Explain in some detail one of the two puzzles of establishments discussed by Korman. 

These puzzles turn on materialist assumptions about some familiar things. What is it to be material? One of the features of material things is that they exist in space. Just as there are puzzles about existing in space, there are puzzles about existing in time. Make clear the two standard accounts of how things persist, that is, exist in time. What is it to endure? What is it to perdure? Give an account of the puzzle of change. What are the intuitions that give rise to this puzzle? Discuss why the two standard responses to it are supposed to be problematic. (Tie your discussion here into your answer to the previous question about the relevant intuitions.) 

Many philosophers have noticed that the so-called puzzle of change rests on a controversial view of the world in time. Explain this view, making clear the similarity between time and space according to it. Hinchliff claims that the puzzle of change can be solved by accepting a different view of the world in time. Make clear this alternative view. 

What are some of the obvious problems with it? Tallant, discussed in the Baron paper, argues that presentism and endurantism are incompatible. State his argument. How does this argument pertain to the puzzle of change? Is Tallant’s argument compelling? 

Articulate the reasons for your answer.

To begin this assignment, think about some historical examples of social change, such as agricultural advancements (irrigation, the cotton gin), shifts to democratic governments, and civil rights movements. Then, begin thinking about social changes you have experienced more recently in your own life.
 

Write a paper that discusses the following 4 prompts. Use the information under each prompt to guide your responses: 

1. Discuss a social change that you have experienced. Describe how this change impacted society as a whole and your own individual behaviors. 

· Was the social change positive or negative in your perspective? 

· Did your life get easier or harder-simplified or more complicated? 

· Has it been positive or negative for society? 

2. Research a non-Western culture, and identify a recent social movement or social change they have experienced. 

· Describe the social change/movement, and how the social change impacted their society.

· Discuss how globalization may or may not have impacted their social change. For example, consider how other societies may have influenced the social movement/change you identified OR how the social movement/change you identified impacted other societies, outside of its own.

· Was the change well received or protested by the majority of social members in that society? Include examples and references to support your analysis.

3. Research and discuss one technological advancement that is being developed right now. Then, discuss the following:

· How one of the new technologies may spur social change in your society. 

· How this new technology might impact cultural norms, values and practices.  For example, how this new technology may change the culture of a society.

· Do you believe the potential social change would be positive or negative, overall?  

4. Think critically and discuss how technological advancement can both positively and negatively impact the social sciences, specifically sociology, and how the social sciences are studied (refer to Chapter 10: Research Applications for guidance). Specifically, discuss the following:

· How studying society has evolved in response to social changes. Specifically, consider how the social change pertaining to a higher regard for human rights and ethics has made studying people easier and/or more difficult.

· How studying society may continue to evolve in the future in response to social changes. Specifically, consider how ‘privacy’ as a social value is changing and how this may make studying people easier and/or more difficult. 

· Other considerations may include a prediction on how changes in population size, globalization, shifting cultural values, new technological advancements, etc. will continue to make studying people easier and more difficult in the future

Blake Glover’s recent job performance needs to be addressed. You hired Blake over a year ago because he was highly qualified for the job, and in his first year, you and other managers were impressed by his excellent work and potential for leadership in the company. However, over the last three months, Blake has been regularly late to work, has called-in sick more than five times, and when he is at work, he has spent most of his time away from his desk, chatting with other employees and otherwise off-task. Upper management agrees that his personality fits well in the company, and you want to keep him; however, his recent behavior cannot be ignored.

As the manager of Blake’s department, you have the task of disciplining him with a formal, written warning, which must include an assessment of Blake’s performance to date and a specific improvement plan. Part I

For Paper #4/5 you will write a researched argument essay that addresses an issue related to the U.S. Judicial and/or prison system. Think about the documentary films we’ve watched (Into the Abyss, 13th, etc.), about any direct or indirect experiences you may have had, any discussions you may have engaged in (in personal as well as academic settings), any material you may have read (in and out of school) – including the readings I assigned. Decide on a topic that interests you, and devise a corresponding issue. The issue should be sufficiently complex – something debatable.

Your paper shall be 10 pages, typed, double-spaced. It shall include proper source citations (in-text citations, work cited page).

Follow these steps as you construct your paper:

1. Read what experts have already said about the issue.

2.  Examine the various dimensions of the issue by analyzing and evaluating the experts’ arguments to determine which are the most convincing, which are reasonable but not terribly convincing, and which are flawed.

3. Articulate a thesis expressing your own position.

4. Discover solid reasons to support your thesis.

5. Return to the sources (research) to extract evidence you will use to back up each of your reasons.

Visual Essay – Select 5 images that represent your perception of the U. S. Judicial and/or prison system. Assemble these into a 1-page collage. Accompany your collage of images with a 1-2 paragraph discussion of the ‘story’ your visual text/visual compilation tells.

Part I is worth 25% of your overall grade.

Part II is worth 20% of you overall grade.
