Unit VI Discussion Board Question

Top of Form

Go to the U.S. Census Bureau's home page at http://www.census.gov, and select a state not already discussed by a fellow student. Suppose a representative sample of this state was used to represent the current U.S. population. How well does this state represent the U.S. overall? If a researcher has limited funds, is this a good technique? Why, or why not? Please include the name of the person or question to which you are replying in the subject line. For example, "Tom's response to Susan's comment."

Disidentification Paper

5 page paper (prompt provided) USE MUNOZ'S "PERFORMING DISIDENTIFICATION" READING IN THE ESSAY TO TALK ABOUT

Resistance Paper: Artist Case Studies

Each of the readings from this unit outline a specific model of subversive resistance to established systems of power that can be observed in the practices of contemporary artists across genres. Though the readings all share an implied outcome—the subversion of dominant power—their strategies are each distinct. In this way, each can be understood as a methodology of resistance—a lens for identifying the sometimes hidden ways that those with less power can creatively undermine larger systems of power. Your assignment in this paper is to choose just one of these methods of resistance to use to analyze two specific works cultural works discussed in this unit.* In essence, the works you discuss become “case studies” that allow you to examine and discuss a specific mode of creative resistance.

This “case study” approach is common practice in critical writing in the social sciences and cultural studies where social, political, and economic theories are used as a method to explain the unrecognized structures and belief systems behind behaviors and events in the real world. Case studies can be formal and follow a scientific format of distinct sections titled Overview, Background, Method, Analysis, and Conclusion, or these elements can be more organically worked into to an essay or article. Either way, the process is similar: case studies apply a theoretical approach or method from an established source to a new site of the author’s choosing in order to, first, inform the reader about the chosen site; and, secondly and even more importantly, to introduce the reader to the theoretical methodology used in the analysis.

PICKING A LENS

Review your notes from the reading, lecture, and section discussion. Which text seemed the most interesting to you: the artist as trickster, artist as tactical consumer or poacher, or artist performing disidentitifcation? What are the strategies or characteristics the author identified as key to their resistance strategy. Now: apply it to your art object. REMEMBER: it isn't necessary that the art object you choose is an exemplar of the lens. If it doesn't seem like the lens applies, describe how it doesn't. What conclusions can you draw from the contrast?

Essay 4—Expository Research Essay

Essay 4—Expository Research Essay

Rationale: I want you to move outside of your comfort zone and research something unexpected. Through synchronicity and luck, a book will find you in the stacks, like a wand finds a wizard. It is your mission to decipher this text, to investigate its hallways, to uncover a hidden meaning, to support it with another source (using at least one other library resource), and to articulately and creatively present an argument based upon your discovery,

Assignment: We shall return to the dusty stacks on the second floor of the SCC library where you shall once again feel the spines of ancient tomes, fingering the rigid vertebrates, until a book calls to you, like a siren does a lonely ship at sea. Then you shall turn to page 111 and locate the 11th line. This will be the first line of your paper (if this page/line does not exist than choose numbers that are lucky to you). This text will serve as a jumping off point to inspire the topic and angle of your approach. Your subject and discussion are completely up to you. However, you must use the text a reference (including quotes and citations). You must also find at least one other source using the library resources (either another book or an online resource) to relate to this text and support your investigation. This will also appear in your citation. There are two parts to this assignment:

1) The Expository Essay – is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner. This can be accomplished through several different formats: comparison and contrast, definition, example, analysis of cause and effect, etc. The format is up to you. This must be in 3rd person perspective, most likely to an audience of your peers. 800-1000 words total for this first part.

2) The Endnotes – endnotes appear as referential numbers in the essay itself, which refer to the notes provided on a separate page at the end of the paper, like a Work Cited page. These endnotes will be written in first person and your audience will be me, your professor. These notes can include citations and commentary / explanation which refer to brief additional information that might be too digressive for the main text, such as reference to a certain idea, definition, allusion, metaphor, etc. Also, I would like for you to use these to address certain tactics/approaches you take in the paper and explain to me why you do so. You must provide at least 10 endnotes, and they must be at least 500 words total.

Getting Started: Today we will find our mysterious text and begin plotting its interpretation. Try to keep an open mind – don’t immediately despair if you find yourself face to face with something unfamiliar or tedious. Be creative and approach whatever you find with ingenuity and craftiness. If you are curious about a particular topic, be sure to discern which aisle of the stacks you want to explore. Once you locate your text, perform all the activities of pre-writing and brainstorming. List everything you think you know about this topic and consider multiple ways of perceiving it. Does it relate to a certain theme, to society, to another text? If it’s scientific can it be disproven or elaborated on? If it’s historical is it accurate and without bias? If it is literary does it have a significant theme relevant to contemporary society? Keep an open mind while simultaneously maintaining skepticism. You are a detective, an explorer, a treasure hunter. Watch out for misleading evidence, quick sand, and booby traps.

Writing: Keep in mind I do not want a summary of what you found. Repeat. I DON’T WANT A SUMMARY. Explore your discovered text. Research the topic. Investigate the idea. Evaluate the evidence. Set forth an interesting and compelling argument about that idea in a clear and concise manner. Basic Setup: Introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs with logical transitions, and a conclusion. Include an interesting title as well.

