What is a critical thinking essay?

In this assignment, your goal is to think critically and write about Stakeholder Management and Corporate Performance.

Sociologist Erving Goffman has pointed out that all social groups, including professionals, develop a protective attitude toward members of their group, even when what some of the members do is seen as morally wrong. A sense of loyalty to the group often overrides what they would otherwise deem immoral.

Consider the arguments for and against exposing Stakeholders with whom you are personally close or with whom you have close professional ties. Develop a position on this issue that could serve as a guide for anyone in such a position with regard to Corporate Performance.

Essay Guidelines:

What is a critical thinking essay?

Many college assignments require you to support a thesis. The concept of a critical thinking essay is that you start without an end in mind. You don’t necessarily know how you feel about a subject or what you want to say about the subject … you allow the research and your own thinking to determine the outcome. This is writing to learn rather than writing to prove what you know.

The critical thinking essay has you look at and contribute to a range of arguments rather than just one at a time. Critical thinking essays consider the strengths and weaknesses of various solutions to a problem or various answers to a question. It requires thinking … not information reporting.

The critical thinking essay starts with a question, not a thesis. Your essay shows how your thinking changes as you research a topic. For example, when you begin researching capital punishment, you may be in favor of the death penalty because it is a deterrent. Then you may find some studies that question whether it has a deterrent effect and that may influence your thinking. You don’t have to know what you think about your topic when you start writing your critical thinking essay.

Critical thinking essay format.

Essays are shorter pieces of writing. Therefore, essays are (by nature) concise and require you to be clear and to the point. This means that there is no room for your thoughts to wander or stray;  you must be deliberate and stay on topic.

Perhaps it is helpful to think of an essay in terms of a conversation or debate with a classmate. If you and I were discussing whether or not there should be a death penalty in the US, there would be a beginning, middle and end to our conversation. As with a conversation, your essay must be complete, and logically so, leaving no doubt as to your intent or argument.

Remember, you’re talking about your ideas and thought processes, so it is appropriate to use the first person. To help you stay on topic, your critical thinking essay should be organized as follows.

Essay Outline

Introduction (generally 1 paragraph)

a) Focus on explaining the topic.

Body (minimum of 2 paragraphs, but use as many as necessary. Several short paragraphs are better than 1-2 overly long paragraphs)

You may find it helpful to write your body before your write your introduction and conclusion.

Examine all aspects of the topic. Show your knowledge and grasp of the material you have read.

a) Discuss the differing opinions of the topic as reflected in the research.

b) Discuss any issues or problems.

c) Did you have enough information?

d) Did the research raise issues you hadn’t considered?

e) Did the research contain confusing, incomplete or contradictory information?

f) Explain how your research influenced your thinking.

g) If your thinking has changed, what changed it?

h) If your thinking has not changed, how did what you learn support your original opinion?

i) If you’re not sure about your opinion, what information might you need to form an opinion?

Conclusion (generally 1 paragraph)

a) The conclusion wraps up the essay and should not introduce new information

b) Refer back to your main ideas or points and reiterate your answer to the question.

Use the following guidelines: .

  • Develop a clear introduction, body and conclusion. Use paragraph format and transitions. Focus on quality of writing and content. Your paper should be three paragraphs minimum. Generally, a strong paper will be a minimum of 2 pages.
  • Use APA format with a title page, in-text citations and references. No abstract required.

Time Management

This assignment is about you. It is an assessment of your abilities and traits.

Every week you will complete a personal assessment–your own personal leadership framework.

This assignment will help you figure out what style of leadership you have been following and whether this style works for you.

Through this assignment, you will find the various approaches of leadership that complement each other. There is no one theory that describes the only way to be an effective leader. Each theory focuses on different issues, but they all help you to better understand how to become a successful leader.

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about Time Management Assessment.

Note: You can also use the following link to access the Time Management Assessment: Time Management Assessment

Based on your research and understanding, create a paper in a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document that:

Incorporates your time management self-assessment information and the concepts learned this week (leadership theories, leadership versus management, professional nursing organizations, and time management.

