There  are many viable approaches to searching for and locating project  funding, but the most effective are those that utilize appropriate  technologies. With the specifics of your project in mind, look for RFPs  using the state, federal, and foundation grants databases/search engines  listed in this week’s Learning Resources. This is an important step, so  take your time in identifying grant providers that issue grant awards  that align to your organization’s specific cause or need. Bookmark these  websites and keep notes in the Process Development Template. Each  website offers a wealth of varied information for grant seekers that can  greatly enhance your developing understanding of grantsmanship.

When reviewing RFPs, look specifically for the following information:

  • Who is eligible to apply?
  • How many awards/grants are being given?
  • What is the dollar amount of the grant/award?
  • What are the collaboration/partnership requirements?
  • What is the length of the grant period?
  • For private funders, who is on their board and does the applicant have any existing relationships with anyone?

Keep in mind:

  • RFPs that refer to online applications may tend to be less complicated.
  • RFPs for multi-year projects will be more complicated than those for a 1-year period.

Note: For purposes of this course, please adhere to the following parameters:
• You may use RFPs from federal agencies.
• You may use RFPs for a research project.
• Do not worry about submission dates that appear on the RFP.
 

As you examine various sites, document where you  searched and the keywords you used. Process and Regulations of Fast Track

 New pharmacological agents go a long way in clinical trials and approvals from the Food and Drug Administration before entering a wide market and becoming available to needy patients in the United States. At the same time, for promising drugs that can significantly improve the results of existing therapy or fill a missing niche, this process can be accelerated using the Fast Track protocol (Woo & Robinson, 2015). The latter provides for the filing of a special application by a pharmacological company at the FDA office, which the latter examine within 60 days. If the medicine acquires Fast Track status, manufacturers receive a number of concessions, such as the right to more frequent correspondence and meetings with representatives of this state regulatory body and the possibility of cooperation in conducting a clinical trial. If convincing positive results are obtained, it is possible to obtain FDA approval after a single phase 2 clinical trial (Papadimitriou & Butler, 2017). In addition, the verification process of such a pharmacological agent is significantly reduced from 10 to 6 months.

    In order to be able to obtain faster approval via the Fast Track protocol, the drug agent must meet a number of requirements. Specific medical conditions are not indicated, but it is prescribed that the effect of the drug should be aimed at treating a life-threatening or dangerous disease, such as heart failure (Papadimitriou & Butler, 2017). A prerequisite is either to improve the outcome of existing treatment, such as a reduction in mortality or disability, or a significant reduction in the toxicity of therapy (Woo & Robinson, 2015). In addition, medical conditions that do not have developed a pharmacological treatment, such as some rare and orphan diseases, are also eligible for faster approval from the FDA via the Fast Track protocol. Therefore, due to this possibility, patients will more quickly gain access to the most modern therapy and increase the chances of a more favorable outcome of treatment.

The FDA made it possible for critically needed medications to be introduced to the US market promptly using the “Fast Track” procedure.  “Fast Track” is a process designed to facilitate the development and expedite the review of drugs to treat serious conditions and fill an unmet medical need (Vaggelas & Seimetz, 2019).  With fast track, FDA is required by the statute to decide within 60 days of receipt of the request whether the conditions for fast track designation have been met (Vaggelas & Seimetz, 2019).  To be eligible for the fast track program, an applicant must submit a request with supporting documentation for fast track designation for the product and its proposed use (Darrow, Avorn, & Kesselheim, 2018).

 

The medical conditions that warrant “Fast Track” drugs are serious or life-threatening conditions and those conditions that result in unmet medical needs (Darrow et al., 2018).  Determining whether a condition is serious is a matter of judgment, but generally is based on whether the drug will have an impact on such factors as survival, day-to-day functioning, or the likelihood that the condition, if left untreated, will progress from a less severe condition to a more serious one.  Stroke, epilepsy, brain disorders, depression, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, heart failure, diabetes, and cancer are examples of serious conditions.  Filling an unmet medical need is defined as providing a therapy where none exists or providing a therapy which may be potentially better than available therapy (Darrow et al., 2018).

