Changes in social stereotypes have improved the way that most people  view the LGBTQ community. A few things factor into this, I believe. One  is the gradual agnosticism that is taking over the country as well as  mass public acceptance of alternative lifestyles culturally. The way  homosexuals have were treated throughout history was horrifying. in 1533  in England, homosexuality was a crime punishable by hanging (Pickett,  2009)  even today in countries like Afghanistan and other middle east  nations where Sharia Law is followed, homosexuality is punishable by  death. Even Angela Mason argues that homosexuals have been “The most  sexually stigmatized group within society (Vernon, 2010).”

Only within most of our lifetime have we seen drastic changes happen  in the LGBTQ community. With the public acceptance of homosexuality, we  are now able to study and explore the culture at a macro level.  Friendships that developed between homosexuals tend to have a stronger  bond. Andrew Sullivan describes the types of friendship shared by two  homosexuals as not centered around shared interests, but rather the  alliance and shared experience between the two in a world where  homosexuality is often considered a taboo (Vernon, 2010). We can look to  the modern homosexual friendship as a blueprint of what a bond can be  at its highest level. Not many things can bring people closer than the  feeling of being hated by society and not allowed to express yourself  without the fear of public humiliation or worse the fear of death.  Philosopher Michel Foucault, A leading figure on postmodern thought,  wrote that even psychologists in the late 1950s tried to mask  homosexuality as a form of pathology. Foucault strongly influenced queer  theory and was at the forefront of the early days of equal rights for  homosexuals (Pickett, 2009).

The difference between what I consider to be typical inside a  friendship and what my grandfather thought to be normal is as different  as day and night. My grandfather, being a WWII Veteran and a former  leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had different  views on friendship than me. He had a few close friends that he knew  almost nothing about besides their favorite baseball teams and what they  bring to the table when fixing a classic car. I would imagine their  only interactions being a stern handshake and conversations about who  they think will win a sporting event of some sort. His friendships are  vastly different than my close male friends and me. We know everything  about each other. We often greet each other with a warm hug and often  talk about personal things. The taboo that would have been in my  grandfathers’ mind when interacting with other men has slowly gone away  because the acceptance of homosexuals in our community has also allowed  non-homosexuals to connect deeper than before.

How will you explain to the volunteers the most effective methods for reconciling traumatized survivors?

Assignment Details

You are the victim relief coordinator for a major volunteer organization located on the west coast of the United States. A catastrophic 8.7-magnitude earthquake has just struck the state of California, with the epicenter located somewhere near San Jose. The damage is severe, the number of casualties is unknown, and local emergency operations have already commenced. The volunteers associated with your organization have all undergone the typical training sessions required for volunteer work, but you want to give them a review of what they are about to encounter and how to effectively handle the situation both mentally and emotionally.

Assignment Guidelines

  • Address the following in your main post:
    • In your own words, explain the concept of behavior potentials to the volunteers.
      • Psychologically speaking, what are behavior potentials?
      • What types of personalities do you think have the greatest potential to become overwhelmed by trauma and stress? Provide 2–3 examples and briefly describe them.
    • How will you explain to the volunteers the most effective methods for reconciling traumatized survivors? Explain.
      • What do you think are the best methods to treat victims of shock or extreme trauma? Explain in detail.
    • What must be taken into consideration regarding potential psychological trauma experienced by the volunteer response and recovery units? Explain.
    • What significant challenges do you feel will be associated with the psychological treatment of both surviving victims of the earthquake and volunteers who experience emotional trauma? Explain.

What is your own perception of how the media fosters unhealthy models of friendship through film and television?

We learn about the unhealthy and shallow depiction of “soul friendships” in mainstream films and literature:

“Type  soulfriends, or even worse “soulmate” into an internet search engine  and some of the most syrupy aphorisms on friendship will be returned for  your edification… the trouble with this sentimental haze and  commodification is that it cheapens an idea of enormous human value: the  spirituality of friendship is not something that can simply be ceded to  the market” (p. 222).

In this week’s reading material, the  following philosophers discuss their views on this topic: Saint  Augustine, Aristotle, Plato, Kierkegaard, Kant and Thomas of Aquinas.  Make sure to incorporate their views as you answer each discussion  question. Think about how their views may be similar or different from  your own. In at least 350 words total, please answer each of the  following, drawing upon your reading materials and your personal  insight. Please be sure that you do not provide names of people or  identifying characteristics of the workplace.

  • What is your own perception of how the media fosters unhealthy  models of friendship through film and television? Please provide an  example from either a book or a film. What is our ethical responsibility  in terms of challenging and questioning these mainstream notions of  friendship?

Governing The Tragedy Of The Global Commons

Climate change is a global problem with many actors responsible for  the climate dilemma from energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The  climate’s energy balance is a global public good that no one political  actor is accountable to preserve, yet all require it. The “tragedy of  the commons” is a central concept in international relations and is  relevant to energy use and climate change. It is difficult to get  agreement on limiting or ending the use of energy which is necessary to  the economy in order to preserve balance in some environmental system.  It has happened in the past, as with the Montreal Protocol limiting  chlorofluorocarbons’ damage to the ozone layer, but climate change  affects many more actors and the self-interest of many powerful  entities.

As you consider these aspects of climate governance,  evaluate the questions below using as much information as you can  marshal to make your evaluation.

  • How successful have international agreements on limiting greenhouse gases been in general (e.g.,  why was the Montreal Protocol of 1987 a success, whereas the ability to  cap global greenhouse gas emissions by binding treaty has met with less  success?)?
  • International relations theory speaks to the difficulties of  foregoing self-interest for the common good, implying there are elements  of tragedy in preserving public good. In your view, is the current  state of international agreement on limiting greenhouse gas emissions  tragic? Of the optimistic solutions put forward by Michael Bradshaw, Tim  Wirth, Tom Daschle, and David Victor, which do you find most likely to  succeed?

Race, Ethnicity, Class, and Gender in Current Events

Choose a current event that is making national or international headlines. It might be a story about an election, a natural disaster, the global economy, a highly publicized criminal trial, or an event in the entertainment industry.

Then, analyze how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender intersect and impact the event itself, the coverage of the event, and the event’s results. For example, if you decide to look at mass shootings in the United States, you will discuss who the shooters are (race, ethnicity, class, gender) and how the media portrays them (race, ethnicity, class, gender) as well as the victims (race, ethnicity, class, gender), etc. How old are the perpetrators and the victims?
