Module 1 Discussion: “Everyday Use”

After having read the Alice Walker story “Everyday Use,” please address the following discussion question and take part as directed.

The process of characterization–which will be the topic of our second major essay later on–is a process every author who has ever written uses to create his or her characters–even when the “character” is a robot, rabbit, straw or tin man, literally every character used in any writing. Authors have only four options to create a character:

1. have the character say something

2. have the character do something

3. have someone else reveal something about the character

or, more rarely,

4. step in as the author-narrator and tell about the character himself or herself

Alice Walker does nothing less than an absolutely amazing job of characterizing Dee for us–even though some of us will take her differently from others–and she does this through the things Dee does, days, and some few things her sister and mother tell us about Dee. Alice Walker does not ever step into this story and interrupt the narrator’s, Ms. Johnson’s monologue and narrative about Dee’s visit on this one occasion. For this discussion, point out one very important thing Dee does, Dee says, or Maggie or her mother says about Dee, something that really reveals something important about Dee. This will not be difficult as you very likely already know. Please follow the directions about participation and the quality and substance of your posts. More is better, and you will, therefore, receive somewhere between 1 and 100 points for your effort on this discussion.

NUTR 100 6390 Elements of Nutrition (2178) – Credible and Reliable Nutrition Sources

Credible and Reliable Nutrition Sources (40 points)
Instructions

Perform a quick Internet search, using Google or another major search engine. Select a search term related to nutrition science (for example, diet, organic, sodium) and see what kind of results you receive. When considering a term to select, think about single words rather than phrases. In some cases your search term may contain two words (for example, unsaturated fat). Avoid phrases like “which diet will help me lose weight the fastest” or “top 10 foods to make me healthy.”

Write a short essay (at least 250 words), using complete paragraphs and appropriate organization. Avoid incomplete sentences or bulleted lists (except for your search term and how many results were obtained). Check your spelling and grammar before submitting. References are required in APA format.

Please provide the following information (listed in bulleted form):

  • your search term
  • how many results you obtained

Then review some of these sources, going no further than three pages into the search result. Critically evaluate the websites you have selected. Find one website that you consider a reliable/credible source and one that you consider false, misleading, or non-factual. Keep in mind that when searching for credible sources you should also determine if your source would be appropriate to use as a scholarly reference (to support your discussions and homework assignments). Please provide the following for BOTH the credible and non-credible choices:

  • the name of the website and the link
  • the author or group providing this information
  • Is this a reliable/credible source? If so, how do you know? OR Is this a non-credible source? If so, how do you know?
  • What was the hardest part about sifting through nutrition information?

The Relationship Between Language and Thinking

Research a quote about language and thought.

  • For example, a quote by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, believed that thought without language was impossible: “The limits of my language are the limits of my life.”
  • Next, examine whether or not it is possible to think without using language.
  • Argue for or against the ways a person might enact “languageless” thinking.
  • If you believe it is not possible, describe the major problems with languageless thinking.

The Work of Angles and demons

Each “essay set” assignment comprises a set of 2 distinct essay question prompts designed to stimulate the student’s thinking and assess the knowledge gleaned from the textbook and course reading. Each essay question should be answered with a 1 page double spaced essay, but compiled and submitted as a single document (2 essays for a total of 2–4 pages, double spaced). It is expected that the course textbook and assigned reading will qualify as the primary sources for writing essays; however, students are permitted to use other sources. Any sources quoted or used in the essay should be cited. Each essay is meant to answer a related group of questions, so it is important that you are thorough in answering the questions completely.

Essay 4

For this final essay, you decide to again meet the gentlemen from the coffee shop. Through your discussion he states that there are a lot of opinions surrounding the doctrine of angels. This has caused him a lot of confusion, particularly when it comes to how they work. In the first prompt, explain to him the work and ministry of angels as it pertains to both heaven and earth.

As a follow up, he is then curious in knowing your opinion when it comes to demons. Explain to him some of the foundational ideas surrounding demons. Who are they? What is their activity? Be sure to use relevant Scripture and supporting sources to substantiate your response.

Speak with your mentor teacher about differentiation. What considerations are taken into account when learning activities are differentiated for the students in the classroom? Use this field experience to gather ideas for your lessons in Topic 6.

Based on what you have learned from your observations, address the following questions in a 250-500 word reflection.

  1. What were some of the learning strategies and activities utilized during the lesson?
  2. How were the students grouped during the learning activities?
  3. What types of things are taken into account when differentiating learning activities
