Explore Ed Tech Tools: Photo Sharing, Images, and Social Networking

You will explore tools and websites to learn more about the use of photo sharing, images, and social networking tools in education. After completing the readings and exploring some of the websites and multimedia listed in the Week One Resources document, try out a tool from each of these categories:

Photo storage sites: Flickr (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. or Shutterfly (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (See the instructions for the “Collect Images and Create Flickr Album” assignment to find out how you will be using a photo storage site to complete this week’s assignment.)
Social networking website (professional): You explored LinkedIn (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for your introductory post, but here are others you might want to investigate: The Top 18 Educational Social Networking Websites for Teachers (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2012/12/social-networking-sites-teachers.html

You read about using images and photo sharing in this week’s resources. As you prepare your initial post for this discussion, consider the following questions:

What are some advantages of collecting images on a site like Flickr?
How can a teacher use these tools in the classroom to help students learn?

Note: be sure to examine the Instructor Guidance and the Week One Resources document for help with this assignment.

Initial Post

Think about how each of the tools you explored can enhance teaching and/or learning. Give a specific example of an educational use of:
a photo storage tool
a social networking tool such as LinkedIn
the use of images in teaching to help student learning.

Choose one of the tools you examined and explain how it can be used in a specified grade and content area to meet a learning objective. For example, you might write: “Glogster (a poster making tool) would be great to use for fourth-grade book reports in a reading lesson. Glogster would help visual readers create a pictorial representation of their book to illustrate a character or setting. This activity would help students compare their classmates’ interpretations of characters and settings to their own ideas and promote a richer discussion and deeper understanding of these story elements.”

Foundations of Educational Technology Week 1

Pros and Cons of Using Educational Technology in Schools

Explore four of the sources listed under the “Using Technology in Schools” section of the Week One Resources document. If long, skim the source to get the main ideas. Choose two sources that focus on the pros of technology in schools, and two sources that focus on the cons of using technology in schools. Alternatively, you can choose up to two of the sources that focus on both the pros and cons for two of your four choices.

Initial Post

List the title of each the sources you chose, and list the main points or arguments made by each author.
Next, give your opinion of the content you explored, focusing on the questions below. Elaborate on your opinions, citing each source to support your ideas.
How can technology best be used in schools?
What factors contribute to successful technology use in schools?
Are there some technologies that should not be used in schools?
Should we stop trying to integrate technology in schools?

Include a title slide and references slide; however, they do not count toward the total slide count. Use APA Style for all intext and reference citations. Save all of your work, and submit it in Blackboard for grading.

Public Health Response to Possible Crisis

In this assignment, you will submit a research plan for a public health department to investigate a possible crisis and recommend a public health response to this potential crisis.

Directions:

Read through the following Centervale scenario and investigate the linkages between the health and illness problems in Centervale and the water supplies and waste disposal services. You must consider the full public health impact of the landfill situation and the water supply policies.
Centervale’s Landfill Facility

Centervale’s landfill facility has accepted, with the town’s approval, contaminated soil from the Middle Earth Energy Corporation. The landfill is located above ground and the operators plan on selling the soil to small farms in the county. The soil is known to be contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and lead that exceed the limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the past, the EPA has discovered several leaks in the landfill’s liner.

The landfill is located above the town’s main aquifer, which supplies well water to 10,000 residents who live in either Simon or Diamond Townships. In Taylor Township, 750 residents use both well water and Metropolis water for small farms. The other residents only use well water.
Part 1: Research Plan

Design a detailed 4-page plan to research the impact of these services on the community’s health. Your plan must diagram or otherwise specify the steps from research to risk assessment and propose a plan for risk management. In your plan, include the following:

Identify the potential crisis and use that information to develop a clearly stated research objective.
Identify the data that must be collected and justify the purpose of collecting the data.
Identify possible collaborators in data collections.
Identify and justify the type of studies that need to be designed.
Predict any barriers to conducting research.
Use your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet to conduct research. Cite all the sources. Organize the information in a logical structure. Support your ideas with research information and reasons. Consider important alternatives and explain why you select a particular one. You may use your previous assignments for justification of your plan.

Part 2: Response Plan

Consider the full public health impact of the event and how your research will be applied. Design a 4-page detailed set of recommendations for action to remove or minimize risk to Centervale citizens, including the following:

Describe and justify the persons or agencies that must be contacted.
Identify possible collaborators in reducing risk, and explain what they can do to reduce the risk.
Justify the expense (i.e., time, labor, equipment, or money) each collaborator would incur by explaining how their action would result in benefits.
Describe and justify the type of monitoring that would be needed.
Predict any barriers to implementing your interventions.
Use your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet to conduct research. Cite all the sources. Organize the information in a logical structure. Support your recommendations with research information and reasons. Consider important alternatives and explain why you select a particular one.

