As the world continues to become more diverse and multicultural, you  will find yourself interacting with individuals who differ from you in  many significant ways.  This diversity brings with it many great  benefits but it can also impact communication and relationships in  unexpected ways.  Consider if you, as a professional in Human Services,  have to provide in-home services to a family that has recently  immigrated to the United States from another country.  How might this  diversity impact expectations, communication, and relationships of all  involved?  Could you gather some information related to their culture  prior to engaging with them? 

Purpose:   This  interview and paper project focuses on exploring and learning about  cultural differences in interpersonal relations and communication.  One  way to safely experience and identify differences is through  interviewing a person from a culture significantly different from your  own. 

Overview:  Students will conduct an interview with an individual who identifies as being of another culture. The  person interviewed must differ from you in at least two significant  ways (culture, religion, primary language, country of origin).  There  are two parts of this project:  the first being the interview, and the  second is academic research on aspects of your interviewee's culture.  Your  written explanation, description, and outside validation (through  references) will point out the differences you find between cultures.   

The paper must follow APA style, and will include a title page,  reference page, and running header.  No abstract is needed.  APA  standards include size 12 Times New Roman font, double-spaced and normal  margins.  You may use the following as guidelines for headers:

Introduction
Introduce your interviewee, how you know the person, and describe  the cultural differences and reason for choosing this person.  Include a  thesis statement explaining the research aspect of the assignment.   Clearly identify the part of the culture that you chose to explore.  
Interview
Write a narrative summary of the interview, where you paraphrase  the discussion and highlight what you've learned about the cultural  differences of the interviewee.  You may relate some of the interview to  course material.  
Related Research
This section will cover the research aspect of the assignment.   Explain why the topic interested you, and continue your discussion  using APA standards for in-text citing.  Remember to integrate what you  learned about your interviewee in with your research.  
Conclusion
A strong conclusion paragraph is expected to summarize and tie  together what you learned throughout the interview and research.

Find a specific job opening posted online within the last 9 months. You will develop a Job Application Cover Letter (as though you were applying to that position) that highlights and emphasizes why you are the most suitable candidate for this position. For the purposes of this assignment, you can present yourself as a recent graduate if needed.

Art Assignment

There are many examples of public sculpture in Santa Barbara.  Some of the most prominent and easily accessible are the sculpture/fountain Mentors (Aris Demetrios) on the SBCC West Campus, Three Triangles (Fletcher Benton) SBCC East Campus, on the ocean side of the bookstore, Intermezzo (Anthony Caro) at the side of La Arcada (between the rear entrance to the Santa Barbara Art Museum and the public library), and Up Ended (Clement Meadmore) on the UCSB campus, on the lawn east of North Hall.  For this assignment you are to study first-hand one of these sculptures.  Look at it carefully and analyze what you see and what you think about the work.   Write a 400 to 600 word paper that discusses the piece as public sculpture. Start with a description of the sculpture and it’s context (setting); discuss whether it does or doesn’t work with the surroundings; finish with your assessment of the sculpture’s cultural and aesthetic value.

This is an assignment based on your own observation, not on Internet research; do not write about the history of the sculpture, do not include what other people have said, write only about what you see and what you think.  You do not need to send an image if your subject is one of the sculptures listed above. If you don’t live in the Santa Barbara area then there is likely to be public sculpture where you live.  Write about that, but I would appreciate a photograph or sketch of the piece submitted electronically by email if you can’t get it into the Submission tool.

To help you write this, use what you’ve learned so far and ask questions of the piece.  What is the theme (decipher the iconography)?  What is the form and content?  Is it representational, abstract, or non-objective?  Go through chapters 1-2 and find other terms and ideas that will help you come to an opinion about the piece as public sculpture.

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Cultural, Ethical, And Other Considerations Impacting Research Efforts

Charles Draper, Centervale's Chief of Police, must introduce policies that positively impact the control and management of illegal immigration in his city. He is without the knowledge base needed to develop policy and has turned to you for assistance with research in one of the following areas:

• Surveillance techniques: Chief Draper is aware of many surveillance techniques that can be utilized in tracking and controlling illegal immigrants in his city. The Chief would like information regarding the most successful surveillance techniques as demonstrated in published research. Specifically, you are to research and address, but are not limited to, the following surveillance technique examples: vehicle tracking, cell phone, e-mail, background checks, and computer and surveillance techniques.
• Crime mapping: Chief Draper knows that many law enforcement agencies use crime-data mapping generated from within their own communities to allocate resources, as indicated by the data. In particular, the Chief would like to know how the data are generated and then how the data are applied to police tactics. Your research should include but is not limited to the following crime mapping areas: geographic information systems, census demographics, geographical profiles, and community and other crime mapping techniques.
• Staffing needs: Draper believes that the problems associated with illegal immigration require quick response times, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