It is essential to obtain a strong knowledge base on the relevant assessment tools used specifically with children. Assessment tools historically have been created and tested primarily on adults, more specifically Caucasian adult male subjects. Children, similar to people with disabilities or those from various ethnic backgrounds, are often ignored in research protocols. In turn, the assessment tools used with them tend to be mere replicas of those created and tested for adults. It has become clear in the social work profession as well as other disciplines that we have not paid close enough attention to the unique needs and experiences of children. It is imperative to recognize the importance of using evidence-based assessment tools that are tailored specifically for children. Children quickly develop emotionally, physically, and psychologically, and the assessment tools used with this population must be sensitive to their developmental process. Further, a child’s physical, emotional, personality, and psychological development is strongly impacted by his or her environment. Taking an ecological perspective, understanding a child’s experience within his or her home and surrounding environment, will help to identify the level of support and safety. This knowledge will help guide one’s treatment plan and intervention.

Discussion: Assessment Tools

Assessments are an integral part of the planned change process. During this part of the process you will accumulate, organize, and review the information you will need to begin the planning and intervention phases of treatment. Content and information are obtained from multiple sources (the child, family members, school personnel, etc.) and in various forms (interviews, records, and observation). It is essential to collect data in a comprehensive manner—understanding the presenting problem from an ecological model that seeks to gain insight into the concern on a micro, mezzo, and macro level. Focusing on a multilevel approach to a client’s concern and taking into account the environmental factors that contribute to the presenting problem distinguishes social work from other disciplines.

By Day 3

Post a description of the importance of using multiple evidence-based tools (including quantitative, open ended, and ecologically focused) to assess children. Explain how each complements the other in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the young client’s concerns and situation. Then, describe the use of an eco-map in assessment and explain the different systems you will account for in your assessment of a child.

Assignment: Cultural Competence

As with all areas of the social work process, cultural competence is essential when engaging and assessing a child’s concerns. Being culturally competent includes understanding the unique needs of your client and asking how those needs can be fulfilled. Using an empowerment perspective treating clients as experts on their lives and their needs is essential. Not only does this establish your commitment to being culturally sensitive and aware, but it will enhance the therapeutic relationship. While it is essential to learn and master social work skills and techniques to be a successful practitioner, another significant indicator of a successful intervention is the relationship a social worker builds with his or her client. Some research suggests that the quality of the therapeutic relationship will account for 30% of the clinical outcome of the treatment (Miller, Duncan, and Hubble, 2005, as stated in Walsh, 2010, p. 7). Exhibiting a dedication to learning about a client’s culture, history, and current environmental factors exemplifies a social worker’s desire to build that client–worker bond.

Introduction To Assessment Project

 

Constructing a useful psychological test is a meticulous process. First, you must to formulate a clear, empirically-based definition of what is to be measured and carefully consider the items and response formats that would best measure this construct. The test items are created based on a theory or by sampling a domain of knowledge. Subject-matter experts are often called upon to generate and evaluate the initial test items. The test is then given to a large sample of people and, after careful analysis, the statistical properties of each item are scrutinized and decisions are made about item retention, elimination, and revision.

As part of this class, you complete many of the steps necessary to construct a test. Test construction can be broken into two main phases. In phase one, you create test items. In phase two, you gather and analyze data from those items in order to choose the best items (i.e., those that best measure the construct you have identified and defined). Ideally, your assignment would be to create items, gather data, and then analyze the data that you gathered. Unfortunately, test construction generally requires data from hundreds of participants, which is impractical to do over the course of one quarter. Therefore, your assignment will be broken down into two parts:

  1. First, you design a test. You decide on a construct, write your test specifications, create test items, and have your classmates review your items.
  2. Then, instead of gathering data on your own test, you are provided with a set of test data to analyze.

This week, consider what you would like your proposed test to measure. You should select a construct that is applicable to organizations (e.g., intelligence, personality, integrity). You describe this construct and submit it to your Instructor for approval this week.

The Assignment (1 paragraph)

By Day 7 of this week, submit a brief description of the construct of interest for your Final Project to your Instructor for approval, including cited evidence from the empirical literature that helped you create an operational definition of this construct.
