Select and watch a movie that depicts difficult or different methods of communication between individuals with a disability or with other special needs.  An example of this would be the 2003 movie Radio with Cuba Gooding Jr. There are many ways to view this movie on Netflix, HBO, Amazon, etc.

First, provide a short summary of the movie, and include the background on the main characters. As discussed in the previous module, utilize person-first language to describe individuals from specialized populations (example: “child with autism,” rather than “autistic child”).

Discuss the communication difficulties or barriers between the individuals in the movie. What misunderstandings or obstacles did you observe that prevented clear communication between the characters?

Lastly, apply this information directly to healthcare. Why does communication often breakdown between healthcare providers, and patients with special needs? What circumstances from the movie could also be applied to healthcare provider and patients?

Student Comment:
After viewing “3 Identical Strangers”, the first thing that came to mind was how ethically wrong these researchers were. These researchers violated research ethics by separating sets of twins/triplets and using them as science experiments without their knowledge nor consent. I believe that this experiment was not worth the risk/impact, because these men were faced with multiple mental health issues that could have been avoided or less likely to happen if they grew up together. I think that the researchers could have just not followed through with their research as the results of their experiments were never published. These researchers ruined the lives of many and did not have any second thought about it.

 

To complete this assignment, choose a day that will be your “Day of Compassion” and try your absolute best to live each minute of that day as compassionately as possible. In other words, for a full 24-hour period you should do your best to reduce suffering of others, help those in need, be considerate and respectful, and avoid causing harm to any living being.

When carrying out this assignment, leave no behavior unexamined from watching TV to eating lunch to decisions about giving time or money to others (for example, have you ever considered visiting the cats at the animal shelter or taking a shelter dog for a walk?). That is, don’t limit yourself to simply holding the door open for a stranger or petting a lonely dog; think about all the unnecessary suffering in the world, and strive for the greatest impact and deepest level of compassion without being phony or insincere. It is up to you to define what compassion is and to decide how best to realize it.

If you are already quite compassionate, try being compassionate toward groups you don’t often focus on, and even if your actions don’t differ much from how you normally behave, carefully observe and analyze what transpires during the day. If outside events make it difficult for you to participate on the designated day, or if you feel dissatisfied with your performance of the assignment, feel free to repeat the exercise on a later day.

Unit 2 Assignment: Impacts on Modern Fire Research

The fire service is no different than any other profession in that the use of technology is improving and helping us to do our jobs in a safer more efficient manner. These advances in technology are being driven from both military applications such as thermal imaging and GPS and private research such as compressed air foam. This week you are going to look closely at the various technologies and how they are being woven into our daily operations in fire protection services.
