Policy Agendas

There are challenges to agenda building that if not dealt with carefully and skillfully can adversely affect an issue or a proposal that you are trying to place in front of a decision maker. On the other hand, no matter how expertly you build an agenda for your issue or proposal, some issues are going to simply be avoided or not selected for consideration. Why is this so?

In this Small Group Discussion, you explore challenges surrounding policy agendas and the reasons why some proposals never make it to the decision maker.

Post your responses to the following questions presented for Small Group Discussion:

  • Many social issues do not receive the necessary attention from decision makers. Why might these issues be cast aside?
  • Some issues lack sufficient support to ensure that they are added to decision-makers’ agendas. Why might this be?
  • Some issues receive significant attention from decision makers. Why might these issues easily find their way onto decision makers’ agendas?

Discuss improvements needed to enhance the design, navigation, clarity, etc. Give clear rationale for both your praise and criticism.

Analyze two (2) websites for the implementation of the C.R.A.P. design principles.

1. Access the sites via the “Sites for C.R.A.P. Analysis Part 2” link in Canvas. Choose any two sites to analyze.  Choose by major if you wish. You may also choose other sites within your field if you wish. Discuss sites separately.

2. Analyze/evaluate the sites for the deficiency, good use, and/or misappropriation of the principles.

3. Thoroughly discuss the application of each principle—discussing each principle separately (i.e., four separate paragraphs using the principle names as headings).

4. Discuss improvements needed to enhance the design, navigation, clarity, etc. Give clear rationale for both your praise and criticism.

5. Be sure to IDENTIFY the sites  you chose by copying and pasting a link.

Both Cunningham and Spaaj et al. suggest that racial minority athletes, regardless of their success on the field or court, are often the victims of racial vilification by society. The three stories that were assigned to view demonstrate the magnitude of the problem. For this response, craft a 250-word essay that could serve as a short news story appearing in a public outlet (e.g., USA Today) that describes the magnitude of the problem. In your essay, be sure to include the following insights for your reader: a) Define the term racial vilification in your own words (using insights from Spaaj). b) Briefly outline THREE specific examples of the practice of the racial vilification of athletes from the stories you viewed during this module. c) Provide at least one direct quote from the LeBron James interview you viewed that outlines how these types of behaviors in sports reveals the level of racism that still exists in our society. d) Close your essay by providing your opinion of what can be done to address this issue. (10 points; 250 word minimum)

Astronomy

Bernard of Chartres is credited in the 12th century with saying that “we stand on the shoulders of giants.” Even for the seemingly-simple topic of constellations and mythology, this is true. For this generated not only interest and research about the heavens and the science of astronomy but stoked the imagination.

You will research the myths surrounding one of the less-known constellations. Do not include any of the Zodiacal constellations, or better-known constellations such as Orion, Ursa Major, and Canis Major. Many Southern hemisphere constellations provide great opportunities for less-known constellations.

Use a minimum of two (2) different references about your chosen constellation. Compose an original paper of 200 words about your chosen topic. List your references in a standard format. If you cut and paste a quote, provide the proper credit. Once completed, upload your overview above.

Multicultural Perspectives Presentation

No matter what your specific role in education, knowing how to incorporate multicultural perspectives into your practice effectively is an important skill—so important that it is one of the course competencies. This assignment is designed with the flexibility to allow you to tailor it to your specific professional context and goals. The KWL chart helped you locate your professional context in the general framework of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Now it would be helpful to review your KWL chart as well as the Definitions linked in Resources.

Suppose you have been asked to develop and conduct a presentation for orientation of new team members in your instructional setting. In the presentation, discuss multicultural issues and how they affect practice in your professional context. Also, provide strategies to meet the needs of multicultural learners in these areas.

Instructions

You will determine content for your presentation based on your area of professional practice or program specialization. To complete this assignment, use Kaltura Media to create a narrated PowerPoint presentation. In your presentation, you must include the following:

  1. A cover slide with your name, the course number, and the date.
  2. Content slides describing the effects of multicultural issues on your area of practice.
  3. Content slides with strategies for addressing multicultural issues that affect practice in your professional context. It will be most useful to focus on specific actions rather than on broad generalizations.
  4. A reference slide that documents the references you used to develop your presentation.

