The Supreme Court consists of the chief justice of the United States and such number of associate justices as may be fixed by Congress. The number of associate justices is currently fixed at eight. Power to nominate the Justices is vested in the president of the United States, and appointments are made with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Constitution further provides that “the Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour, and shall, at stated Times, receive for their Services, a Compensation, which shall not be diminished during their Continuance in Office” (U.S. Const., art. III, § 1).For this discussion, visit the official Web site of the Supreme Court of the United States. Choose one recent court decision from the past two years, and complete the following:

How much should the power of elected officials be limited?

Some government jobs require a high level of expertise. Scientists employed by the Centers for Disease Control are one example. To protect these civil servants, the amount of power elected officials and supervisors have over them is limited. But civil service rules create bureaucracy, making it very hard for elected officials to effect change quickly.

Respond to the following:
•             How much should the power of elected officials be limited?
•             Do you think civil service protections should be limited? For example, should elected officials have more power over hiring and firing?

Assignment: Dealing with Risk, Asymmetric Information, and Incentives

Earlier in the quarter we discussed Southwest Airlines’ use of game theory to create new strategy. Continue to research Southwest Airlines or a company of your choice and write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

1. Evaluate a company’s recent (with in the last year) actions dealing with risk and uncertainty.

2. Offer advice for improving risk management.

3. Examine an adverse selection problem your company is facing and recommend how it should minimize its negative impact on transactions.

4. Determine the ways your company is dealing with the moral hazard problem and suggest best practices used in the industry to deal with it.

5. Identify a principal-agent problem in your company and evaluate the tools it uses to align incentives and improve profitability.

Liability & Risks

Background:  TLG has scheduled another meeting with the GC owners to further discuss the risks and liabilities of tort law.  This meeting will  focus specifically on product liability.

Winnie and Ralph asked you to participate in the GC meeting and to be prepared to discuss specific product liability risks related to GC’s use and resale of EPI cleaning products. 

Instructions:  To prepare, review product liability law, product liability claims, and parties who can be sued in product liability cases using the assigned materials and Instructor Notes. 

Write a summary report addressing the following questions to use as a basis for discussion in the GC meeting with TLG and to educate GC owners about potential risks and liabilities under product liability law. 

A.  Analyze and explain specifically how and why GC could face risks under product liability for use of EPI cleaning products to clean GC clients’ commercial property.

Analyzing Media and Pop Culture; Theories of Celebrity Gossip

1. Structural Functionalism 

What is the function (or functions) of celebrity gossip for society? What purpose(s) does it serve, and how does it help society maintain stability and order? Discuss how notions of sacred and profane are characterized. Are there manifest and latent functions of celebrity gossip? Are there any dysfunctions in it?

2. Conflict Theory

What forms of inequality are revealed in celebrity gossip? In particular, what does it have to say about class, race, gender, sexuality, or other inequalities? Whose interests are being served and who gets exploited? Who suffers and who benefits from celebrity gossip?

3. Symbolic Interactionism

What does celebrity gossip mean to society as a whole? What does it mean to individual members of society? Can gossip have different meanings for different individuals or groups of individuals? How do those meanings get constructed in interaction? And how does celebrity gossip influence our everyday lives?

ASSIGNMENT: Select the material you will analyze, and answer each of the three sets of questions in a 3 PAGE ESSAY. Discuss the main principles of the three theoretical perspectives and explain how each can be applied. You will want to include specific examples from your chosen stories to illustrate your points. Did the theories overlap at all, or did they contradict each other? Was there any one theory you felt did a better or worse job of explaining celebrity gossip? Attach printouts of the stories to the paper.

You work for a consulting firm whose primary objective is to help businesses improve their strategic operations. Your firm recently was hired by a newspaper company named Hoosier Media Inc.
