Why is the maintenance of homeostasis especially important during development of new humans within the bodies of their mothers?

Homeostasis Essay

Assignment 2: Homeostasis

Post your assignment to the Submissions Area for grading by the instructor by the due date assigned. The minimum length for this assignment is 1,500 words. Be sure to check your Turnitin report for your post and to make corrections before the deadline of 11:59 pm Mountain Time of the due date to avoid lack of originality problems in your work.

The maintenance of homeostasis is of major importance to all organ systems in the body and the overall survival of the individual. Explain how homeostasis is the maintenance of a dynamic range of environmental qualities rather than holding the internal environment at a set point. What would be wrong with a set point (say for body temperature) rather than a working range of temperatures?

The endocrine system is closely tied to homeostasis functioning. Give two examples of hormones (including their glands of origin and action) that play major roles in homeostatic processes in the body. What happens if these hormones are disrupted in their actions?

Also, look at how we adapt to survival in the outside world. Discuss how maintaining homeostasis gives us greater freedom of activity from dependence upon changes in the external environment. What happens during extremes that force our bodies out of homeostatic bounds? Give specific examples.

Why is the maintenance of homeostasis especially important during development of new humans within the bodies of their mothers? What can go wrong if specific homeostatic functions are disrupted?

Post a brief description of a technology (e.g., cell phone, Internet site, app) that might be valuable to a human services professional in your area of interest or practice.

Human services professionals use technology for everything from finding resources to keeping in contact with clients and staying current by monitoring the human services environment. With the variety of technologies available, and with new ones constantly emerging, keeping up with the latest innovations can be challenging. Professionals are tasked with finding—and, in some cases—learning to use the technologies that are most beneficial to their area of practice.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief description of a technology (e.g., cell phone, Internet site, app) that might be valuable to a human services professional in your area of interest or practice. Using specific examples, explain how professionals might use the technology and how it may benefit their particular practice.

Should a city be able to annex an adjacent area without the consent of the residents in that area?

Assignment 1

Property ownership is considered to be one of the pinnacles of one’s life.  For this assignment, we are going to look at property ownership through a several different lenses: individual home/land ownership, the greater “good” within localities, potential city progress, as well as the overall health of the state economy.  Read the following articles and watch the video within the first article as well.  I am also including some pros and cons underneath the links.  After you have read, watched, and conducted any other research you felt necessary, answer the following questions:

https://www.wfaa.com/article/mobile/news/local/collin-county/public-battle-rages-over-north-texas-couples-right-to-build-on-their-property/444206026

https://www.ci.boerne.tx.us/1305/Annexation-and-ETJ

Pros:

  • Economic viability of the state depends on cities expanding
  • Residents of ETJ work/enjoy benefits of the city–they should pay taxes
  • When a city encroaches on nearby areas, events such as fires, loose dogs affect the city.
  • They should be able to control these issues.
  • Businesses in the ETJ typically pay less in taxes than those in the city.
  • Levels playing field.Being annexed can help with water, waste disposal, etc. that could be problem in rural areas.

Cons:

  • Business interests should not be the state’s priority.
  • Rural farmland should not be gobbled up by nearby cities.
  • Residents outside the city choose this life. They should not be forced to be city residents against their will.
  • Being annexed will increase taxes. They should have a say in this.
  • Residents of the ETJ may have allegiances to their area and may not be good citizens on the city.
  • Being annexed changes how people can use their land.
  • Zoning issues many ensue.
  • It may be a long time before the city provides services, but will be paying taxes.  Is this fair?

QUESTIONS:

  1. Should a city be able to annex an adjacent area without the consent of the residents in that area?
  2. What power should the local governments have with regards to annexation with and without consent?
  3. Should the state government take steps to protect the rights of home/landowners from this?  Why or why not?
  4. How does potential future development impact this issue?  Should this, like the issue in the video, be such a roadblock for landowners?
  5. Lastly, which do you consider more compelling: the pros or the cons?  Why?

This assignment must follow MLA guidelines, be typed in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and be a minimum of 1000 words with a works cited page.  The works cited are not included in the minimum word count. Any sources provided in the assignment prompt MUST be used within your paper and cited in your works cited.  Other sources used must be cited as well.

assignment 3

For this assignment, we are going to learn more about the topic of fracking, the oil and gas interest groups as well as some of the environmental concerns surrounding this industry.  Start by reading p. 429–Federalism in Action: Fracking.  Once you’ve read this, read the following articles, and conduct any other research to be able to properly answer the questions below.

https://www.realclearenergy.org/articles/2019/05/17/congress_look_at_texas_for_the_facts_on_fracking.html

http://www.jsg.utexas.edu/news/2018/11/where-water-goes-after-fracking-is-tied-to-earthquake-risk/

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/what-happened-denton-war-local-democracy-n620926

https://stateimpact.npr.org/texas/2013/06/13/why-oil-and-gas-lobbyists-were-big-spenders-this-session/  (dated, but relates to the Denton-TX Legislature article)

Once you’ve fully read and researched, answer the following questions:

  • Is the federal government’s approach regarding fracking-related pollution an “overreach” of its powers?
  • Should there be tighter regulations on fracking? Why or why not?
  • Should local governments be allowed to adopt laws designed to protect air and water quality?
    • For example, explain what happened in Denton and why the Texas Legislature was able to override their collective vote to stop fracking in their area? Should the state government be able to override voters in local communties?
  • Based on the articles:
    • Why is the U.S. Congress looking at Texas as an example?
    • What potential environmental concerns are there with regards to fracking?
    • Is there any potential tie between the oil and gas industries and the increase in fracking in Texas?
    • How is the U.S. and Texas economy linked to fracking?
  • Overall, what are your feelings on the topic of fracking?  Do the positives outweigh the negatives?

This assignment must follow MLA guidelines, be typed in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and be a minimum of 1000 words with a works cited page.  The works cited are not included in the minimum word count. Identify 3 relevant research articles that address these same concepts.

Understanding the relationship between concepts, how researchers define variables, how a hypothesis is developed, how variables are measures, etc. is all part of the research process. This assignment requires you to apply these ideas and concepts to real work research questions. Simple research questions will be handed out in class.

TOPIC: Relationship between exercise habits and self esteem.

Minimum 2 pages

3 References

Discuss the following in your write-up:

1) Identify 3 relevant research articles that address these same concepts.

2) Review this previous scientific literature and briefly summarize.

3) Design a correlational study to investigate the relationship between these two variables. What is your hypothesis? How will you operationally define and measure the two variables?

4) How will you obtain your sample of participants?

5) Assume your study shows a correlation between these two variables, what are at least three possible causal explanations for this relationship?

6) Can you design an experimental study to investigate the relationship between these variables? What is your hypothesis? What type of hypotheses does the experimental method allow you to text that correlational method does not?

7) What is your independent variable? What is your dependent variable?

8) How will you make sure that your study has high internal validity? Will you use random assignment to conditions? 9) Do any ethical concerns about the treatment of participants emerge from your experimental design?

PLEASE DO IT IN THIS FORMAT

  • 1 Opening (topic)
  • 2 Research Question (which IV and DV)
  • 3 Literature Review (3 peer-reviewed articles)
  • 4 Hypothesis (think about IVs and DVs, possibly mediating variables and confounders).
  • 5 Methods
  • 6 Data Collection, sampling
  • 7 Ethical concerns.
  • 8 Expected results: correlations and 3 Possible explanations

Watch the two (2) videos and reflect on how the Sixth and Eighth Amendment protections were or can be preserved in each of the videos.

Diversity and Commonality

Attacks on our national infrastructure are already happening. And the expectation is that they will continue to increase at an accelerated rate. For this week’s discussion, we’ll cover threats to our nation’s pipelines. To get started, read this article:

https://www.eenews.net/stories/1060054924

After reading the article, start a discussion thread and discuss how the types of threats discussed in the article could impact our economy, and how implementing Diversity and Commonality (as discussed in chapters 4 and 5) could help mitigate these threats.

You must do this following:

1) Create a new thread. As indicated above, discuss how the types of threats discussed in the article referenced above could impact our economy, and how implementing Diversity and Commonality (as discussed in chapters 4 and 5) could help mitigate these threats.

2) Select AT LEAST 2 other students’ threads and post substantive comments on those threads. Your comments should extend the conversation started with the thread.

ALL original posts and comments must be substantive. (I’m looking for about a paragraph – not just “I agree.”)

Responses to Other Students: Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with at least a 100-word reply about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening. To help you with your discussion, please consider the following questions:

What did you learn from your classmate’s posting?

What additional questions do you have after reading the posting?

What clarification do you need regarding the posting?

What differences or similarities do you see between your posting and other classmates’ postings
