Final Project: Case Study

Ethical dilemmas permeate the criminal justice. At every level, in each segment of the system, people are exercising discretion that will influence the fate of an individual and/or the security of the community. Incongruous laws, regulations, policies and practices create conflicts and distort the basis upon which judgments are made. Very often these conflicts result in an ethical dilemma. Which is the appropriate course of action? What is the moral/ethical rational for the decisions that were made? What purposes or principles are served? This project will ask you to consider a sequence of decisions (do, or not do) all of which contribute, directly or indirectly the final scene.

For each of the three (3) scenarios, your assignment is to: 

• Examine each situation and describe the ethical and/or moral question,

• Describe what you believe to be the motivation of the actor and the potential consequences of BOTH/EACH options,

• Identify the decision you believe the actor SHOULD make, and

• Provide the ethical basis for your decision.

• Connect the ethical basis for your decision to ethical theories introduced at the beginning of the course and explain the rational for this connection.

• Each decision must be considered separately and not be influenced by earlier decisions and/or actions.

Prepare a narrative written submission relating to the scenario (above) covering the modules you have taken or are using for this assignment (at least 4 units are required for the full qualification including ‘Tools & Powers’). Your success will depend upon whether you can demonstrate that you have understood the important points covered in the modules.

Define, compare and contrast “Racism as a Set of Attitudes” and “Racism as a System of Power.” What is the difference between “race” and “racism?‘ Incorporate concepts of “ethnocentrism,” “prejudice,” “discrimination,” and “colorblind racism” into your analysis. Each student will be required to write a “policy report” or “issue paper” on a subject of his/her interest. This assignment is not the same as a heavily researched and footnoted term paper. It should be viewed as an 8-10 page briefing paper on a critical strategy or policy matter facing a senior decision maker in a private or public organization in the energy field.

The evidence-based paper will assist you in synthesizing major concepts from this class. Students should select a clinical question and use evidence-based literature to answer the clinical question. Major headings should include an overview of the clinical question, methods used to search the literature, synthesis of the results, discussion of findings in relation to the clinical population, suggestions for future research, and other headings as needed. Part of this paper includes a literature matrix consisting of the empirical evidence used to write the paper. The body of the paper should be between 12-15 pages.

2. Research the literature for an answer to your clinical question.

3. Write a 12-15 page paper summarizing the clinical question and answer. The paper should be in APA format. Major topics should include, at minimum:

• Overview of population and clinical question

• Search methods

• Discussion of findings

• Suggestions for future research
