DISCUSSION 2

"Classical Music; Early Abolitionist Art and Literature" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:

  •  Listen  to one (1) composition (for a symphony) by Haydn or Mozart, either at  the Websites below or in this week's Music Folder. Identify the work  that you have chosen, and describe the way in which the composition  expresses the specific qualities of the Classical music style. Use the  key terms from the textbook that are related to that particular music  style, and explain what you like or admire about the work. Compare it to  a specific modern musical work for which you might use the term  "classic" or "classical".

  • Explain whether you think an  autobiographical or fictional account by a slave (such as Phillis  Wheatley and Olaudah Equiano) is more persuasive than a biographical or  fictional account by a white author (such as John Gabriel Stedman or  Aphra Behn). Explain whether you believe the representations of slavery  in the visual arts (such as William Blake’s illustrations, William  Hackwood’s cameo, or John Singleton Copley’s painting) were more  compelling and convincing of the injustices of slavery than the literary  representations already mentioned. In your explanations, use specific  examples and consider both audience and the content and nature of the  work. Identify the literary or art form in modern times that you think  is most effective at depicting injustice.

Interpersonal Relationships Project

Interpersonal Relationships Project

There are six well defined stages in interpersonal relationships, including:

Contact: the initial stage of the relationship that includes a perceptual stage where the individuals simply become aware of each other, and an interactional stage that includes the exchange of basic information and where each individual decides if a relationship is worth pursuing.

Involvement: increased contact which allows the individuals to learn more about each other, a sense of being connected begins to develop and the individuals begin to spend more time together doing things that suggest an intensification of the relationship.

Intimacy: Each individual feels a sense of commitment to the other and some type of defined relationship, usually divided into two stages—the interpersonal commitment which is a private commitment and the social bonding which is more public. Both individuals identify individually as part of a unit or pair, and the public also identifies them as such.

Deterioration: the weakening of the bonds of intimacy due to dissatisfaction that ultimately leads to withdrawal from contact, decreasing self-disclosure and increased deception. This stage may or may not include arguing and quarreling.

Repair: one or both individuals make attempts to analyze what is wrong and try to find ways to solve the problems by changing own behaviors or changing the expectations of the other’s behaviors. The goal of this stage is a return to the intimacy stage. This stage may be skipped.

Dissolution: completely severing the bonds that held the relationship together in the intimacy stage.

Watch the 2006 movie "The Break-up" (with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn)  Watch for signs and examples of the six stages of a relationship.  Keep in mind that the initial stages may be represented in incidents from the past that are being remembered or retold by the characters.

Write a short, 1 1/2 to 2 page, double spaced essay addressing all six of the stages of interpersonal relationships.

Remember that although the above components are being demonstrated and studied with a romantic relationship in this particular move, the same processes occur in other types of relationships (friendships, work relationships, etc.) as well.

Non-verbal Messages Project

Non-verbal Messages Project

After viewing the 1982 version of "Victor Victoria" (with Julie Andrews and James Garner) write a two page, double spaced essay on the various types of non-verbal cues used by to establish and enhance the gender of the characters they portray. Keep in mind that in such gender based cues may include subtle messages to make males seem more masculine and females more feminine; and in this particular movie they may also be used to make a male seem more feminine and a female seem more masculine. Also remember that the director of the movie, rather than a particular character, may provide such cues, for example a cue provided by the set up of the scene itself.

Non-verbal cues can include gestures, facial expressions, body movements, body appearance, eye contact, the use of space, colors, touch, even the use of silence.

Identify at least ten specific examples of gender-based non-verbal messages. Explain how the sender meant for them to be interpreted and how the receiver interpreted them. If there is a discrepancy, explain why this seems to have occurred.

Budgeting Processes

Discussion 1

Explain the meaning of the term 'argument' in logic. How does it differ from the second meaning of the term that we commonly use? (Don't forget to provide your references! Make sure to carefully watch the videos and to refer to them!)

· Use the Internet to search for an example of an argument in the media, or present an argument you encountered in your daily life. Explain the example: what are the argument's two parts? Is it a good argument? How can you assess it?

In your replies to classmates, discuss the classmate's argument: is the argument well formulated? What should be changed? How can the argument be assessed?
