sixth great extinction” requires well grounded knowledge of current biodiversity, its function, and the causes and consequences of its loss. Secondly, this knowledge needs to be used as a launch pad from which will make society aware of the problem and drive the political measures necessary internationally to adapt to and diminish biodiversity loss.

CLIMATE CHANGE 2

  • Your contribution(s) must add significant information to the discussion.   Your reply should be a very minimum of 250 words.
  • Research, read, and then write in your own words. Explain examples and incorporate evidence. Cite your sources within your sentences.
  • Provide complete citations at the end of your posts. A complete citation includes both the website’s title and
  • Do not copy and paste stuff….that will cause you to lose points and far more importantly, you will have lost the richness of understanding this information.

Many people are skeptical that climate change is even occurring on our beautiful planet. Some places worldwide feel its effects through increased temperatures, which is desirable to some. However, many other places, like the lovely island Fiji, are suffering from the effects of climate change. A Youtube video, “Climate Change Fiji,” posted by the user UN Climate Change describes the terrible circumstances faced by civilians who are forced to flee their homes due to rising sea levels (www#1). The loss of beach shores has resulted in a drastic decrease in marine life and land species who rely on coastal areas to survive. According to an article posted by author Sarah Taylor, to the site EuroNews, titled “Fiji prepares for ‘Climate Refugees’,” since the 19th century, sea levels have risen by around 25 centimeters worldwide (www#2). This rise in sea levels is attributed to the seemingly neverending rise of greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere. Another Youtube video, “Climate Change and Fiji,” posted by the user COP23fj emphasizes that Fiji is only one of many other Pacific Islands to be battling climate change (www#3). However, Fijians have taken the lead as the spokespeople for all Pacific Islanders to feel protected and not neglected.

These negative biological implications seem to occur in other places around the world, right? Wrong. Our very own city, San Diego, has been facing and will continue to tackle the negative effects of climate change. A typed interview conducted by the Environmental Health Coalition with Kayla Race exemplifies the many ways climate change appears in our communities, including prolonged heat waves, more intense wildfires, increased water costs, and disruptions on electricity (www#4). My family and I have personally been affected by the increased water (and energy) costs and the interruptions on our electricity. We don’t use our AC system and rely on fans for a cool down from our heatwave, yet are charged more than during the year and face blackouts quite often. A video posted in 2017 by the San Diego Union-Tribune, explains the differences between catastrophic and existential climate change (www#5). Catastrophic damage is survivable by humans, while existential climate change threatens the immediate safety of humans. Many still do not believe that these repercussions are created by car emissions into the air, affecting our atmosphere. These effects appear not only in San Diego and Fiji, but all over the world. The loss of sea ice, increased sea levels, and intensified heatwaves not only affect coastal places, like the ones I mentioned (www#6). Sadly, these factors will eventually be seen and experienced by people all over the world. My fear is that by then, we might be too late.

TEEN PREGNANCY AND STDs

COMMENT AND ADD INFORMATION TO THE TEXT BELOW WITH MINIMUM OF 500 WORDS

250 WORDS FOR THIS TOPIC

1)The topic that I chose to research is Teens and STD’s.  As I read Chapter 14 power point about sexually transmitted disease/infection, I was concerned that the number of people who are getting STD’s are increasing especially in teens.  Adolescent is a stage of human development in which adolescents or teens explore sexual feelings.  I think teens may or may not take risks of sexually transmitted diseases seriously and on how it can affect their life permanently.

The first thing I learned that surprisingly shocked me is that two million people in 2016 have been reported to have sexually transmitted disease and that this number has been the highest rate ever reported.  Also, half of these people are reportedly young people.  On the article “Study: Many teens and young women think STD’s can’t happen to them” , teens are knowledgeable about STD yet  fails to get tested.  Despite the educational efforts to provide teens with information about risks of STD, many teens continue to engage in risky behavior and do not take this matter seriously.  If this continues, number of this case will increase rapidly.

The Second thing that I learned is that doctors may be part of the problem of increasing rate of STD. It is sad to know that some teens tend to not say anything to the doctor due to discomfort of discussing STD. Patients should be comfortable talking to the doctor about their health issues. In my opinion, it is not only the doctor’s responsibility to educate teens but everyone such as school teachers, nurses, people who surround teens and most importantly, the parents.  In the ted talk by Taylor Mali, I am amazed by how he cares for his students. I think that in order for teens to be comfortable speaking about private issues is that educators must show a concern about the teen’s issues.

I think the most important point I want all my classmate to know is that educating teens about STD would not be enough but the implementation of the knowledge about STD. Teens must have an access to the types of testing STD without judgment. Also, teens must be thought that testing STD is okay or testing STD is very important. I believe that parents play a huge role in teaching teens about sex education or these types of diseases and infection.

AND ANOTHER 250 WORDS REGARDING THIS TOPIC

2)I found teen pregnancy as an interesting topic so that’s why I chose this topic. In the past, teen pregnancy had a high rate and now its lower than before then it was now. “In 2017, a total of 194,377 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 18.8 per 1,000 women in this age group”(1). It was decreased by 7 % compared to the previous year. More and more adolescents are learning and taking actions in preventing teen  pregnancy and understanding the consequences that follow if they don’t take precautions. “Adolescent mothers are more likely to experience medical complications during the months of pregnancy and their labor is likely to be prolonged. The babies are at greater risk of being premature and of low birth weight” (2). Young adolescent mothers would have complications due to their bodies not fully developing fully and have to have a strict diet to consume to right about providing nutrients for the pregnancy and their growing bodies during puberty. And even older adolescent mothers may have health complications, usually adolescents aren’t eating the correct amount of nutrients and if mothers aren’t eating right, then it could harm the child even stress can cause harm.

A fact that I found interesting is that “Nearly half of pregnant teenagers will have an abortion. Most others will become single mothers”(2).I didn’t know that half of teen pregnancy lead to abortion, I would have thought it was less then that. And according to the Child Trend: Teen Abortion, “In 2013, 24 percent of teen pregnancies ended in abortion”(3). This surprised me even more that it decreased drastically, a little more than half of the previous percentage, compared to the first percentage of abortion. Another fact that surprised me was that “children born to teenage mothers have significantly lower cognitive test scores at age two, compared to children born of intended pregnancy”(4).Adolescents should know the effects of teenage pregnancy could have on not only the mother but the child as well.

Teen pregnancy life is a difficult life to follow through regarding health, education, social impressions, and future complications.“Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age, whereas approximately 90% of women who do not give birth during adolescence graduate from high school”(1). Adolescent pregnancy affects the mother’s education not to mention that she not only has to deal with her pregnancy but what others think and say about her negatively, thus the reason for them to decide to drop out of school. “Teen fathers are also less likely to finish high school, and the jobs they hold will most likely be lower paying than those of men who wait to have children”(4). It not only affects young mothers but the fathers as well. Some would leave because they know that it has complications and some stay because they think in their minds that it’s the right thing. And when they do stay, they will most likely to drop out of school as well to be able to support the child if the mother decide to not to do the abortion procedure.