Includes identification of one leadership theory, which you feel best describes your leadership style.

Includes a comparison between leadership and management

Includes a suggestion on how to apply this week’s concepts to the work environment.

Do you believe IA should be as concerned with the law enforcement officer who fails to report a known ethics violation versus the person suspected of the ethics violation?

Most criminal justice agencies have some version of an internal affairs (IA) department. Hollywood has long portrayed IA as the enemy, investigating and looking to reprimand their own brothers and sisters in law enforcement, corrections, and the courts. Personnel who talk or report issues to IA are often characterized as rats or snitches, and there is said to be an unwritten rule known as the blue wall of silence.

Do you believe IA should be as concerned with the law enforcement officer who fails to report a known ethics violation versus the person suspected of the ethics violation? Should they (if proven to be guilty) both be reprimanded? Explain your position.

Do you think an anthropological perspective might be of practical use in solving such worldwide problems?

  1. Since the launching of the first satellites into orbit and the start of the Internet, the telecommunications revolution has changed how humans interact, work, entertain, and even make and maintain friendships. Can you imagine a world in which cyberspace and social media are supervised and censored by the government? How would you and your friends adjust to that new media environment? What steps would you take if you felt impelled to help prevent or reverse such control?
  2. Reflecting on the human condition before and after the start of the Anthropocene epoch that began with the industrial revolution two centuries ago, how do the pre-Anthropocene challenges our species faced compare to those of today?
  3. Considering the relationship between structural power and structural violence, does your own lifestyle— in terms of the clothing and food you buy, the transportation you use, and so on—reflect or have an effect on structural violence in the globalization process?
  4. The World Health Organization, UNESCO, Oxfam, and Amnesty International are global institutions concerned with checking structural violence and human rights violations. Confronted with genocidal conflicts, famines, epidemics, and torture of political prisoners, activists in these organizations try to improve the human condition. Do you think an anthropological perspective might be of practical use in solving such worldwide problems? Can you think of an example?

What moral obligation, beyond the scope of your job, do you have to your employer?

Business Law

1.

The goal of intellectual property law is to encourage innovation.  Individuals and companies will be far less likely to create new or improved products, services, and works such as movies and albums if others can readily copy and profit from their efforts.

Choose one of the scenarios below and determine which type of intellectual property law applies and whether it would, in fact, provide any remedy.  Remember to identify and explain the elements necessary to claim protection as intellectual property, why you think those elements are or are not present, and what other information you would need to make this determination.

  • William Writer has developed a great idea for a novel. It will feature a young magician named Henry Pryor who attends a special high school for magicians. Henry has many interesting friends and even searches for the Philosopher’s Rock.
  • Karen Kitchens is a fantastic cook. Her best dish is fried chicken. Her fried chicken is so good that her friends suggest she start a restaurant. After some thought Karen agrees. She plans to open Kitchen’s Fried Chicken, but because the name is a bit long she decided to shorten it to KFC. Her sign will be red and white and feature an image of Karen’s father, a white-haired old man with a goatee.
  • Sandy Secretary works for a huge cola company. The company is famous for its secret formula that it has used for over 100 years. One day while looking for something in the boss’s office, Sandy finds a piece of paper that lists the secret formula. Sandy secretly makes a copy of the secret formula and offers to sell it to a competitor.

2.

Law is always evolving.  It slowly changes over time in response to its environment.  In business, new types of products, services and practices drive the development of law as it is forced to adapt to situations we can’t even think about today.  A great example is the “gig” economy created by companies such as Uber and Lyft and their “do it yourself” ride service.

What new developments do you think will present the need to rethink and re-evaluate how business law concepts apply today or in the future?

Business Ethics

3.

Whistleblowing is when a person exposes any kind of information or activity that is deemed illegal, unethical, or not correct within an organization that is either private or public. While whistleblowing is the right thing to do it can often come with repercussions to the whistleblower. Provide a response to the following questions:

  • What moral obligation, beyond the scope of your job, do you have to your employer? Explain your answer.
  • Depending on how a company reacts, discuss how whistleblowing could affect a company’s future?

