Crime Prevention

The purpose of the Final Paper is to demonstrate your understanding  of crime prevention programs and the role crime prevention plays in the  overall criminal justice system. You may select a crime prevention  program that addresses issues in law enforcement, the courts, or  corrections; or it may be a comprehensive program that addresses all  three. The program may address the adult justice system, juvenile  justice system, or both.

For the purposes of this assignment, assume you are preparing a  proposal to a city, county, or state governmental body to recommend the  implementation of a crime prevention program within their jurisdiction.  With support from academic literature (both scholarly and credible  sources), demonstrate the value of the crime prevention program and its  effectiveness in reducing crime, which in turn will reduce the overall  costs to the jurisdiction and justify the additional expenditures to the  community.

In your proposal,

  • Summarize the jurisdiction (i.e., city, county, or state) and the  portion of the criminal justice system your proposal is designed to  address.
  • Analyze the data from three similar jurisdictions (comparable cities in population size).
  • Evaluate the appropriate crime prevention strategy for the jurisdiction based on this analysis.
  • Examine academic literature and studies on the various crime prevention programs to address the needs of the community.
    • Describe how the crime prevention program addresses social justice issues of the community.
  • Analyze the various programs showing their effectiveness in comparable jurisdictions.
  • Propose a funding strategy for program implementation.
  • State anticipated outcomes, both short and long term.
  • Assess how the crime prevention program affects social justice within the community.

6-1 Discussion: Change of Venue

Previous Next

A motion to change venue is one of many motions that may be filed before trial in a criminal case. A change of venue motion seeks to have the trial held in a different location. The motion may be filed by either the prosecuting attorney or the defense attorney.

Using the Nexis Uni resource database through the Shapiro Library portal, locate a criminal court case involving a motion for a change of venue in your home state or another state of your choosing.

In your initial post, state who brought the motion for change of venue. Explain in detail the reasons why he or she wanted the venue changed and state whether or not the judge granted the change of venue.

In response to your peers, state whether you agree or disagree with the judges’ rulings regarding change of venue in the cases that the students have described. Defend your position.

The Justice Studies Guide from the module resources will help you get started with research by providing links to library resources specific to justice studies, including criminal justice.

What technology would be useful in locating the car?

Burleigh drives his Jaguar to work every morning and parks in the same location. One morning, as Burleigh is exiting his vehicle, two young men pull him from his car, point a gun at his head, and tell him to lie on the ground. Then they drive away in the car. After they drive away, Burleigh calls the police. Burleigh cannot identify the two men. Pretend that you are the investigating officer who responds to the 911 call. Address the following questions:

  • What crime has been committed?
  • What technology would be useful in locating the car?
  • Now pretend that you have located the car, which is parked in the driveway of a private residence. Can you seize the car without a warrant? Why or why not?
  • What are some obstacles law-enforcement officers face in solving crimes such as the above scenario?
