Analysis of Psychopathology in Popular Film

Final Paper

I am providing the students with two options for their paper. First option is Analysis of Psychopathology in Popular Film, and the second, is Analysis of Psychopathology in a piece of literary work. Both, Literature and Popular media and films are a rich source of material addressing psychopathology and mental illness. You will be asked to view a relevant film or read a work of Literature. Then, I would like students to write a paper that addresses a number of relevant themes including the following:

1. A comprehensive description of psychopathology (symptoms) or particular Psychopathological dynamics (Oedipus complex, Existential Angst) depicted, including a formal DSM/ICD diagnosis of the protagonist or main character. This should include specific and relevant symptoms and biographical information that indicates how the person displays these dynamics or meets criteria for a particular mental disorder.

2. Identify a minimum of 3 SCENES either in the film or story that best the above points.

3. A reflection on the positive and negative messages that the film or story portray regarding the particular disorder or psychological dynamics.

4. Discussion of how well or poorly the movie or Literary work characterizes the particular form(s) of psychopathology depicted.

You will choose the movie or literary work you want to write the paper on, please don’t flood my inbox with questions regarding what movie or book to choose.. For film suggestions, please refer to the "Psychology and Films Links" section below in the syllabus, but you can use ANY film with a psychopathological content.  For literary works, there are plenty of choices, both classical and modern, and you may want to do a web-search for specifics. A very short list of authors I do like are as follows: Sophocles, St Augustine, Avicenna, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Goethe, some of the Russian novelists are great (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekov), Robert Louis Stevenson, American novelists (Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, etc), many mystery novels from Agatha Christy or Arthur Conan Doyle, and many others. You may also choose a biography in lieu of a novel, but you need to check with me on that one.

The paper should be written using APA format ONLY, and it should be minimum 2,500words long NOT counting title page and bibliography. The paper has to have a title page, followed by an Abstract in which summarizes the main idea of your paper. Then you should have an introduction followed by the main body of your paper where you cover numbers 1-4 above each section subtitled. Finally a Conclusion and a Bibliography. Therefore your paper outline should be as follows:

. Title Page

. Abstract

. Introduction

. Description of Psychopathology

. Description of 3 scenes.

. Characterization

. Positive and Negative messages

. Conclusion

. Bibliography

Fever-Tree PLC is considered the global leader of the premium mixer drinks category, with more than 200 million bottles and 27 million cans sold. The company was established in the UK in 2005 and now operates in over 50 countries, generating more than 50% of revenues from outside UK.

The company spotted a niche in the premium mixer category; using ingredients of the highest quality, taste, attractive packaging and a compelling story. The two founders, Charles Rolls and Tim Warrillow toured the world in search of the best products for their premium soft drinks, finding high quality suppliers of products like quinine, ginger, lemons, elderflower and thyme.

The market for premium mixers has grown strongly in recent years. The task of this assignment is to forecast future sales growth for the company for the next three years and also to estimate a medium and long term sales growth forecast.

1) Students will work in Groups of 5. As a group, students will define Fever Tree’s market and understand the routes to market. (300 words)

2) Each student will work individually, selecting one of Porter’s Five Forces and describing the forces impact on Fever Tree’s market. (1,000 words each)

3) Each student based on the research of Porter’s five forces, global economic conditions and market trends will estimate the growth rates for the four regional divisions for three years, a mid term growth rate Year 4 – Year 8 and a long term growth rate. The fifth student will estimate the overall growth rates for Fever Tree PLC. Give reasons for your assumptions. (500 words)

4) Assuming a fixed Free Cash Flow margin of 17.8% for all periods calculate the Discounted Free Cashflow of Fever Tree. Students should assume a Cost of Capital of 4%. 4.5%, 5%, 5.5% or 6%, a Cash balance £35,000,750 and the 115,240,900 shares outstanding. Students should use the estimated growth rates for the group. How does the cost of Capital impact the share valuation? (200 words)

5) Each student should produce an individual share price performance chart including the share price of a competitor and the market performance. The chart should be indexed so that all lines have the same start point. The charts should be based on 3-months, 6-months, 1-Year, 2-Years or 3-years and should describe the relative share performance.

6) Conclusion – As a group compare the valuation in section 4 with the current share price based on the group growth rates and a cost of capital of 5.25% and determine whether to buy or sell Fever Tree shares. (500 words)

Capstone paper on the book ‘Jacob have I loved’

Capstone paper on the book ‘Jacob have I loved’. Between 6-10 pages with 4 sources.

Summary:

**The following is copied verbatim from the 6.0 Module. Make sure to read the original materials there since there are additional pages of suggestions. The link below should only be used when you are ready to submit your final draft of this paper. **

Capstone: Novel Critical Analysis Instructions

Read through this page and the following pages in this module to get a sense of what this project requires you to do. Please read all pages before asking questions. While we do want to answer any questions you may have, we want you to read through the materials first.

