Analyze 1

The minister black veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Using the short story above show how the author uses the plot the setting the characterization and the point of viewto engage readers in the theme(s) of the story BEING SURE TO IDENTIFY IT/THEM.
-How do the elements work together to help the author create a reaction?
This essay will require analysis. Dont bother retelling the story.
Instead take the story apart to see how the pieces interact. Show us cause-and-effect relationships the causes being the elements the effects being the readers reactions and the relationships being the means by which the reactions were evoked. Identify the general effect in a Thesis Statement (or Statement of the Controlling Idea).
-Make use of frequent references to the story (and perhaps information in other parts of Clayton) in order to support your Controlling Idea.
-Cite all references But remember the references themselves will not be sufficient: You have to draw the connection.

In addition many of these issues affect various direct/indirect environmental values that are important to all people. The process to create policies that effectively and efficiently address these environmental issues is complex and difficult. In your Final Paper you will be tasked to discuss analyze and evaluate one of the following environmental issues and then recommend a policy to address the issue. Select an environmental issue that interests you from the list below:

Discussion – Stem Cell Research

A controversial issue closely related to cloning that has caused a lot of debate is the use of embryonic stem cells. One possible application of these cells is that they may be able to supply replacement tissues to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease diabetes paralysis due to spinal cord injuries and other degenerative diseases. The word embryonic has caused fierce opposition to this type of research because embryos are destroyed when the stem cells are removed. Questions that have surfaced in this debate include: When a cell nucleus is transferred to another cell have we created life? Does a stem cell have the same status as a human? What should be done with the embryos that are left over at in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics? Advocates argue that the medical benefits of stem cell research would be enormous. Opponents argue that life begins at conception and thus this type of research is abortion.
Based on what you have read explain why you are for or against stem cell research. How would you explain your position to someone who disagrees with you?

Environmental Controversy – Immigration and Population in the U.S.

This week’s environmental controversy focuses on the question: should Immigration into the US be reduced? Review the background information. Then using the References along with resources from your own research write a 1-2 page response to the questions that follow. Remember to cite your sources using proper APA format.
Background Information
Legal and illegal immigration into the United States is discussed in your textbook. Advocates of liberal immigration argue that both legal and illegal immigrants are needed to perform difficult and low paying jobs that most citizens won’t take. Advocates also sympathize with immigrants because many of them are fleeing poverty and tyranny in their homelands. Immigrants pay taxes help to support the US social security system and contribute to American society.
Opponents of immigration include individuals that want to ban or significantly reduce all immigration and those that simply want more stringent efforts to end illegal immigration. Opponents argue that current immigration policies and border patrol methods are too lenient and allow terrorists to infiltrate into the US.
Two short articles identified below have very different views on the impacts of illegal immigration on state economies. Use these references along with resources from your own research to help answer the questions that follow.
PR N. (2014 June 19). Illegal Immigration Costs California Taxpayers More Than $25 Billion a Year Finds FAIR. PR Newswire US.

Hoyt J. (2004 May 10). Why business should speak out on immigrant workers. Crain’s Chicago Business 27(19) 11-11. Retrieved April 14 2009 from Regional Business News database.

Questions
How do the views presented in the articles differ? How does illegal immigration both hurt and help state economies? Do you feel that the author’s of these two articles are ignoring each others side or is it possible that the Illinois economy is simply better equipped to absorb illegal immigration? Before answering this final question make sure to consider the affiliations of the authors.

Environment in the News 2

Environment in the News ES 200
Student guideline:
I want you to do two different assignments both assignments should be approximately two double-spaced pages in length. So total of 4 pages two different topics two different files. I provided the three chapters for this week these two assignment should be related to the course topics for this week. I also added a sample for the Environment in the news so you can have an idea how this assignment looks like.
Professor guideline:
You will complete two Environment in the News log activities per week for each of the four weeks. Each log entry must describe an environmental event that has happened since June 1 2015 is tied in some way to human effects on the environment and is related to the course topics covered in the textbook for that week. A good log entry describes the event explains why the event caught the students interest relates the event to specific course content in the textbook and is based on a strong reference source. The event can be something that humans did to the environment or something that the environment did to humans (as long as humans had a role in creating the event); it can also be release of new data or studies on topics related to the impact of humans on the environment. Because environmental science is a broad umbrella (see Chapter 1) it includes the social sciences as well as the physical and biological sciences; consequently log entries can also include social science topics related to human impact on the environment. Sample data sources are provided on the course Moodle site. Log entries should be approximately two double-spaced pages in length.

Stages of Change #2
This is where you will upload your write up for the second of two Stages of Change Projects. Write about 400 words describing what you did why you selected the project what the effect would be if everyone in your local area did what you did why you think more people are not doing it and what you could do to convince more people to do the activity.