Additional Requirements

  • Each slide should follow the “7 by 7” rule for designing visual presentations: no more than seven lines per slide, no more than seven words per line.
  • Use short bullet points and expand on your content in the recorded narrative.
  • Limit your presentation length to seven minutes. The best way to do this is by using your narration to pace your presentation. Practice your narration off line until you can finish it in seven minutes or fewer.
  • Refer to the linked Resources as you develop your presentation.

Note: If you require the use of assistive technology or alternative communication methods to participate in this activity, please contact Disability Services to request accommodations.

Discuss the three streams Kingdon has identified where problems originate, and provide your opinion on which one most accurately reflects how and why policies come about.

Agenda building is often the first step in your policy practice tasks. Building a solid agenda may well determine the success of the development of a policy proposal and may also determine your success in placing an issue in front of a decision maker.

For this Assignment, you evaluate the accuracy of the Kingdon model of policymaking.

To prepare: Review Chapter 6 in your text, paying special attention to the section entitled “Three Challenges in Agenda Building.”

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper evaluating the accuracy of the Kingdon model in policymaking. Address the following:

  • Discuss the three streams Kingdon has identified where problems originate, and provide your opinion on which one most accurately reflects how and why policies come about.
  • Discuss the assertion that certain kinds of issues receive preferential treatment in problem solution and political streams.
  • Discuss tactics that policy practitioners use within each of the three streams to increase the odds that a specific issue will be placed on decision agendas.

Observations And Implications Of Recidivism

After reading Chapter 6 of the Mosher textbook, discuss how the process of measuring recidivism can impact the evaluation effectiveness of corrections policies.

After reading the article “The Revolving Door at the Prison Gate” by Padfield and Maruna, discuss any areas of research bias and any observed areas of less substantive research. Where did you find these elements. What were they?

What do you believe the purpose of the modern corporation should be, shareholder primary, a balanced stakeholder approach, or something else?

• Working With Children and Families: The Case of Elle (PDF)

Working With Children and Families:

The Case of Elle I received a referral for a 6-year-old Puerto Rican female named Elle. The referral came from a local pediatrician. Elle was referred because the pediatrician noted that Elle was showing symptoms of depression, including weight loss, disinterest in typical activities, and general lethargy. The parents, Mark (age 37) and Pamela (age 34), reported no recent changes in the home situation and had no explanation for Elle’s behavioral and emotional changes. As part of the initial assessment, I met with Elle’s parents. I asked about the current situation at home, their relationship, and changes that may have occurred recently. None were identified. As part of my assessment, I questioned each parent about the work that they did, their schedules, and any recent work changes. Elle’s father reported no significant changes; her mother noted her return tosecond-shift work. In my first meeting with Elle, I explained my role as a person who helped children with things that bothered them. I introduced Elle to our sand tray and invited her to “play” as we talked. Over the next two weeks, Elle built a sand castle and told me that a small child lived in one of the rooms. She circled the room again and again with a soldier on a white horse. When I asked what the soldier was doing, she simply shrugged her shoulders and continued to circle the castle. During our time together, as Elle began to use the soldier on horseback to circle the child, I asked her to show me how the soldier might help the child that lived in the castle. She showed the soldier riding away. I asked how the soldier riding away helped the child. At that point, Elle shut down and went to play with other toys in the play © 2019 Laureate Education, Inc. 2 therapy room. I did not intervene. Elle spent the rest of the time playing with a zoo, telling me that the bear was missing. In the sixth session, I asked Elle about the child in the castle. “Is the child safe?” I asked. “No way!” Elle exclaimed. I asked her to show me how to help the child. After several stops and starts, Elle brought a brown horse with a female rider. The rider said, “Climb on, I will take you away.” The child climbed on, and the horse took them to the other end of the playroom. When I asked Elle to tell me what the child said to the rider on the brown horse as they were riding away, she said, “It’s a secret.” I told Elle that when children tell hard secrets, my job was to work hard to keep children safe. With eyes wide-open, Elle asked if I could keep the child from the castle safe.
