Identifying your research problem is the first step in the process. Post three different problems that could form the basis of an applied research study (not a traditional research study) in criminal justice.

Traditional research is designed to expand knowledge, while applied research is intended to document a problem for the purpose of identifying solutions. Applied research is conducted in a real-world criminal justice setting (e.g., a local law enforcement agency, court, prison, community center, jail, or probation office, etc.) as a result of a problem that is currently occurring in the site and which needs research and resolution.

Select a technology that helps to maintain safety in prisons.

Select a technology that helps to maintain safety in prisons. Given that contraband is still found in prison facilities today, how would you recommend improving the technology that you have selected? Discuss this improvement and how it would help to stop illegal items from entering the prison while maintaining the safety of the officers and the incarcerated.

ANSWER THE ABOVE DISCUSSION THEN REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 125 WORDS or MORE)

                                                          CLASSMATE’S POST

As a novice drone pilot, Delivery Drones fascinate me, and I did not immediately realize that they are being used to smuggle illegal substances into prisons. In June 2019, a prisoner in the Cuyahoga County Jail Complex in Euclid, Ohio, is seen on surveillance footage looking up into the sky and attempting to strategically position himself in a recreation area when suddenly a black package falls from the sky. Afterwards, the inmate covers up the package with an orange towel and retrieves that package. It was later discovered that the package contained drugs and a cell phone (2019).

It is all too common for a drone to lose its signal with the control pad and venture off on its own until the signal has been reestablished. The loss of signal can be caused by a myriad of things such as Wi-Fi routers, cell phone towers, microwave antennas, and high voltage lines. These components cause the drone to become inoperable and the user loses all control of the drone and could possibly lose the craft altogether causing it to crash.

Pilots use remote controls to connect with their drones and direct their flightpath, however the radio signals between the remote control and drone can be interrupted. A blanket term for this deliberate radio signal interruption is called jamming, but there are other ways to interfere with a pilot and their drone, including spoofing (Friedberg, 2018).

To alleviate this issue in the prison system, high frequency signal barriers can be created and installed to cover the complete square footage of the prison and the surrounding acreage. This barrier will make it virtually impossible for a drone to be controlled inside the barrier, thus making it difficult, if not obsolete, for anyone from outside the facility to control a drone in the area. Depending on the level of protection, the drone detection software can alert the control center and ‘spoof’ the drone or take over the complete control of the drone and pilot it to a secured area.

If leadership is not a job, but a calling, what responsibilities do leaders have towards their position, their organization, and their followers?

The concept of leadership as a “vocation” greatly distinguishes leadership from a job, career, or what one simply does for a living. A vocation can be thought of as one’s calling. Vocation is often associated with the clergy or missionaries who feel called by a higher power to fulfill a specific purpose. Vocation is also a concept associated with careers like teachers, emergency responders, doctors, or other health care professionals who feel strongly compelled to dedicate their own lives to improving the lives of those whom they serve. Consider your own view of leadership. How does understanding leadership as a vocation inform your understanding of the personal and moral commitments required of leaders? If leadership is not a job, but a calling, what responsibilities do leaders have towards their position, their organization, and their followers?

Is there a mnemonic device that might help you memorize this information or what helps you understand this?

Main Post

  1. You will pick one of the topics from the text below. Do not post on duplicate topics. Scan and select a topic not already posted.
  2. Create your assignment. Save it in word on your computer/USB /Email it to yourself, etc.
  3. IMPORTANT NOTE: References are expected to create a substantial main post. The goal is NOT to retype the text but to break down the concepts and clarify where 80% of the post should be in your own words. Cite the source when you summarize or paraphrase or have direct quotes. See Start Here tab for APA help.
  4. How to Post:
  •  Click on the Create Thread Button at the top of the page to post your main response to the weekly discussion.
  • Type the NUMBER AND NAME of your topic as the subject heading to let students easily see the list of topics that have already been posted.
  • Post the material directly to the thread.
  •  Do not post word documents that need to be opened to be read.

Label each section according to the following that might apply to your topic:
