History – World history

The core assignment of this course is a documented research paper (1500-2000 words in length = approx. 6 – 8 pages double spaced, 12-point font).

  • The essay should support a thesis statement with information gained from research or investigation.
  • The paper will not be just a report presenting information, but will be an essay that carefully examines and presents your own historical interpretation of the topic you have chosen and your interpretation of the information you have gathered.
  • The paper may include consideration of problems and solutions, define key terms, or refute arguments against your thesis statement.

It will be important to choose a topic of interest to you.

  • Approach this assignment with an open and skeptical mind, then form an opinion based on what you have discovered.
  • You must suspend belief while you are investigating and let the discoveries shape your opinion. (This is a thesis-finding approach.)
  • Once you have found your thesis, write the paper to support it.

You will use some of the following critical thinking skills in this process:

  1. Choosing an appropriate topic, limiting the topic
  2. Gathering information, summarizing sources
  3. Analyzing and evaluating sources
  4. Defining key terms
  5. Synthesizing information, comparing and contrasting sources
  6. Testing a thesis, making an historical argument, using refutation
  7. Amassing support for a position
  8. Documenting sources

Because this may be a longer essay than you have written before and a complex process is involved, it is recommended that you complete this paper using the following steps:

  1. Choose a topic related to U.S. History after 1877 (Chapters 16-28) that you would truly like to explore and that you are willing to spend some time on. Your chosen topic should be focused. Pose a question that you really want to answer. You may want to begin with more than one topic in mind.
  2. Do some preliminary reading on the topic(s). You may begin with the textbook, then further explore the information available. Refine your topic. Summarize your topic, your interest in the topic, the questions you want to answer, and a hypothesis you want to test.
  3. Gather information from a variety of sources. Use a minimum of four sources for your paper, and at least one must be a primary source.
    • Examples of primary sources are ones that are used in our discussion forums 2 – 8.
    • They are sources that are contemporary to the times under investigation.
    • An example of a secondary source is our textbook, though the textbook also contains excerpts of primary sources, which you may use as a source in your essay.
  4. Outline the results of your research and then plan for your essay (note you are not required to submit the outline).
  5. Write the final draft and be sure to include a Works Cited List

The Philosophy Of History

Background:  In The Philosophy of History (1837), Georg Hegel, an influential German  philosopher, stated: “At this point we leave Africa, not to mention it  again. For it is no historical part of the World; it has no movement or  development to exhibit . . . . What we properly understand by Africa, is  the Unhistorical, Undeveloped Spirit, still involved in the conditions  of mere nature, and which had to be presented here only as on the  threshold of the World's History.” More than one hundred years later,  the British professor, Hugh Trevor-Roper, echoed Hegel’s assertions in  his book, The Rise of Christian Europe: “Perhaps in the future there  will be some African history to teach. But at the present there is none;  there is only the history of Europeans in Africa. The rest is darkness,  and darkness is not the subject of history” (1964).

Assignment: Write an essay in which you critically reflect and respond  to Hegel’s and Trevor-Roper’s comments above about Africa. Your essay  should be 4-5 pages, typed and doubled spaced and must conform to the  current edition edition of the APA (Publication Manual of the American  Psychological Association) and submitted through Safeassign as a  Microsoft Word attachment (PDF or other file types will not be graded).

Instructions: Your essay must include the following components:
1.An introductory paragraph that provides a critical overview of Hegel’s  and Trevor-Roper’s statements. The overview must place the statements  within the historical context of the widespread myths and stereotypes of  Africa held in the Western world.
2.A body of the essay that includes several paragraphs. In this section,  you will identify and select two or three areas—political, economic,  social-cultural institutions/practices (education, family, religion,  etc). Then, critically evaluate and discuss how the areas functioned in  pre-colonial Africa and the changes and exchanges that transpired in  those areas during the colonial and post-colonial periods.
3.Your concluding paragraph should summarize your ideas about this  topic. It should examine to what extent the new knowledge of Africa  obtained from AFA 201 has reinforced or debunked the widespread myths  and stereotypes of Africa held in the Western world such as the one  embraced by Hegel and Trevor-Roper.
4.The question tests your understanding of the entire course content for  AFA 201. Your essay will need to include references to at least five  articles discussed in class during the semester. You may include  additional materials from other sources (articles/books/videos relevant  to our course). But, the five cited materials from your course are a  minimum. Your references need to be well integrated into your essay.
5.Your essay must be clearly written, using correct grammar and  spelling. It is expected that you will approach the writing of this  essay seriously. The current edition of the Publication Manual of the  American Psychological Association (APA) will be the required reference  for the writing and citation guidelines for this essay. Please contact  your instructor if you have questions.

World History (Post WW2 Era) Final

Has globalization been good or bad for the post 1945 (and you may want to begin in the 1980’s) world?  It would probably be better to discuss only briefly the general pros and cons, and then focus on a few selected areas or countries as examples of your thesis.

The essay will be 5 pages, answering the question above. It will be MLA format, double spaced. No plagiarism please because this is a take-home final. Be careful with the word choice because I'm an international student.

Management In Dynamic Environment Submission1

Mike, one of the marketing strategists on your team, stops at your office door wanting to talk. “We use fabrics that are made domestically; however, there are issues with using these same fabrics globally. There are laws and regulations that prevent us from shipping these fabrics to other countries. This is a huge concern. One of our primary selling points is the consistency of quality of our product.”

You confirm Mike’s concern, “That’s an excellent point,” you say. “Now you’ve just given yourself and our team more work for the presentation. I’m sure that will come up. One of the board members used to run a textile plant in China.”

Mike nods his head in agreement. “I imagine textiles will not be the only resource concern,” he says.

Consider the following in your response:

  • Why should resources be a concern in a global strategy?
  • What resources may be a concern in the country you selected?
  • How will this impact the decision to move to the country that you selected?
  • How will this impact your competitive strategy in your global market?
