Description: Language in the Wild Assignment 300 words

LitW Step Two:Describe the situationgiving information that will berelevant and necessaryto your analysis.
I expect this will take a minimum of 300 words. Include your transcript (with any revisions needed) above the description but this is not included in the word count.
Use clear plain language. You may find it helpful to refer to Hymes SPEAKING model for describing interaction; you can also refer to the list below.
Your task is here is to determine what information isrelevant and necessaryto understand your analysis. Aim to give neithertoo littlenorradically too muchinformation so that someone who has not witnessed the speech act/event can understand what is going on.
Remember also that as a linguistic anthropologist-in-training your goal should be to remove yourself from your everyday taken-for-granted insider’s understanding of what is going on here and try to adopt a distanced analytical perspective. For those writing about interactions they participated in this will be especially tricky. Use the tools of sociolinguistic analysis we have been learning to help you do this.

Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job its yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Masters degrees so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelors degree and continue on to a Masters degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement but the new company does not.
Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You on the other hand want to encourage your childs confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your childs class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Scenario 4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you arrive and return another co-worker is already there and you wonder whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your weekly sales meeting you are informed of your co-workers outstanding sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field and as a result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired.

Compare and Contrast Two News Pieces

Coverage by of the news is not carried out by any monolithic organization that gets to decide what is and is not the correct way to report the news. Today perhaps more than ever the editorial or opinion piece of the news is more apparent and widespread than it had been in the decades before cable news 24-hour-news cycles and the rise of the Internet as a news source. This does not necessarily mean that the news has become any less impartial simply that news organizations are more conscious of markets and demographics the people they are trying to attract than ever before.
For your assignment this week find two articles that address the same issue produced by two different news sources (this cannot be the same AP story published by different sources). In 1-2 pages provide a summary of what message each writer is trying to get across and provide a brief compare and contrast analysis of the two pieces. Explain which piece you feel is more effective and why. Be sure to include links for each article in your assignment.

Now that you have completed the Research Plan and the Stasis Model we will begin the process of testing our argument and gathering more information specifically to support our position. Make sure that you gather good credible information and that you cite your sources in the body of the outline. Please consult the examples folder if you have questions or you may contact me any time.
Toulmin Schema Worksheet
In English 2010 we use the Toulmin Schema to test our arguments and to develop a detailed outline of our Persuasive Research papers. One of the reasons it is useful in this process is that it focuses primarily on what we can validate with research orlogic(logos)instead of relying on the emotional responses that often limit our research and discussion about many topics. We can then add appeals toemotion(pathos) that are useful to our specific audience as we prepare to write the essay. The following version of Toulmin is tailored specifically to English 2010 and designed to test the working thesis sentence developed in the policy proposal portion of the Stasis Model.
Claim:This should be the first part of your newly developed working thesis sentence
Reasons:This are the because clauses of your working thesis statement
Assumptions:What assumptions do you have about the topic and why? What points of agreement (values) do you and your audience share? According to your research what are the presumed assumptions your audience has about the topic and why?
Backing:Think of this as a place to list the evidence both personal and researched which supports your claim and reasons. This will be the longest portion of the essay.
(Personal/Brainstorming)
(Cited Research)
Conditions of Rebuttal:What are other people saying about your topic? How will they attack your position? What are their strongest points? Be sure to explore each point in detail gathering source information to fully understand why people hold that position and to more fully evaluate the counterargument.
Qualifier:Revised thesis statement based on the conditions of rebuttal. What can you still realistically argue? Are there ways to adjust your thesis to include some ideas from the rebuttals or a way to counter them by changing the thesis?
