Week One Journal

Your identity consists of multiple dimensions, which we might also call group memberships. Some of the most salient of these identities include your race, ethnicity, gender, social class, sexuality, physical and mental ability, nationality, and/or religion. Take a look at The diversity wheel (Links to an external site.) for a visual representation of all of the identities you might potentially have. Those at the center of the circle usually have the greatest impact on ones life chances and are most immediately visible to the rest of society.

For this journal assignment, you will explore your own identities by addressing the following:

Considering at least three of your core identities, give an example of how each impacts (or is noticeable in) your daily life.

Of the identities you listed above, which has contributed most to your overall identity?  Does the identity you feel is most significant in your life vary depending on the social context you may be in? In other words, does the identity you feel is most important vary throughout the day depending on the social situation you are in? Be sure to explain why or why not.

Thinking about these three identities, do you feel that your membership in these groups leads you to experience certain privileges or certain inequalities in our society? Give examples of these privileges and/or inequalities.

The following short videos may help you address these questions:

Identities & Inequalities (Links to an external site.)

Race, Class, Gender & Sexuality (Links to an external site.)

What is Privilege? (Links to an external site.)

This journal assignment should be two to three pages in length. You should integrate concepts from the weeks resources you reviewed, while also providing examples from your personal experiences that help support your ideas. Journal assignments provide you the opportunity to focus on exploring your own ideas rather than simply repeating the speakers ideas.

Any topic (writer’s choice)

The assessments in this course give you the opportunity to design a project plan. Throughout the 5 weeks, you will choose an organization, create a project, write project metrics, and develop a plan that includes a contingency plan. You may use the course textbook and outside resources for all assessments.

This week you will choose your organization and learn about its corporate values.

Review the case studies available in Connect. These can be found in the Case Studies folder on the main course page in Blackboard.

Choose one of the organizations to use for all weekly assessments. You will not be able to change your organization, so make sure you are comfortable with your choice.

Use the Degree of Alignment: Advanced Organizer template to:
Describe the mission, vision, values, structure, and culture of the company. Each description should be 75-100 words.
Based on your advanced organizer and further research on your company, analyze the degree of alignment between what the organization is currently doing (actions) and their mission, vision, values, structure, and culture. Think about what your company is doing right and on-brand and where there is room for improvement. Your analysis should be 500-750 words. Note: An organization is typically centered on its mission and vision, but it may not always do as its statement says.

Question

Throughout this course, you have studied both dark and light leadership theories. Now is the time to put that information to work by comparing and contrasting two prominent leaders from history, one a light (ethical) leader, the other a dark (unethical) leader. The point of this entire course is to provide you with enough education to compare and contrast dark and light leadership styles. By choosing real-world leaders from history you will develop a better understanding of why ethical leadership is so important to organizational success.

In your paper,

  • Identify two leaders from history, one dark (unethical) and one light (ethical).
  • Prepare a brief biography for each leader, focusing primarily on the event that makes them stand out in history.
  • Describe the leadership style the individual uses most and why.
  • Define the leadership style used by this leader.
  • Explain how the leader demonstrates this leadership style.
  • Analyze the particular act or behavior that makes this leader ethical or unethical.
  • Describe the effects the leader may have had on the organization they led.
  • Explain in first person the most important lesson you have learned from this course and how you can use this information in future situations.

The Comparing and Contrasting Dark and Light Leaders paper

  • Must be five to seven double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages and formatted according to APA Style as outlined in the Writing Centers  resource.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Students name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructors name
    • Date submitted
  • For further assistance with the formatting and the title page, refer to .
  • Must utilize academic voice. See the  resource for additional guidance.
