BUS101 Assessment 1 Outline Version 1 / June 2016 Page 1 of 5

Management Communication

In today’s workplace the largest diversity of generations is represented than at any other time in history. With this diversity comes new challenges. The purpose of this assessment is to work as a team to conduct web-based research on the specific challenges, and also opportunities, inherent in managing – and working in – a multigenerational workforce. The existence of a multigenerational workforce affects two areas of human resources: retention and motivation. Employees of diverse age groups react differently to programs designed to address these two areas, and also have differing expectations. To that end companies may need to rethink their existing practices.

Assessment task

The HRM Director of Company ABC is aware of the challenges involved in effectively managing different generations and seeks your guidance to develop a report that harmonises the generational divide across the organisation.

Please follow these guidelines to complete the assessment:

  1. This is a group-based assessment. You will be assigned to a group of four students. Internal students will be given their group in the tutorial; external students will be notified via email. Please note: 90% of the grade will be assigned to the individual and 10% to the group.
  1. The purpose of this assessment is for you to engage in web-based research. It is widely understood that there are multiple generations in the workplace. Today, the three generations most represented are: baby boomers – born between 1941 – 1960; generation X – born between 1961 – 1976; and millennials (generation Y) born between 1977 – 1992. Each student in your group needs to select ONE of the three generations. The fourth person will introduce the topic of diversity, its causes and consequences and the implications and challenges for a multigenerational workplace.
  1. Start your web-based research with a search of popular business publications, even trade journals, professional journals and current affairs journals, for any information about the multigenerational workplace. Finally, use academic research to support your findings in relation to your selected theme.
  1. Each student needs to find 8-10 secondary sources for his/her section. Please note you are expected to use a minimum of four refereed academic journals. You will be shown how to tell if a journal is peer reviewed/refereed. Do not include more than 10 references per student.
  1. Document using SCU Harvard format.
  1. I encourage you to write a first draft of this memo at least one week prior to the due date to ensure adequate time for revision. Please be aware that the writing quality and appropriate referencing will be marked as well as the content.
  1. Submit Assessment 4 to Turnitin via the Blackboard site no later than the due date: Friday 6th October, 11.00pm (QLD time).
  1. Please note: only one student submits on behalf of their group.
  1. Refer to the Marking Criteria Guide and Marking Rubric located in this document.

Computer failure will not be accepted as a reason for missing an assessment deadline: you are strongly advised to backup all of your work, for example on a USB flash drive, to ensure that you are still able to submit to a deadline in the event of a computer related failure.

  1. In cases where there are no accepted mitigating circumstances as determined through Special Consideration procedures, late submission of assessment tasks will lead automatically to the imposition of a penalty. Penalties will be applied for late submissions as soon as the deadline is reached.
  1. Students are reminded of the extremely serious view the University takes with regard to plagiarism and are strongly advised to read the university’s policies on academic integrity and the penalties associated with academic misconduct (see: https://policies.scu.edu.au/ view.current.php?id=00142, as well as information in the UIG).

Part 1 – Question 1 – Doing Ethics Technique

Part 1 – Question 1 – Doing Ethics Technique
This session we have restricted the cases to the following three (3).
Part 1 – Question 1 – Doing Ethics Technique (20 marks)
Analyse the above case study using the Doing Ethics Technique.
Part 1 – Question 2 – Ethical Theory question (10 marks)
We ask the students to analyse the above case study using either two or four classical ethical theories. So, it is always from the
four classical ethical theories such as utilitarianism, deontology, virtue and contract.
i. Jean, a statistical database programmer, is trying to write a large statistical program needed by her company. Programmers in this company are encouraged to write about their work and to publish their algorithms in professional journals. After months of tedious programming, Jean has found herself stuck on several parts of the program. Her manager, not recognising the complexity of the problem, wants the job completed within the next few days. Not knowing how to solve the problems, Jean remembers that a coworker had given her source listings from his current work and from an early version of a commercial software package developed at another company. On studying these programs, she sees two areas of code which could be directly incorporated into her own program. She uses segments of code from both her co-worker and the commercial software, but does not tell anyone or mention it in the documentation. She completes the project and turns it in a day ahead of time. Australian Computer Society (2014)

ii. Company X has just signed a business agreement with Company Y, which entitles both of them to access each other clients’ records. Mr. Faisal, a software programmer at Company Z, was assigned the task of developing a software program that handles the access and retrieval of records from each Company’s database system into the other. A first run of the software on real data indicated that the work was well within the state of the art, and no difficulties were found or anticipated. Several weeks later and during a normal test on the software developed, Faisal discovered a serious ‘security hole’ in the database system of Company Y by which hackers can easily obtain confidential information about clients. He was convinced that while the software he developed could correctly accomplish the task, the code in Company Y’s database system could not be trusted as the security hole posed a threat even on Company X’s database system. Faisal told his manager about the problem and explained its significance. The manager’s response was, -That’s not our problem; let’s just be sure that our software functions properly.- Faisal is not sure what to do. Refusing to work on the project means disobeying his manager’s orders. Continuing to work on the project, means disobeying one of God’s commands, this requires him to be truthful and sincere in his dealings. Australian Computer Society (2014)

iii. You are a computer programmer working for a small business that provides specialized financial services to local, mostly small businesses. You have been working for company X for about six months. Recently X has been occupied with reengineering the inventory system of a local hardware chain, ABC Hardware. The objective is to enable ABC to keep better track of their inventory, to be more responsive to changes in customer demand, and to adopt a “just in time” strategy to reduce inventory. Your supervisor calls you into his office. “Do you know of any existing software products to help ABC keep better track of its inventory?” You mention a particular product that you have worked with in another job and point out that ABC could use it without any modification. The only drawback, you point out, is that this software is somewhat expensive. Your supervisor leans back in his chair, puffs on his cigar and says, “That’s no problem. We have that software. Why don’t you just install it on ABC’s computers?” You diplomatically indicate that this would violate the licensing agreement X has with the developers of the software. “Do it anyway,” your supervisor says. “Nobody’s going to find out, and ABC is a very important client. We need to do all we can to keep them happy.” William J. Frey (2010)

