McDonald’s – The Coffee Spill Heard ‘Round the World

McDonald’s – The Coffee Spill Heard ‘Round the World

The coffee spill lawsuit against McDonald’s launched a host of other lawsuits against the same company.  What are McDonald’s social responsibilities towards consumers and consumer’s responsibilities towards McDonalds?  In an essay, using APA style, address the following points: Length 2 full pages, excluding reference, abstract and title page:

• Evaluate the coffee spill lawsuit.• Determine what type of actions the company could make to meet ethical obligations.• What are the arguments supporting McDonald’s position in the Liebeck case?  What are the arguments supporting Liebeck’s position?• If you had been a juror in the Liebeck case which position would you most likely have supported?   Why?  What if you had been a juror in the pickle burn case (you must do additional research to find out information about the pickle burn case)?• Do we now live in a society where businesses are responsible for customers’ accidents or carelessness in using products?

Do natural phenomena such as hemoglobin levels or the weight of ants really follow a normal distribution?

You will find Video 6: The Normal Distribution by navigating to the MSL Tool for Success link under Course Home.

This video explains the normal distribution via the binomial distribution: The distribution of the number of heads thrown on 20 coins approximates the normal. This is used to explain that the normal distribution is the mathematical consequence of adding up a large number of random events. Some examples are given of normal distributions in the natural world (mass of ants) and social world (age of marathon runners) and explained in terms of these phenomena resulting from the aggregation of random events.

Respond to one of the following questions in your initial post:

  • What is the link between the normal distribution and Video 5: Variation 2 (and Egg Roulette), where we relied on statements such as “about two-thirds of observations are within one standard deviation of the
    mean”?
  • Do natural phenomena such as hemoglobin levels or the weight of ants really follow a normal distribution? If you add up a large number of random events, you get a normal distribution.
  • How large a number makes a normal distribution?

Your initial post should be 150 to 250 words in length. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7 in at least one paragraph.

Ethical Issue In Business Paper

Ethical Issue In Business Paper

Write a typed, double-spaced paper (two or three pages in length) analyzing a case raising an ethical issue relevant to the professions. In doing so, it is often useful to interview one or more individuals with work experience in your field. (See below.)

a. Describe a case (preferably pertaining to the field in which I expect to work, business field) that raises pertinent ETHICAL issues. Include all information about the case relevant to an ethical analysis.

–Note that the case must raise a substantive ethical issue. That usually means that it is not initially clear which course of action is morally best. Papers that do not focus on a controversial or difficult ETHICAL question will not receive credit.

b. Develop an Ethical Analysis of the case:

i. What courses of action are available? (What are the options?)

iia. What are the relevant models, values, principles, guiding ideas and weighing factors? You should explicitly discuss several ethical factors that apply to your case, such as the principle of universality, the Golden Rule, the autonomy model of medicine (if the case is about a patient/medical provider interaction / in my case about the business field), etc. How many factors are relevant depends on your case.

iib. How do these considerations apply to your case?

iii. Give reasons for thinking some of these factors are more central or relevant than others.

iv. On the basis of that analysis, which is the best course of action?

v. What needs to be monitored after the decision is made?

The Effectiveness Of Rehabilitative Crime Policy

The Effectiveness Of Rehabilitative Crime Policy

Context: Until the 1970s, the need to individually assess offenders in attempts to understand and reform them was the norm in correctional facilities. However, this method of providing individualized assessment and treatment for each offender was enormously taxing on the criminal justice system.

Over time, populations increased, crime rates rose, and technology gave way to new avenues for crime to enter the lives of normal citizens. The traditional, individualized methods of treatment involved in rehabilitation came under scrutiny as the public raised its voice for the rights of victims to be recognized and for public funds to be refocused on more effective means of crime control. Research by Robert Martinson on the effectiveness of the rehabilitative nature of the system identified that, in total, the efforts of the rehabilitative model were ineffective.

Task Description: Analyze recidivism rates for a category of crime that interests you. Research responses of victims who have identified the impact of recidivism by their offender either revictimizing them or preying upon another.

  1. What are the psychological effects of recidivism?
  2. What are the social effects of recidivism?
  3. What are the economic effects of recidivism?
