Data Vizualization Techniques

Your readings in this unit, along with the two sources that you locate on decision making using visualizations in complex systems ( you may use our library or external sources to locate scholarly articles), provide a broad range of focus on how data visualization may contribute to support the analysis of policy options in an organization. Consider the themes that arose from your readings and research and how they might be applied to an organization.

Address the following:
•             What modeling techniques will be optimal in the organization?
•             Reflect on the characteristics of the data?
•             Assess the application of visualization techniques within your chosen organization.

Your submission should be approximately 500 words and demonstrate proper APA formatting and style. You do not need to include a cover page or abstract, but be sure to include your name, assignment title, and page number in the running header of each page.

Astronmy Paper

This is the first assignment for the Course Project.

Read the description below. Via e-mail or phone, decide which group member will investigate which topic (each cohort member will pick a different topic).  The final decision on topics must be made no later than Thursday of this week.

Once it is clear what topic you will specialize in, use the links as well as the textbook to become an expert on that topic.

Astronomy 101 Course Project:  Astrobiology and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life The course project in Astronomy 101 will require you to familiarize yourself with several endeavors in the field of Astrobiology and conduct an analysis of why they are important and what type and quality of evidence they are likely to produce. You will conduct this project with your cohort members.  Each member should choose one of the following topics:

  • Extremophiles on Earth and the nature of life in the universe — Some life on Earth are adapted for what we call “extreme” conditions, super-hot, cold, no sunlight, etc.  These extreme conditions might be the norm throughout the universe.  Examining this organisms and their environments on Earth may give us insights into the most likely types of life elsewhere
  • Potentially habitable locations within our solar system — while much of the solar system would be uninhabitable to any life, some places exist beyond Earth which may be fairly cozy for some organisms.  Moons such as Jupiter’s Europa and Saturn’s Titan are examples. IN 5 MEMBER COHORTS, THIS TOPIC CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO. One topic should be the search for life on MARS, the other, all other locations within our solar system.
  • Life-supporting planets beyond our solar system — We have determined the existence of extrasolar planets only within the past decade or so.  So how do we find out if there are other Earth’s out here?  NASA’s Terrestrial Planet Finder project is one possibility.
  • Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) — While single-celled life might be quite common in the universe, the conditions necessary for the evolution of multi-celled complex life might make plants and animals relatively rare.  So what are the odds that self-aware intelligent beings are out there, and are they anywhere nearby?  The overwhelming desire to contact another intelligent species pits itself against the extraordinary low likelihood that contact will be possible.

Once each group member has selected a topic, he or she should refer to their textbook and the following websites to develop a thorough understanding of astrobiology and some introductory insights on their specific topic.   Other web resources should also be investigated in order to garner an expertise for their specific topic.

As will be indicated through the ASSIGNMENTS section of Blackboard, the final project is actually several assignments leading up to the final product.  They are as follows:  (these steps will appear as specific assignments in Blackboard)            1.  Read this page and follow the directions.  This assignment is what instructed you to come here.            2.  Go to the Course Project Forum (not a group forum) and prepare an entry which summarizes what you learned.  Also, and very importantly,  describe the basic concepts surrounding your topic AND your preliminary analysis of how this science is useful in the field of Astrobiology as well as its potential effectiveness.  Specifically identify strengths and weaknesses.  This entry should demonstrate your deep understanding and should be of significant content.  TITLE THE ENTRY WITH THE TOPIC.  This is important because others need to locate your entry according to the topic.            3.  Read the entries from other cohorts that have the same topic as you do (there should be five or six).  Compare and contrast with what you wrote.  Respond to each one, commenting on similarities and differences.            4.  Revise your submission with what you learned from the others entries, and submit the revision to your COHORT discussion forum.            5.  Read the submissions from your cohort members and their respective topics (which will be different from yours).  Begin to formulate a sense of the scope of astrobiology, and how the various areas of study are related in the grand scheme of searching for life elsewhere.  Begin a discussion with your cohorts on this topic.            6.  Individually, write a one-page analysis of the state of research in Astrobiology, including your own research topic as well as the topics of your other cohort members.  Publish this analysis to the main discussion board under the last course project link. Computer Science

Problem Statement:

Dream World International has recently done a SharePoint 2013 deployment to integrate and enhance its information technology base.

As a SharePoint developer, you have been assigned the following task:

The Sales department needs a master calendar control in its top level site which will consolidate all the individual events from all calendar apps used by any user in the sales department in any site under the sales department site collection. This Master Calendar should provide a way for sales managers to see an aggregation of all events within their department.

Inventory Models

We know that EOQ and JIT are both important methods in Inventory Theory. Please read this example on EOQ vs. JIT (https://michelbaudin.com/2015/02/23/eoq-versus-jit-explained-through-coffee-beans-and-raspberries/) and comments on the pros and cons of either approach. Then give one example in real world application for either approach.

John Pfeffer

There are pros to the Economic Order Quantity approach because you are able to buy items in bulk and save money on shipping costs. This is nice because the items you are going to be using can be bought in bulk at a cheaper price. The con to this method is that you will have money tied into the products before you use them. You also have to be able to support the space required for all of these items. If you buy too much it may take up too much space in your household.