Recommendations for this assignment:
To prepare the health plan, you may begin with an outline with two levels of headings. For each heading and subheading, describe the information you plan to include in 1–2 sentences. You may contact your facilitator with an outline of your plan before submitting the final paper before the final assignment is due.

You should utilize at least 5 scholarly sources beyond the course readings in your research. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Age of Oil

Question environmental science
As you know, our world is heavily dependent on oil. In Chapter 6 of Contemporary Environmental Issues, you have read that there is concern about the possibility of reaching a peak in oil production, while Chapter 8 of Contemporary Environmental Issues introduces a variety of possible alternative energy sources. Based on the concern that we may be running out of oil, describe at least two renewable alternatives to oil that are currently available and discuss the barriers that keep these alternatives from replacing oil as our primary means of energy.

Latroya Lavigne
One renewable alternative to oil is ethanol. Ethanol is comprised of corn, sugar, and switch grass of which 10 percent is mixed with gas making e10. E10 is a noteworthy substitute for conventional 100 percent fuel (Kopp, 2006). Kopp destinations the way that as ethanol winds up noticeably well known, generation will build which implies an expanded cost to buyers as one reason that ethanol still can’t seem to totally supplant fuel as an essential vitality source. Shale gas is another accessible option that is saved uniquely in contrast to different gasses and requires an even penetrating strategy to discharge the gas from rocks. Well shale gas has expanded underway, the technique for hydro fracturing use to discharge the gas has caused little tremors and the chemicals utilized as a part of the procedure may make water supplies perilous for utilization (Turk and Bensel, 2011). The administration assumes an essential part in safeguarding that the change to fuel options is a smooth one. One method for doing this is to offer natives government motivations and authorize strict ecological laws (Mingyuan, n.d.).

Matthew Gray

Hydropower – this alternative to oil uses the force of falling water to produce electricity. According to the website https://www.hydropower.org/a-brief-history-of-hydropower (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.hydropower has been used for many different purposes early as the Han Dynasty between 2002 BC and 9 AD. French engineer Benoit Fourneyron first used it to produce power in 1827.
In modern times one of the more common methods is to build a tall dam and the water behind the dam is diverted to a reservoir. In the internal workings of the dam, water flows down through the dam picking up speed and turning turbines. This in turn spins electromagnets near stationary coils of wire producing electrical current. This is a very clean form of energy that is renewed by rainfall. Once the dam is built it doesn’t require fuel to run helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is cheap to operate and maintain and it is proven and reliable. There are barriers that will keep it from totally replacing oil, specifically lack of areas to develop the dams needed to produce hydropower. The United States in particular has developed many of the areas suitable to this type of power.

Solar Power – this alternative to oil uses the Sun. It uses solar photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electricity. Another way to convert solar energy into electricity is through solar thermal of concentrating soar power systems. Mirrors are used to concentrate the sun’s rays on a tank or a pipe that contains fluid. This can produce steam that can be used to spin a turbine that generates electricity. Solar power has its limitation when trying to used it to replace oil completely. Depending on the season and where in the world you are the sun is only up for part of the day and in different intensities. It is also degraded by weather and dust.

According to the website http://www.seia.org/research-resources/solar-industry-data (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. in the last decade solar have experienced an average annual growth rate of 68% and the cost to install solar on your home has dropped more than 70% since 2010. It is a growing trend that will help to cut into oil usage in the future if it keeps growing at that rate.

Experimental Design Methodology

Following the extensive literature review, the researcher must decide how he or she will address the questions being asked. This is done by formulating an experimental design that will allow for the objective testing of the hypotheses. Assume again that you want to test the interaction between farming and water quality. Based on background research and an extensive literature review, you have come up with the following hypothesis: If a lake is located directly adjacent to an agricultural field, then it will have higher levels of phosphorous in the water than lakes located more than 500 meters from an agricultural site.

Begin this assignment by reading the “How Do I Write the…Methods” as listed in your required readings. Then, read the scientific journal article from Macreadie, Hughes, and Kimbro (2013) paying particular attention to how the methods section is written.

Now you are to design an experiment to test the hypothesis. In one page or less, list your proposed study site, independent variable(s), dependent variable(s), experimental group, control group, and number of replicates. Then, write a two- to -four page methods section for your proposed design. You should use the knowledge learned through this week’s readings to formulate an accurate and concise experimental design. As explained in your readings, the methods should provide enough detail so that other scientists could repeat your work and verify your findings. Pretend that you have already completed the study and utilize the past tense throughout the section. Reading through the methods sections of the paper by Macreadie, Hughes, and Kimbro (2013) should provide you with a strong example of how a methods section should be written.
