My School And Its Culture (Two Page)

My School And Its Culture (Two Page)

As illustrated in the introduction discussion this week, each of you has experienced a unique journey through a variety of educational experiences throughout your lives. Naturally, some of these experiences will have contributed to your personal development and identity with greater impact than others. Furthermore, many in-school variables have affected your educational journey.

After reading selected materials from Week One, you should now be familiar with the research that describes the relationship between social class and school success (Chapter 7 and the Funds of Knowledge (http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/939) help by students and their families). You will use this knowledge as a foundation for completing this assignment.

For this assignment, describe a school-related experience that you believe influenced your identity either positively or negatively or both. You will analyze this experience and reflect on all the factors that might have shaped it, and the different ways these experiences shaped you. This analysis will include an examination of factors related to school (such as social class, socioeconomic status, diversity, family issues, etc.) that you believe influenced your schooling. This type of analysis provides a powerful introduction to learning more about the relationship between culture, education and how such factors can impact school.

In your paper, include the following:

  • Describe your selected school experience that influenced your personal identity development. (1 points)
  • Describe the school where your experience took place including (a) school characteristics, (b) student population characteristics, (c) socio-economic background of the families affiliated with the school, (d) the family structures represented, and (e) values, behaviors, and symbols that would be considered normal in that community (microculture). (2 points)
  • Explain the influence that your family’s “funds of knowledge” and social capital had on your ability to succeed in your school; address your success in the following three areas: academic success, social success, and emotional success. (1 points)
  • Explain, using specific examples, how educators could use information about culture and individual student identities to make effective instructional decisions. (1 points)

Unit 2 Assignment: General Motors’ Commitment To Diversity

Unit 2 Assignment: General Motors’ Commitment To Diversity

General Motors’ Commitment to Diversity

Read the vignette “General Motors’ Commitment to Diversity” at the end of Chapter 3. This vignette explores General Motors. Back in the 1980s, valuing diversity was far from the minds of the leadership at General Motors. True, GM had established a program to promote minority-owned dealerships, but there were problems within the company. Women and minorities complained to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that the carmaker was discriminating against them. In 1984, the EEOC and GM reached a $42.4 million settlement in which GM promised to promote women and minorities into management positions. Since then, the company has never swerved from that effort at inclusiveness. Today GM garners praise as a company that far exceeds legal standards for equal employment opportunity.

Directions

Read the vignette “General Motors’ Commitment to Diversity” at the end of Chapter 3. Imagine that you are a consultant to GM and have been asked to help them identify ways to avoid discrimination. Write a 500-word business memo to GM leadership answering the questions below. Follow the memo format in the Business Memo example provided here

. Note that APA style is NOT required for business memos.

  1. Of the activities and accomplishments described in this case, identify which activities General Motors needs to do in order to meet legal requirements and which go beyond legal requirements.
  2. Identify at least three ways General Motors can avoid illegal discrimination.

A Case Study in Scientific Revision

A Case Study in Scientific Revision

  1. Did Wegener reveal his theory of continental drift too soon? For the sake of scientific investigation, how is revealing an explanation for a process early both risky and sometimes necessary?

I do not believe he revealed it too soon. He did so when he had the opportunity to work on his theory after having been in convalescent for some time.  By revealing it when he did, Wegener was able to drum up enough interest and resources to prove his theory of continental drift.

Three Strikes Laws

Law enforcement agencies have started to term the three strikes as inappropriate law that has failed to deliver as promised. The failure of this law can be understood from the example, that this law has posed life term punishment as obligatory without examining the criminals that were punished for particular crimes (Fitzpatrick, 2003).