Instructions:

1. Select a critical approach for the focus of your paper from the next page of this module (labelled "Critical Approaches"). In some cases, they may be combined, so feel free to use one or two (no more than two). For instance, you might combine a historical reading with a biographical reading.

2. Complete the 6.1 assignment by the required due date. If you are unsure of the due date, review the course calendar on the main page. The 6.1 assignment is a bit like the abstract from APA, so this is an important way to get feedback from your instructor.

3. Submit the rough draft of your research paper to Smarthinking and/or Turn It In (as specified by your instructor) by the specified due date. You will then submit the feedback to the instructor via the 6.2 assignment. This is exactly like what you did with your papers in English 111.

4. Submit the final draft of your research paper by the specified due date. This should be handed in to the 6.3 link.

5. This paper should be in MLA format.

6. This paper should be at least six pages long. It should be no longer than 10 pages.

7. A works cited page should be included. This page is NOT part of your total. Thus, the minimum page count you will have is seven pages (6 written + 1 works cited = 7 pages). Again, the works cited page does *not* count as a page of text.

Sources:

1. Use at least four (4) sources other than the novel itself. These sources should be valid literary sources. If you use our SCC library databases, you can rest assured that the sources are valid.

2. Wikipedia, Pink Monkey, Cliff Notes, etc. are *not* considered valid, literary sources.

3. Films on Demand (from our library) is also a valid place of reference. Sources can be web-based or print, as long as you document accordingly.

4. Please use the OWL and the videos provided in this module to help you. You may also review the “How to write a thesis” video from the 3.0 materials.

This is the summary that I submitted for an earlier assignment.

Jacob have I loved takes place the summer of 1941 on Rass Island. Twin sisters Louise and Caroline live on the island with their family. Their dad runs and operates and crab boat. Louise has a love-hate relationship with Caroline. Caroline almost died at birth so she's always stealing the spotlight from Louise. Caroline and Louise have always wanted to get off Rass Island but haven't been able to. The only person Louise has is her best friend Call. Call's personality is kinda bland, he never laughs or cracks jokes with Louise, but they love hanging out and crabbing together. One day a mysterious man appeared in Rass and of course Call and Louise were curious. They became friends with the gentleman and refer to him as Captain. Caroline steals more spotlight from Louise when she too becomes friends with Captain, and Captain offers to pay for Caroline to go to a private music school off the island. Call gets the opportunity to join the Navy and fight in WWII. Now both Caroline and Call are gone and Louise is left behind to help her father work his crabbing boat business. Call returns home from the war in 1945 and announces he will marry Caroline. Louise is upset and finally sets her mind to getting off Rass island once and for all. Louise leaves the island and becomes a nurse midwife in a small town where she meets her future husband. While Louise was helping deliver twins one evening she experienced what it was like to have a sick baby that needed nursing back to good health. This opened eyes for Louise and she was able to forgive Caroline for always stealing her spotlight.

My critical approach for my paper will be the formalist. I believe this is the best option to help readers understand the story.

This was my professor's response.

Good plot summary. If you'd rather, you may use the thematic approach instead of formalistic. Here is an update on that approach:

*Thematic – the thematic approach focuses on themes/morals/meanings that come through the text as lessons for characters and/or readers. It would be appropriate to tell about the author in the introduction and concentrate each body paragraph on a unique theme. These body paragraphs will include plot details to prove each theme. Moreover, body paragraphs will be arranged in order by how their examples illustrate the plot. For example, Titanic's sinking as a theme of man's arrogance cannot be discussed before the theme of the haves versus the have-nots in regards to social class inequities.

English – Article writing

Choose one of the following questions to create an answer. Do not try to answer the questions within the question you choose one-by-one; instead, use your critical thinking/interpretation skills to create an essay structure with an opening paragraph, strong body in which you use close reading techniques to cite any passages (be brief here—use only what you need, and remain analytic about the brief passages you chose to support your own position), and a well-crafted conclusion. Avoid weak transitions like “in conclusion,” “because,” “as I wrote earlier,”etc. We can talk more about this in class if you want.

1. What stereotypes were called-up around the phenomena of the recent Las Vegas shootings; how did the media portray the individual who had carried out the shooting in relation to media portrayals of other incidents of mass violence (protests, police treatment of different ethnicities, etc.)? How could ideas that emerge around acts of mass violence make non-violent journeys ethnically and / or racially-inflected? Finally, what might the telling of "stories" of heroism be written in Beowulf tell us about current versions of hero and anti-hero stories that are emerging in our own media-saturated times?

2. Based on the evidence in the Beowulf story, and in Chaucer's "Wife of Baths Tale," use close reading techniques to understand the role of women in the culture depicted in  Beowulf . Does this represent an empowerment of female power? What kind of power do females seem to have in the story? Or is this representation a culturally-specific silencing of women's stories? Or do the tropes of "women" in  Beowulf , and later in Chaucer's "Wife of Bath's Tale," signal something more universally produced-a set of figures adopted across cultures and times-for women's roles in society?
