PAGE 233 Writing for College, Writing for Life’ (2011, 2nd edition)

Check out Maureen Dowd's article "Our Own Warrior Princess" in pg. 233 of your text book 'Writing for College, Writing for Life' (2011, 2nd edition). For your convenience, I've provided a link for the same.

Our Own Warrior Princess Jennifer showed me her scar Friday. It's the most beautiful scar I've ever seen. A huge stapled gash on her stomach, shaped like the Mercedes logo. A red badge of courage. Jennifer is my niece, a 33-year-old lawyer. On Wednesday, she had half her liver taken out at Georgetown University Hospital to save the life of her uncle (my brother Michael), who had gotten hepatitis years ago from a tainted blood transfusion. The complicated and risky operation for the 2 two, side by side, went from 7:30 am. until after 10 pm. Then, when a Medivac helicopter arrived with a matching liver for another patient, the same team of doctors had to start on another emergency six-hour liver transplant. The night nurse told Jennifer she was an oddity. 3 "We do not see many live donors," she said. "Not many people are that generous." Or brave. Jennifer's morphine drip was not tached properly the first night after the operation, and no one knew it. She felt pain, but she did not want to be wimp by complaining too loudly. Instead, she was reaganesque, cracking jokes and wondering where the cute doctors were. She survived the first night after this excruciating operation of nature, like Xena the Warrior Princes. If all goes well, her liver will grow whole again in several weeks, as will Michael's half. Unlike her father, who charged people to nickel 6 to see his appendix scar when he was 10, she let me look for free. As we sat in her room, watching Marie Carey singing with a bare midriff on the "Today" show, I worried a little how she would take the disfigurement. She's a fitness fanatic, who works as a personal trainer in her spare 7 time. She's single, out in the cruel dating world. And we live in an airbrush culture, where women erase lines with Botox, wrinkles with lasers, and fat with liposuction. I told Jen scars are sexy; consider that great love scene in "Lethal Weapon 3" when Mel Gibson and Rene Russo, the police officers, compare scars. Assignment 1: Business Acquisitions

Use the Internet or Strayer library to research two (2) publically traded U.S. companies, and download their financial statements. Assume that you are the CEO of one of the selected companies. You are responsible for gaining control over the other company. You have three (3) choices, either of which you believe that the Board of Directors will support.

  • Choice 1: Your company acquires 35% of the voting stock of the target company.
  • Choice 2: Your company acquires 51% of the voting stock of the target company.
  • Choice 3: Your company acquires 100% of the voting stock of the target company.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Provide a brief background introduction on both the company that you are working for and the company that you are responsible for gaining control over.
  2. Specify the overall manner in which the acquisition fits into your company’ strategic direction. Next, identify at least three (3) possible synergies that could occur as a result of the proposed acquisition.
  3. Select two (2) out of the three (3) choices provided in the above scenario, and analyze the key accounting requirements for each of the two (2) choices that you selected. Next, suggest one (1) strategy in which you would prepare the financial statements for your company after the acquisition under each of the two (2) choices.
  4. Select the choice that you consider to be the most advantageous to your company. Explain to the Board of Directors at least three (3) reasons why your selected choice is the most advantageous to the company.
  5. Assume two (2) years after the acquisition, your Board of Directors wants to offer the shares back to the public in hopes of making a large profit. Assume that in each of the two (2) years your company and the target company have had exactly the same reported net income as they did in the year of acquisition. Determine the type of value, (e.g., cost of fair value) that you would use to report the subsidiary’s net asset in the subsidiary’s financial statements, which the company will distribute to the public with the public offering. Provide support for your rationale.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Examine the various methods of accounting for an investment in equity shares of another company.
  • Analyze the accounting requirements for consolidated financial information on the date of acquisition and subsequent to the date of acquisition.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in advanced accounting.
  • Write clearly and concisely about advanced accounting using proper writing mechanics.

Obstacles to the chances to live a healthy life may be unjustly focused among certain populations, such as minorities, low-income populations and the less educated

Obstacles to the chances to live a healthy life may be unjustly focused among certain populations, such as minorities, low-income populations and the less educated. The influences of socioeconomic factors on health patterns and outcomes are often intertwined and manifested in the result of health disparities. These influences also place people in certain populations at “risk” or “vulnerable” to health disparities. A at risk group tend to be those who are identified with common risk factors or exposure that presents as a threat to health. For example, the town I recently move to would be considered a high risk group for cardiovascular disease. A good portion of the society are overweight and hypertensive. Their diets are consumed with high fat, fried food and many of them are smokers. All populations have some risk, but risks for multiple illness conditions and premature death are much higher for specific populations (Maurer and Smith, 2013). However, not everyone in a high risk group will succumb to the risk.

According to content.healthaffairs.org (2017) Vulnerability is “the susceptibility to harm, results from an interaction between the resources available to individuals and communities and the life challenges they face.”  A vulnerable population would be one that may not necessarily have a disease, but have social or personal conditions that lowers their ability to deal with a disease. They have difficulty accessing health care to address health concerns, and are more likely to experience poor outcome. For example, a person living below the poverty line and homeless is considered “vulnerable” if this person becomes ill he has no resources to buy medications or a place to recover once discharged from the hospital.

Explain why members of these groups cannot advocate for themselves or why advocating for these groups would be beneficial. What would you advocate for?

The people in these groups are unable to advocate for themselves because of many reasons. Some of these reasons are low economic resources, time and knowledge.  Typically, these groups have decrease knowledge in regards to options, treatments, and available resources or lack thereof. The community health nurse can advocate on their behalf by addressing organizations, governments, and community leaders concerning the issues and the needs of these groups. The nurse advocating for these groups is beneficial to society as a whole.  Advocacy can narrow the gap between fair treatments of these group in the health care setting and decrease health disparities. By doing so the nurse would strengthen the community as a whole. I would advocate for fair treatments amongst minorities and immigrants in the healthcare setting. I notice in these population groups treatments are not explained in full detail in comparison to other highly educated groups.  Patients sign consent without full understanding. I have notice lack of use in translation phones by doctors and nurses which would have help patients understand more.