4.

Discuss two (2) pros and cons of affirmative action and whether or not you believe it is still needed today. Provide support for your response.

Explain what is meant by wage, gender, and race discrimination in the workplace. Next, propose a plan employers can implement to prevent these forms of discrimination from occurring within the workplace.

5.

Companies are expected to act ethically and ensure their employees are also acting ethically. However, as we know the level of ethics expected and those practiced are not always the same. Take a moment to share your thoughts on the following questions about ethics.

  • Do you believe that ethics can be taught? Why or why not?
  • If you were the CEO of a company how would you ensure employees operated at a high ethical standard?

Each question needs 4 sentences and does NOT have to be cited!

NSG4055 Illness & Disease Management Project 1

Introduction

While treating the chronically ill, a major challenge is developing a plan of care that addresses the specific needs of a patient and a caregiver. You need to be in close touch with patients and their support group, family and peers, to come up with an ideal plan.

In this course project, you are going to develop a plan of care for a chronic illness group of your choice using the Healthy People 2020 Topics. While executing the tasks of this project, remember that while you need to give a general overview of the biomedical considerations of the case, the focus should always be on the psychosocial elements. Your perspective in this care plan should be the patient’s goals rather than those of the medical team.

Each week, you will complete a part of this project. You will submit a final completed project in Week 5. Be sure to take the time to carefully complete each of the weekly assignments and then put it all together in Week 5.

Ensure that you save a copy of this course project after you have submitted it at the end of this course. You are expected to resubmit this project along with the other course projects at the end of the Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) details will be provided in the Capstone course.

Identifying a Group

Identify an area of chronic illness of specific interest to you and that is represented as a Healthy People 2020 topic (healthypeople.gov). Explain your choice and your interest in it. Prepare a questionnaire utilizing your knowledge of health and illness, with the aim of acquiring all information you need from patients to prepare a plan of care for the specific illness group. Submit your information in a 4- to 5-page Microsoft Word document. In addition to your questionnaire, be sure to include the following details in your paper.

  • Chronic Illness of interest
  • Morbidity and comorbidity of the disease
  • Impact of the chronic illness and patient morbidity and the affect to overall health of nation
  • Healthy People 2020 goals and objectives for specific illness group

How does the author fail? What did you find in your review of the literature that brings you to that conclusion?

You are required to locate, read, and critique a peer review article on an advanced technology used in corrections’ facilities to reduce the likelihood of contraband being introduced into jails and prisons.

The first major element of this assignment is, of course, the selection of a topic that is appropriate for the course or the audience. Next, you should identify the premise(s) of your argument in support of the article or refuting what the article purports. The next step is to apply a proper analysis, which is predicated upon some knowledge of the topic, and a review of literature containing contravening arguments made by other researchers or experts. This is followed by putting forth your critical evaluation of the premise(s) of the article under review and supporting your position supported by the literature. Some of the questions you could ask include the questioned listed below.

§ What biographical data about the author of the article is important?

1) What are the purpose, tone, and format of the article?

2) How can the work be interpreted?

3) Based upon your review of the literature, is there any information in the article that is inaccurate or incomplete?

4) In what way was the article successful, or did the author succeed in what he or she was trying to accomplish?

5) How does the author fail? What did you find in your review of the literature that brings you to that conclusion?

6) Are there any historical, psychological, geographical, gender, racial, cultural, religious, or sexual considerations that have an impact on the article?

7) The article critique must be in APA style and include the items listed below:

8) a title page in APA format,

9) an abstract in APA format,

10)content that begins on page three, and

11)the APA references page(s).

This assignment is a minimum of two pages of content, not counting the title page, abstract, and references pages.

Identify at least two ways this information may affect a victim.

National databases such as VINELink (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) provide updates regarding the incarceration status of offenders. By registering, victims receive updates when an offender is transferred, released, or leaves custody for any other reason. Victims can receive text messages, emails, or even phone calls regarding these updates.

Identify at least two ways this information may affect a victim.

In your replies to your classmates, illustrate additional resources that may be beneficial to victims, based on the initial post.