PART 3: ESSAY (30 marks) 1500 words.
This session we have restricted the essay topics to the following three (3). you to prepare all three.
i. A software development company has just produced a new software package that incorporates the new tax laws and figures taxes for both individuals and small businesses. The president of the company knows that the program has a number of bugs. He also believes the first firm to put this kind of software on the market is likely to capture the largest market share. The company widely advertises the program. When the company actually ships a CD, it includes a disclaimer of responsibility for errors resulting from the use of the program. The company expects it will receive a number of complaints, queries, and suggestions for modification. The company plans to use these to make changes and eventually issue updated, improved, and debugged versions. The president argues that this is general industry policy and that anyone who buys version 1.0 of a program knows this and will take proper precautions. Because of bugs, a number of users filed incorrect tax returns and were penalised by the ATO.
ii. Over the years a number of systems have been developed which record coded information across a range of factors about disabilities in ethnic communities. A new coding convention has been developed to rationalise the inconsistent coding conventions of these legacy systems. The new coding convention uses codes which had different meanings in the legacy systems. This means that time series analysis gives inconsistent results, particularly showing both under and over reporting of numbers of particular disability categories. This is significant when making policies for people based on the size of the communities. To fix this would take a lot of work and expense, and management has decreed that historical systems will not be fixed, but new systems will all adopt the new coding convention.
iii. Joe is working on a project for his computer science course. The instructor has allotted a fixed amount of computer time for this project. Joe has run out of time, but has not yet finished the project. The instructor can not be reached. Last year Joe worked as a student programmer for the campus computer center and is quite familiar with procedures to increase time allocations to accounts. Using what he learned last year, he is able to access the master account. Then he gives him additional time and finishes his project.

CULTURE 4 1 ATH 111 Final Project Guidelines

ATH 111 Final Project Guidelines and Rubric

Overview Anthropologists will often conduct research to objectively evaluate cultural practices. Cultural anthropology is the branch of anthropology that deals specifically with human culture. Studying cultural anthropology provides a great amount of insight into other cultures. It can also shed light on and create a deeper understanding and appreciation of one’s own culture. For example, is the culture that you are observing similar to your own culture? If so, you might not even recognize cultural nuances, because they seem “normal” to you. On the other hand, if you see behavior or hear language and slang that you do not recognize, it is likely because the culture differs from your own. In this course, you were introduced to cultural anthropology and the anthropological concepts that are used to study and understand people, their culture, and their behavior. In the final project film study, you will have the chance to become a cultural anthropologist. The film study is your opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of what culture is, the role it plays in people’s lives, as well as how it influences behavior. In order to do so, you will need to recognize and describe the culture portrayed in the film and discuss cultural values and norms that you observe. You will use anthropological concepts to analyze and explain the behavior of characters, or conflict between the characters, in your chosen film. You will also compare the cultures represented in the film to your own culture. Select one film from the approved film list. You may select a different film with instructor approval. Select three of the following anthropological core concepts to discuss in your film study:

 Assimilation

 Cultural symbols/symbolism

 Enculturation

 Ethnocentrism

 Gender

 Globalization

 Kinship

 Marriage

 Modernization

 Political systems

 Power

 Religion/systems of belief

Talent management is critical to any organizations success, especially leadership positions

Talent management is critical to any organizations success, especially leadership positions. Putting the right people in the right position can really improve morale, productivity and in the Army readiness. I'm interested in how diversity effects talent management. I do believe the military is the greatest organization on the face of the planet and diversity has had a huge impact on our strength and success. The factors listed in the Workforce Diversity presentation that motive organization to diversify their workforce may have a completive edge but at what cost? What would the NFL look like if they were required to diversify their teams?

Tri-ennial process itself

Tri-ennial process itself.  What purpose does it serve? Is it needed?  Is it effective? Is it efficient? etc.

300 words or more

Experience is an excellent teacher in the subject of leadership

Experience is an excellent teacher in the subject of leadership. People learn what to do from trying something themselves and/or watching others. We may tend to base our understanding of leadership on the best experiences, those times when we lead well or watch as others lead well.

This reflective assignment provides a way for you to write about your “personal best” leadership experience. Be sure to include these three items in your post:   1. Describe the context of your best leadership situation/experience. Where/when did it take place?  2. List 2-3 important actions or behaviors you took as a leader in this situation. In other words, what things did you do as a leader that made a difference in this situation?  3. What words would you use to describe this experience? Describe your takeaways from the experience.  [No citations/references required]  Instructions:  Your post should be at least 250 words and submitted in the text box (not as a Word document).  You may also present your work as a PowerPoint presentation, or a YouTube video. Be creative and have fun!
