Written Exercise

There is seldom a period when an organization can be complacent. Consumer and industrial organizations must continuously stay current on issues because forces can impact their future. It is the responsibility of the organizations marketing personnel to provide a plan on how to stay current when addressing environmental forces as well as influences.

Organizations need to be prepared to address market perceptions. Addressing these perceptions can be a challenge because there are times when we have our individual opinion about issues, but the market reaction may differ. While we should not ignore our opinions, there are times when we need to set our opinions aside so that we do what is in the organizations best interest. With this in mind please address the topic below.

TOPIC: How should corporations address social issues?

Please read the following:

Please respond to the following questions in an essay:

In your own words, please discuss how organizations (not you) should address this issue.
Using specific examples to support your answer.

What can organizations do to gain consumer confidence and boost business? Hint: Be sure to refer to your textbook for guidance.

Consider the following:

Your response should strongly reflect the content you learned in BUS 229 and I will be looking for specific terminology that you learned this semester while in this course.
Please include your name on the document you submit on Canvas.
Submissions should be 2-3 pages (see syllabus for details on format on Written Assignments)
Grammar, spelling, format, organization, flow, and content will be graded.
Please provide a full reference (author, publication name, date, article titles) for any additional references used. Use APA or MLA format.
If you use a Google Doc, then you must make sure it is viewable to me or you will be assigned a 0.

Social Classes: Status Symbols

Social Classes: Status Symbols

Background
Status symbols are those items in society which provide meaning and significance to a specific social class. For example, a BMW is often associated with wealth. An orange jumpsuit is often associated with a prisoner. Based on these illustrations, respond to the following questions as stipulated in the instructions.

Discussion Question(s)
Do those from lower or higher social classes try to manipulate perceptions of their status through their use of status symbols? Why would individuals participate in such behavior? Explain your reasoning, and provide specific examples where you have seen this behavior in society.
For example, do wealthy people ever try to minimize others’ perception of their wealth by driving modest sedans, wearing little or no jewelry, and buying off-the-rack clothing? Do poorer people ever try to increase others’ perceptions of their status by leasing vehicles they cannot afford to buy or wearing clothing that displays well-known logos (e.g., the Nike “swoosh”)?

Effective teachers always reflect on the lesson, and lesson outcomes.  Listen as the teacher reflects on this lesson, and compare it to the responses you have written on the observation worksheet. Use both the teachers reflections and your own observation when writing your overall observational reflection.

Sociology Case Study

Topic: Socialization: The Importance of Childhood
Case Study and Writing Outcomes
Consider the following case study, which was cataloged in Susan Curtiss’ (1977) study, Genie:

A girl named Genie was found in the United States in 1970. Genie’s father had kept her locked in a room from the age of 20 months until age 13. Genie was harnessed naked to an infant’s potty seat and left alone for hours and days through the years. When she was remembered at night, she was put to bed in a homemade straitjacket. There were no radios or televisions in the house, people spoke in hushed tones, and the only language Genie heard was an occasional obscenity from her father. He hated noise, and if Genie made any sound her father would growl at her like a dog or beat her with a stick. As a result of her confinement, Genie could not walk and her eyes could not focus beyond the boundaries of her room. She was malnourished, incontinent, and salivated constantly.

Although an extreme instance, the case study of Genie demonstrates the importance of childhood socialization. Further, this story reflects specific factors which are consistent with cases of poor (or even abusive instances of) socializationbiological, psychological, and social degeneration. In response to this case, prepare a written essay, which meets the following outcomes:

Define socialization and specifically childhood socialization.
Articulate the essential aspects of any childhood socialization process. (What is needed?)
Explain what happens when these aspects are nonexistent in an individual’s life.
Analyze whether these aspects were existent or nonexistent in your life.
Indicate the effect of having or not having these aspects in your life.
