The Literature Review 

A literature review provides an overview of previous research on a topic that critically evaluates, classifies, and compares what has already been published on a particular topic. It allows the author to synthesize and place into context the research and scholarly literature relevant to the topic. It helps map out the different approaches to a given question and reveals patterns. It should form the foundation for the author’s subsequent research and justifies the significance of the new investigation. 

There are numerous social methods books which will give you useful info about the literature review. This advice includes everything from how to select literature for inclusion, analysing and categorising, structure and writing. We recognise the following book as particularly good and it’s 

Oliver, P. (2012). Succeeding with your Literature Review: A Handbook for Students. UK: Open 

University Press. 

When reading for your literature review you should ask yourself the following questions: 

1. Who are the key researchers on this topic? 

2. What has been the focus of the research efforts so far and what is the current status? 

3. How have certain studies built on prior studies? Where are the connections? Are there 

new interpretations of the research? 

4. Have there been any controversies or debate about the research? Is there consensus? Are 

there any contradictions? 

5. Which areas have been identified as needing further research? Have any pathways been suggested? 

6. How will your topic uniquely contribute to this body of knowledge? 

7. Which methodologies have researchers used and which appear to be the most productive? 8. What sources of information or data were identified that might be useful to you? 

9. How does your particular topic fit into the larger context of what has already been done? 

10. How has the research that has already been done help frame your current investigation?

TOPIC: The Social function of the folktale and fairytale

For your final paper, will respond to one of the following prompts in an 6-8 page paper using MLA formatting:

Examine the ways in which the African folktales differ from the European folktales and why the tales evolved thusly

For this assignment:

The Deinstitutionalization of the Mentally ill

Essay should be persuasive. You must address two perspectives about the issue to demonstrate knowledge of the debates about the issue, then present a cohesive argument that supports one perspective supported by your reference materials. A minimum of eight references will be required. You may use both Internet sources and non-Internet sources in writing the paper. However, your sources need to be of good quality. Using the selected media, write a 750-1,000-word paper addressing the impact the media has on the cognitive, physical, and psychosocial development during middle childhood. Include the following in your paper:

Successful Change Versus a Dismal Failure

Using the Ashford University Library, locate and discuss a scholarly article that describes a successful change initiative within an organization. Next, locate and discuss a scholarly article that describes a failed change initiative within an organization. Compare and contrast the implementation theories used for the change events discussed in the two articles. Provide a summation of what could have been done to make the failed initiative a success.

Your paper should be three to four pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages). Your paper must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, and it must include references and in-text citations for at least two scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library, in addition to the course text

Case # 2 Keisha

Keisha, age 5, and her sisters, ages 4 and 7 resided with their maternal grandmother in a poor inner city neighborhood. The girls’ mother had left them in her mother’s care because of her dependence on drugs and alcohol and inability to care for her children. It was a hot humid summer in a Midwestern state and the neighbors call the city health department about a putrid smell on their block. The health department investigated, narrowing the source of the odor to a shed in Keisha’s grandmother’s backyard shed. The decomposing body of Keisha was found in that shed. 

The case was referred to my agency by Children and Family Services for intervention with Keisha’s sisters. The following information was gathered from the police reports and interviews with Keisha’s sisters. 

The girls had been living with grandma for about 6 months but had stayed with her sporadically at prior times when mom “dropped them off”.

Of the three girls, Keisha was the most active and inquisitive. According to the sisters she was often “bad” and made grandma “mad”.

An autopsy identified the cause of Keisha’s death as “blunt force trauma to the head”.

The girls recalled that “When Keisha was bad Grandma kicked her or punched her.”

The day that Keisha “fell asleep and didn’t wake up Grandma kept hitting Keisha’s head on the floor”. That day the sisters helped their grandmother carry Keisha downstairs and put her in the shed so she could sleep without being disturbed. “Keisha never woke up.”

The grandmother was arrested for child abuse and the sisters were placed in foster care. The girls’ mother could not be located.

You are the social worker assigned to the sisters. 1) How would you explain your purpose for seeing the girls? 2) How would you establish a relationship with the girls? 3) Would you explain death and that Keisha would not be waking up from her “sleep”? 4) What type of treatment plan would you create to assist the sisters in dealing with their traumas?