Perhaps it is helpful to think of an essay in terms of a conversation or debate with a classmate. For example, in a discussion about how written communication has regressed, such as from personal letters to text messages, we can deduce the result of that regression: that we are less proficient with language today, and this adversely affects our ability to communicate with one another. In this discussion there would be a beginning, middle, and end to the conversation. If you were to end the exposition in the middle of the second point, questions would arise. Therefore, the expository essay must be complete, and logically so, leaving no doubt as to its intent or argument.

Part One – Expository Essay – 3rd person perspective. This should be more formal, presenting your ideas to an intelligent audience, convincing them that your topic is important and worth reading about. This mean developing a compelling thesis statement (as usual) and supporting that thesis statement throughout the essay with examples and analysis. Use examples from the book, your additional resources, life, literature, and your own brilliant brain (just don’t say “I” “me” “my” “we” and so forth).

Part Two – Endnotes – 1st person perspective. This can be less formal, more conversational, discussing various aspects of the paper with me, such as your different techniques, any interesting allusions, weird definitions, whatever kind of aside you want to include.

Length, Format, and Evaluation: Essay 4 must be 800-1000 words (PLUS 500-600 words for the endnotes. So total = 1300-1600 words) in double-spaced Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Please adjust your margins to 1” all the way around and use the appropriate MLA heading and page numbering system (see Canvas for an example and template). I will be using the Holistic Rubric to assess this project. Together, Essay 2 first and final drafts are worth 15% of your final grade: 2% for the first draft, 13% for the final draft.

History & Philosophy Of Science

Is there a general coherent way to assess the claims of truth of scientific results in the light of scientific progress? If a theory is shown to be “falsified” in the sense of Karl Popper, could there still be elements of truth to the theory? Is only the current state of science “true?” Is it true even though we know it to be tentative? Are the elements of a theory that are modeled by simplifying assumptions true or merely useful conceptual tools? Do we have need of a general coherent concept of truth or is commonsense practical reasoning sufficient.

Please download the following group of articles from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on the subjects of realism, anti-realism and scientific revolutions. From this point of the course onward, you are to read these articles and comment on them on an ongoing basis, relating the content of these articles to the material in the Student Lecture Material and in the books by Kuhn and by Firestein. At least four separate page length comments should be submitted.

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/scientific-realism/

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/scientific-revolutions/

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/thomas-kuhn/

Read these articles carefully. To reiterate: I do not expect anyone to understand all of the details. I want you to have a basic grasp of them. I encourage everyone to search for additional articles on these topics that are simpler to read and understand. One goal of this course is to accustom you to examining very difficult material and to assess the basic concept even when you will not be able understand every detail. This is something that scientists reading publications in other fields have to do all of the time and very often even in their own fields.

Questions to address:

What is realism and anti-realism in the philosophy of science?

Discuss these very basic issues relevant to this Forum that are raised by the above articles: What is the status of entities that are used in scientific explanations. Do they represent real things that simply exist. Alternatively, are they abstractions or concepts that are useful for prediction but do not actually represent objective existing entities. Do scientific theories mix together some real things that exist and some useful representations that are not objectively real, or that cannot be independently shown to exist. If there are scientific revolutions, do they concern objective reality or representations of reality or both.  If the conventions of scientific communities determine what 'science' is at any given time, can we ever use the word 'true,' as ordinarily understood, in describing scientific theories and results or are we confined to use the word 'true' to mean 'accepted by the scientific community as of now.'

Present detailed reasoning and arguments of at least four distinct views on whether we can properly say that there are scientific revolutions. Present Kuhn's evidence for scientific revolutions and explain in detail how some others support his view and how some others oppose his view.

Present and summarize a current scientific topic of interest to you. Discuss whether realism and anti-realism philosophical positions are relevant to that scientific topic. Discuss whether the concept of scientific revolutions is relevant to that scientific topic. .

Present and summarize a SECOND current scientific topic of interest to you. Discuss whether realism and anti-realism philosophical positions are relevant to that scientific topic. Discuss whether the concept of scientific revolutions is relevant to that SECOND scientific topic.

As an example of the type of issue to address, consider whether Newton’s theory of gravity is “true” in any sense. Einstein’s gravitation theory is a more profound theory because it makes correct predictions that have been tested against experiment and observation for which Newton’s theory fails. Furthermore, Einstein’s theory examines concepts of space, time and simultaneity and, by making correct predictions, show that the assumptions that Newton made about simultaneity are untenable. Nonetheless, for many ordinary purposes, such as predicting the trajectory of a football, we can use Newton’s theory to calculate useful results. Einstein’s theory would yield only very minor differences that might be difficult to measure, and would be of no practical interest. On the other hand, to account for the orbit of the planet Mercury about the sun or even to accurately track cell phones using GPS satellites, Newton’s theory is inadequate and Einstein’s theory is our only tool to obtain accuracy.  In the future, Einstein’s theory might prove to be limited and a better theory might be invented. If this is the case, why should one use the concept of “truth” at all? Why not talk about what is useful? Why not just use concepts such as the following. “It works!” “It is the best we have come up with so far!” “No one has disproven this theory yet!” Is there actually a difference between truth and utility? Are our ordinary commonsense concepts of truth inadequate and unjustifiable in any context? Perhaps our ordinary commonsense concept of truth has developed because of carelessness in establishing criteria of verification. Perhaps the concept of ‘truth’ can be dispensed with as it is only in scientific endeavor that rigorous measurement and deduction is performed. If so, do we actually “know” anything?
