Unit 5: Module 5 – M5 Assignment 1 Assignment 1: LASA 2: Executive Presentation

The management team was so impressed with the report you submitted a couple of weeks ago, that they have asked you to prepare another report in the form of a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation which addresses additional questions they have about some of their products.

They would like to use this information at the next Board meeting so they have asked you to prepare a PowerPoint presentation using the information below. They want to make sure they have talking points available when they deliver the presentation so they have asked you to use the notes section of PowerPoint to clearly explain the information presented on each of the slides.

They would like for you to design a title slide which captures the audience’s attention, an introduction slide(s) which contains executive summary information, slides which support each of the four sections below including talking points, and a solid conclusion.

They have asked that you contain your presentation to approximately 15 slides. The management team may be asked to justify the information you present so it is imperative that you show your calculations. You may want to compute your calculations in Excel and copy that information into your PowerPoint.

PART 1: The following information is available for GFI’s maintenance cost over the last seven months. Use the high low method to estimate the fixed and variable components of its maintenance cost. Would this be an effective way to estimate these costs? Justify your answer by explaining why this is an effective way or why it is not.

PART 2: In 2001, Ms. Kelle, the head of aerobic equipment sales, started a fitness magazine called the Dancing Elephant. The magazine sells 50,000 copies a month. The total variable costs at that volume are $40,000 and fixed costs are $20,000. An additional storage cost of $2,000 will be incurred if production exceeds 55,000 units.

You have been asked to forecast the following costs for two possible production runs of (a) 52,000 units and (b) 57,000 units:

  • Total variable costs
  • Variable cost per unit
  • Total fixed cost
  • Fixed cost per unit

PART 3: GFI manufacturers ping pong tables and has a JIT policy that ending inventory must equal 10 percent of the next month’s sales. It is estimated that April’s actual ending inventory will consist of 40,000 ping pong tables. May and June sales are estimated to be 400,000 and 350,000 tables respectively. Compute the number of tables to be produced that would appear on GFI’s production budget for the month of May.

Good management includes good budgeting. Explain why the bottom-up approach to budgeting is considered a more successful management technique then a top down approach. Provide an example of implementation of the bottom-up approach to budgeting.

PART 4: Computer A has a book value of $1,500 and a current resale value of $800. The computer is needed to fulfill a client order, but if it's used on this project then its resale value will be zero. The project contract is valued at $5,000. $2,000 has already been spent on specialized software, which will be used on the project and which has no value for any other use. A printer costing $400 is needed for a separate project.

Comment on and determine the costs which are relevant to the decision regarding whether or not to commit to complete the project. Based upon the information at hand, determine whether this project is profitable. Show your calculations.

Environmental Health: Nightingale

Governments around the world regulate acceptable behaviors through rules developed for the best interest of the common good. These regulations range from taxes to military activities to environmental health. This week's Discussion requires you to consider the ideals of personal freedoms versus governmental regulation and assurance. You evaluate the benefits and demerits of both governmental regulation and privatization with regard to environmental health.

To prepare for this Discussion, read Chapters 9, 10, and 11 of the course text. Review the PowerPoint presentations in your Learning Resources. Review the required websites expanding your knowledge of air, food, water, and human health issues. Focus on the regulations regarding food-handling, indoor air quality, water privatization, and the responsibilities of the involved parties. Also, if you choose, review the optional resources, which have been chosen to highlight exciting public health topics.

Post a comprehensive response to one of the following questions. Discuss the potential human health effects associated with the topic/question you selected. Then explain your position and justify your viewpoint with support from the course text and at least two reputable organizations' websites. Identify the topic in the first line of your posting (for example, Air).

Questions:

  1. Water: Should private companies be allowed to pump water from water sources in order to produce bottled water that is sold for profit?
    1. If so, what would you require of them regarding the source water? Would you limit their profits?
    2. If not, how do you balance your decision with the rights of companies to participate in capitalism?
  2. Air: Does the government have the right to tell people they cannot smoke tobacco products in public? Explain your answer.

Food: A restaurant recently underwent a governmental food inspection and was found to have multiple food-handling issues that may cause illness. The government inspectors required that the issues be cleared within three months, or the restaurant would be closed. During those three months, 98 people became ill with Clostridium perfringens. The victims believe the government shares in the responsibility for their illness and have named the governmental inspectors in a lawsuit. Do you agree with the victims? To what extent are the inspectors, the government, the owners, and the victims responsible for the victims' illness?

Academic Honesty – Week 4

Academic honesty is an integral part of your learning experience. While plagiarism is the most common form of academic dishonesty, cheating or furnishing fabricated or false information are also acts of academic dishonesty, and those apply to research projects that you will be conducting during your graduate studies. Have you encountered instances of academic dishonesty? List different kinds of acts that you might encounter across the discipline and possible solutions.

Political Science- Milestone 2

This is based on the final project (milestone) you started in week 2.

For this assignment, you will summarize the current literature relevant to the issue you chose in Module Two. A literature review is an analytical essay containing an introduction (including a thesis and a research question), body (where you use research to support your issue and tie the resources back to your research question), and a conclusion. The purpose of a literature review is to summarize and synthesize the ideas of others in regard to your chosen issue. This will construct a solid foundation for your final paper, due in Module Nine.