The pros to the Just-In-Time approach include the fact that you get the item you want in the quantity that you want it right then and there. You also do not have to worry about the space in which you need to store the items. The cons of this is that you have a shelf life before the product goes bad. You will have to buy the quantity that you will be able to use in a short period of time.

A real world example of the EOQ approach is buying items in bulk. When an organization has an item that has a long shelf life such as jeans or shirts they can order items in bulk because they will still be able to keep those items for sale in 6 months to a year. A real world example of JIT approach is ordering fruit and vegetables for a store like Publix or Kroger. They will need to sell the item in a certain amount of time or it will spoil and they will lose their money.

EOQ Versus JIT Explained Through Coffee Beans and Raspberries

Christine Williams

This weeks’ topic on both Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) and Just In Time (JIT) are important methods in inventory management. Our studies note Economic Order Quantity is “The order quantity that minimizes the annual holding cost plus the annual ordering cost” (Anderson, et al., 2019). It is also a model that applies “when the demand for an item shows a constant, or nearly constant, rate and when the entire quantity ordered arrives in inventory at one point in time (Anderson, et al., 2019). Just In Time is “a philosophy of continuous and forced problem solving that drives out waste (Quizlet, 2019). The pros of Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) is the more products that you order the cheaper it becomes for the higher quantities. A pro to Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) is if you have to order more than the usual amount of inventory you may run into a problem with housing and storage of these inventory items. The pro to Just In Time (JIT) is you always have the most accurate number of products available and at your disposal when you calculate your inventory holdings. A con of Just In Time (JIT) is you will never have a surplus of these products and if there is a shift in demand you may miss out on potential sales and various other opportunities. An example of Just In Time (JIT) is a newspaper that is either sold during that day or immediately not sold within a given period of time. A newspaper is inventory that cannot be carried in stock for longer than one day at a time, after that the information becomes obsolete and unusable. Therefore, a daily paper cannot be sold the next day which makes it a daily single period inventory item with Just In Time (JIT) inventory availability (Anderson, et al., 2019).

Change isn’t easy. If it were, we wouldn’t need an entire course devoted to helping us change successfully. There is a laundry list of reasons that our change efforts may not be successful. The article we focus on this week helps us explore one key reason some people may dig in their heels and refuse to embrace change

Initial Post Instructions

Here are three statements for your consideration.

Men are more likely to resist change than women.

Women communicate better than men.

Older workers are more likely to resist change than younger workers.

Respond to the statements above, sharing your agreement or disagreement and why. Your reasoning must go beyond personal opinion and experience. Use and cite a minimum of three scholarly references beyond the texts used in the course to defend your reasoning, minimum 300 words.

Follow Up Posts

After your initial post, read over the items posted by your peers and your instructor. Select at least two different posts and address the following items in your responses:

i. What additional lessons can you learn about change from the supporting evidence that came from the scholarly articles cited by your peers?

ii. Did you notice any logical fallacies in the arguments presented by your peers? If so, comment on those and invite further conversation to see if you can arrive at a mutual understanding.

Women communicate better than men and if the only example I have is how my wife and I communicate with each other and to others, I would say this is a fair statement.  according to Dr.  Martinez, Women are more emotional ( not in a bad way) and evocative and men are more analytical and pragmatic. It does not mean that these characteristics are mutually exclusive.   When I first started working, I always wanted to have women as my boss versus men, when I go to the bank I would rather have a woman teller than a man. I always felt at ease when I call a care center and the voice on the other line was a woman.  The trend was whenever I need something explained to me I feel better if a woman is doing it.  I grew up with five women in a household of six and from my early, I saw how effective women can communicate.  Some men are very effective communicator but I believe that women are better communicators than men overall.  Another thing to consider when considering who communicate better is the environment of the communicator.  A woman can be ineffective communicator if she was told early in life that she is not allowed to speak.  Communication styles can be determined by elements of well-being, quality of life and health (Sánchez et al 2017). I am not surprised when a man is a good and effective communicator and a woman is a terrible one.  I just know overall hand down women are more effective at communicating than we are.

In this week discussion question, I examined if older workers are more likely to resist change than younger workers.  From my readings I believe that older workers resist change not because they are older and cannot adapt to changes it is because of the lack of training and time.

As technology becomes more prominent in the work force, some older people may not have the knowledge a younger worker does, so there will be a need for more training and retraining activities to stay competitive.  There will times when organizations place older workers in positions that will not require a lot of new learning but placing them in positions like these will clearly stop them from learning new tasks.  When change occurs, it may take older adults a little longer to learn new skills, but with practice and the support of leadership new skills can be learned.  Staying competitive in any line of work means staying up to date with change and workers of any age see the chance to improve and learn new skills through training activities are those who see the benefit of being a participant.

Older workers with more job experience should be motivated by their managers to continue learning and developing to avoid undesirability. Managers regardless of age when change happens should take care of their employees and their job experience in order to adapt to changes sooner.
