What does it mean to be a change agent?

Discussion Question

Effective leadership can help nurse leaders to bring about a desirable change within the system. Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, gain adequate insight into change theories and change management, and answer the following questions:

  • What does it mean to be a change agent? Give two examples of when you were a change agent or witnessed another nurse as a change agent
  • What happened and how did the change occur? Citations should conform to APA guidelines. You may use this APA Citation Helper as a convenient reference for properly citing resources or connect to the APA Style website through the APA icon below.

Discuss your topic and its relationship to your current (or future) practice. Discuss why the topic is important in healthcare informatics.

Beginning in Module 1 of this course you have been researching a healthcare informatics topic of your choice. Now you will present your findings in a 7 to 12 minute recorded presentation complete with PowerPoint slides (no length requirement).

  • Discuss your topic and its relationship to your current (or future) practice. Discuss why the topic is important in healthcare informatics.
  • What research have you have found on the topic? Describe how each scholarly article relates to the topic and your current (or future) practice. Describe what conclusions you have drawn based on your research of the topic.
  • What ethical or legal issues does this topic present?
  • Create a plan for implementing a change (or justify the need for no change). Who needs to be involved? What training programs are needed? Is there a need for on-going training? Discuss how you would evaluate the success of the change (or the continued success of what you are currently doing). What is the cost to implement or maintain this change? Who will be financially responsible? How feasible is this change?
  • Finally, identify how changes in public policy and technological advances in the future could impact this topic. What would those changes mean to the healthcare industry?

Social Movements that Defined a Decade

As the United States entered the 1980s, race and gender issues continued to take center stage, but other concerns also became the focus of many grassroots activists. From HIV/AIDS awareness to the environment, activists challenged local, state, and federal authorities and big business to improve the way of life for humans, animals, and the earth. In many cases, their activism not only raised awareness, but also spurred increasing government intervention.

For this week’s Discussion, you will identify a social movement that you believe defined a decade.

In preparation for this Discussion:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources. With these issues providing context for this time period, consider the many social change movements and issues that emerged or escalated during the 1980s and 1990s, including:
    • Quality of education (A Nation at Risk)
    • Access to health care
    • War on drugs
    • Gender inequalities (the feminization of poverty)
    • Ongoing civil rights movements
    • Gay rights
    • AIDS activism
    • Environmental issues
    • Urban and rural poverty
  • Using the Walden Library and other reliable resources, research these varied issues and movements to gain an overview of the breadth of concerns that impacted Americans in the 1980s and 90s. Consider the background of each and the populations that were impacted.
  • What changes have occurred regarding these issues?
  • What impact, if any, did these movements have on the United States and the world?
  • With these considerations in mind, select a movement that you think defined either the 1980s or the 1990s.

With these thoughts in mind:

 Question 1

Post a response to the Discussion Spark post. Your response should contain at least two significant paragraphs. Identify a historical social, political, or economic issue from the 1980s or 1990s that continue to adversely affect the United States today. Has a movement emerged to successfully address this issue? If yes, what impact has it had? If no, why do you think that no substantial movement has evolved?  continue to adversely affect the United States today. Has a movement emerged to successfully address this issue? If yes, what impact has it had? If no, why do you think that no substantial movement has evolved?

 Question 2

Post a 2- to 3-paragraph explanation of how one social movement defined either the decade of the 1980s or the decade of the 1990s. Include in your posting a brief description of the movement, a rationale for its relevance, and the impact that this movement has had on the both the United States and the world

Identify what major principles of sociological theory are addressed in the video.

  • Did You Hear That?
  • Stage 1: Brutalization
  • Stage 2: Belligerency
  • Stage 3: Violent Performances
  • Stage 4: Virulency
  • Violentization Interrupted

Consider the following theories as they relate to the video segments you selected:

  • Social structure theories view societal, financial, and social arrangements or structures as the primary cause of deviant and criminal behaviors.
  • Social process theories view deviant and criminal behaviors as evolving mechanisms learned through societal interaction.
  • Social development theories view deviant and criminal behaviors as part of a maturational process.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you:

  • Summarize the subject or content of each video segment chosen.
  • Identify what major principles of sociological theory are addressed in the video.
  • Explain how each of the video segments you selected align with the three theories outlined above.
  • Explain what social issues are raised in the video based on the three theories.
  • Explain the role of sociological theories on crime causation on policy implementation.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Fsmt311 Week 7 Forum And Responses

Fire modeling provides mathematical and scientific research into the behavior and problems associated with fire.  Fire modeling is a useful tool for any area of fire safety, especially fire protection engineering, fire investigation, and fire suppression.

Once you complete the Week 7 readings, write a post to achieve the following:

1. Briefly discuss the history and origin of fire modeling and why it has become an important tool in the fire service, especially in the fields of fire engineering and fire investigation.
2. Briefly discuss the difference between a zone model and a field model.
3. Read the article “The Use of Simulation in Fire Investigation” and briefly discuss how the Zone Model – Consolidated Model of Fire Growth and Smoke Transport (CFAST) and the Field Model – Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), differed in their experiment.
4. Read the “NIST Technical Note 1856” found in this week’s readings and then discuss the following:
a. Summarize the incident
b. Discuss the model used for the simulation
c. Discuss the results of the simulation

#1

The history of fire modeling can be traced back to the early 1940’s when mathematical and science formulas were developed to validate or refute how fire patterns developed. Beginning in 1975 fire modeling began to increase across the country as more and more universities and private sector companies such as laboratories utilized fore modeling to research fire patterns and behavior for safety related purposes (Nelson 2002).

The difference between a zone model and a field model can be best described as the field model being much more calculation intensive then a zone model. A zone model basically approximates a fire condition in a fire room based on a consistent gas layer with a heat source. A field model utilizes calculations to measure things such as heat and temperature (NIST 2007). Fire modeling is very helpful in planning for safety in future fire situations.

The article “The Use of Simulation in Fire Investigation” revealed that using both the zone model and the field model proved to be beneficial for future fire safety. The main difference appears to be that the Consolidated Model of Fire Growth (CFAST) (Zone model) was more accurate than the field model fire dynamic simulator (FDS) The article makes mention that both models proved beneficial but the CFAST was more accurate than the FDS model.

“NIST Technical Note 1856”

The report reviews an incident that occurred on June 2, 2011 in a residential basement fire in San Francisco California that resulted in the death of two San Francisco firefighters. The fire model utilized to research the incident was a Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) model, which is a field model type of fire modeling and is the most popular type of field modeling. The research of the fire utilizing the simulations summarized that the two fire fighters were caught in the flow path of the fire traveling from the basement to the front open portion of the fire building. The firefighter’s injuries from being caught in the flow path resulted in their deaths.

#2

1. Many in the fire profession would state that the use of mathematics and science as applied to fire-related dynamics began in the early 1940’s (Nelson, 2002).  As a result of this relatively recent application of math to fire dynamics, most scientists would call the profession/science young and relatively undeveloped. It is essential because it can show the characteristics of the fire and can help the investigator put the pieces together.

2. The zone model breaks down the compartment into two or three zones. Mostly they are the upper layer and the lower layer. Usually, the top layer is the hot gases and smoke, while the lower layer has cool air. It will show different aspects of the fire and how the two layers affect each other. Field models, or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, provide a method for modeling the fluid flow through a volume using numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. (Vigne, 2017)

3. During the simulation, the CFAST was the more accurate of the two, but both models helped attain the information learned.
4. San Francisco Fire Department was dispatched to an electrical fire on the morning of 2 June 2011. While searching for the seat of the fire, two firefighters ended up dying. The simulator was a field model called the CFD model.
