Discussion 1: Mentoring and Peer Support

Discussion 1:
Mentoring and Peer Support

Adolescence is a time of trials and tribulations. Teens are dealing with the formation of self and identifying who they are in the world. They are also experiencing biological changes that create mood swings and at times emotional outbursts. Interventions for this group can be challenging, as adolescents often avoid asking for assistance. This avoidance is due to their desire to look normal and fit in. As a result, peer group and mentoring programs appear to be the most beneficial in helping adolescents. These settings offer the support teens need along with the validation that they are not alone in their struggles. Some of the main concerns for adolescents are depression, suicide, self-esteem, and self-confidence.

· Post an Internet-based intervention used with adolescents and locate an article on the use of mentoring or peer support programs for adolescents.

· Describe the intervention and the underlying theory.

· Identify the target behaviors that this intervention is used to address. Assess the intervention and then compare and contrast these interventions.

· Finally, describe the strengths and weaknesses of each intervention.

Assignment 2: LASA 1—Analysis of Historical, Legal, and Ethical Issues

Assignment 2: LASA 1—Analysis of Historical, Legal, and Ethical Issues

As someone knowledgeable about research on children with exceptionalities, you have been given the task of presenting a report to the court on your arguments for and against people with intellectual disabilities raising children.

Do the following:

  • Launch the online library (under Academic Resources).
  • Select Find Videos.
  • Select Filmakers Library Online.
  • In the search box, type “is love enough” and click Go.
  • The first result should be Is Love Enough? directed by Tom Puchniak. Review this video.

Analyze the historical, legal, and ethical issues in the video. Make sure you include the following in your analysis (in an order that flows well in your paper):

  • Compare the historical trends related to people with disabilities. How would outcomes be different fifty years ago for the people in the movie?
    • Compare the differences from about ten years ago when the movie was produced to today.
    • Explain how far we have come and what still needs to be addressed (such as terminology, acceptance, and support).
  • Explain how laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the IDEA influence these decisions.
  • Identify the ethical principles that might apply to the situation. Consider the professional ethics codes, including the following:
  • Synthesize your research and create two arguments: one for and one against parents with intellectual disabilities raising children. Consider the perspectives of the parents as well as the children. Use evidence and examples from research, utilizing your assigned readings, and at least two peer-reviewed articles on this topic to support your argument.
  • Given what you learned in the video, your assigned readings, and research you found, recommend supports or interventions for the following:
    • The family
    • Within the community for the family and child
    • The school
  • Although this video focused on those with intellectual disabilities, generalize the issues to other exceptionalities.
  • Conclude your paper with a review of current thinking for and against people with exceptionalities raising children, based on the sources used.

Write a 8–9-page paper (not counting the title page, abstract, or reference page) in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to include a title page, abstract, and reference page also in APA format.

Ethics And Social Justice

Ethics And Social Justice

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Taking Action

In this course, you have been introduced to ethics, social problems, and social policy. This assignment will prompt action from you to help resolve a social issue. You must learn about a problem, find a piece of legislation addressing your concern, and act to help solve the problem.

Using the textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, do the following:

1. Identify the Problem

Select and research a social issue based on the course readings or personal interest.

Then, address the following:

  • Define and describe the social issue in detail using a variety of relevant outside sources.
  • Explain the social context of the social issue.
  • Identify and describe ethical concerns related to the social issue.
  • Determine what population is most impacted by the social issue.

2. Find the Legislation

Use credible government sources to find and learn about a piece of legislation related to your chosen social problem or issue.

Then, address the following:

  • Explain how the piece of current legislation relates to the social problem or issue. Make sure you provide a description of the piece of legislation.

3. Write an Advocacy Letter

In order to help resolve the social issue, you must take action. Identify your elected representative(s) and find their contact and e-mail addresses.

Write an advocacy letter regarding the piece of legislation and your support of or opposition to it.

The purpose of an advocacy letter is to support or oppose the legislation that affects a social issue of concern to you. This letter is a way for representatives to stay in touch with the constituents they represent. The letter consists of a brief introduction identifying and addressing the social issue of concern (through personal experience, if applicable), an identification of the piece of current legislation that addresses your chosen issue, and your request advocating your representative to support or oppose the legislation.

Be sure to address the following in your letter:

  • Identify the purpose of your letter.
  • Identify House bill (HR) or Senate bill (S) number of the legislation.
  • Briefly summarize the social problem or issue.
  • Explain the importance of the legislation as it relates to your issue.
  • Advocate for or against the legislation in a knowledgeable and respectful tone. This includes the following:
    • Evaluating the proposed impact of the legislation on target population
    • Proposing possible ways the legislation can influence the social problem or issue

Download and review samples of advocacy letters. Use either of the sample letters as a template for your own letter.

Write a 4–5-page report in Word format that begins with an Advocacy Letter followed by a supporting report of 4–5-pages. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Week 9

Week 9

For this Discussion, you will examine the zone of proximal development (ZPD), scaffolding in learning situations, and the internalization of social speech.

To prepare

  • Review Chapter 9 of the Newman and Newman course text and consider the zone of proximal development (ZPD) in relation to teaching a new skill.
  • Select an individual you would like to teach a new technology and consider the age of the individual so it matches a particular developmental period: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, or late adulthood.

By Day 4

Identify the age of the individual you are helping and explain the preliminary steps you would use to help the individual get started with the new skill. Include how you would identify the zone of proximal development for the individual and how you would use scaffolding to provide developmentally appropriate support for the individual’s learning. Indicate whether internalization of social speech is likely to occur and why.

The Diverse Nature Of Psychology

Focus On Integrative And Collaborative Care

Focus On Integrative And Collaborative Care

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, be certain to have read all the required resources for this week.

The collaborative practice of clinicians across disciplines requires a shared language, appreciation of diagnostic and therapeutic paradigms, and recognition of appropriate roles within the health care team.  This collaborative environment is at the heart of a health care system that utilizes the skills and expertise of all its team members in appropriate and extended roles. This model of care delivery is often called integrated care (IC) or collaborative care (CC). Although this model is endorsed by many professional societies and agencies, the CC/IC care delivery model can fail due to multiple factors.

In your initial post, consider the clinical partnerships that result within the CC/IC delivery model. Integrating concepts developed from different content domains in psychology, address the following questions.

· How might health care teams achieve therapeutic goals for individual clients?

· How does this support health literacy?

· What factors might lead to the failure of the CC/IC delivery model?

· How might lack of acceptance of the value or viability of the CC/IC model by stakeholders, lack of awareness of the clinical competencies of various members of the team, barriers to financial reimbursement for services, and lack of integration of support services within the practice cause a breakdown in efficacy?

· What supportive interventions within the CC/IC model address such issues?

In addition, consider how successful health care models assume an understanding of each profession’s competencies and responsibilities. For example, primary care providers (PCPs) are sometimes unaware of the abilities and practice scope of psychology professionals.

· Identify methods of targeted intervention and education for PCPs that might alleviate potential issues for the CC/IC model.

· Explain how the APA Ethical Code of Conduct can be used to guide decisions in these complex situations.

· Evaluate and comment on the potential work settings where you might find the CC/IC model. In what ways might this model provide more job satisfaction?
