Supply Chain Management: Economic Order Quantity and Safety Stock

Supply Chain Management: Economic Order Quantity and Safety Stock

A. Based on the Microwave Inventory Case, using the spreadsheet perform a sensitivity analysis and evaluate potential additional benefits focusing in Economic Order Quantity and Safety Stock. See the attached spreadsheet to be fill out. On the spreadsheet perform the following:

1.Calculate the current cost of IMI’s inventory practices using the CURRENT tab of the template provided.

2. What would be the potential benefits of selecting both the production batch sizes and the reorder points more scientifically? Do this by completing columns B through H of the ANALYSIS tab of the template provided. Using the concepts of Economic Order Quantity and Reorder Point, explain the difference between this model and IMI’s current practice.

3. What if IMI was able to fully standardize the heavy-duty model to the point where the language and power supply customizing features could be added in a modular fashion immediately before shipping to the warehouse that needs them? You consulted with the production superintendent, who indicated that this could be done, but that it would add one day to the ship time to add these customizing features to the standard microwave just prior to shipping.

Consider it this way. IMI maintains a warehouse right next to their factory and they store inventory for models A, B, C, D, E, and F. Therefore they have to maintain separate inventory for each of the models. If they standardize to a single model, it may take them a day to ship, but they only need to keep one type of microwave in their warehouse.

For this part use the SINGLE MODEL column of the ANALYSIS tab and consider the impact RISK POOLING has should IMI combine all models. Using the inventory concepts we discussed in class, explain to IMI why they might achieve some cost benefit by embracing the idea of replacing all of their models with a single model.

4. Assuming that you have now convinced IMI to standardize on a single model of microwave, investigate other opportunities that IMI may have to reduce costs or improve customer service. Look at the components of total cost (not limited to transportation time, order cost, supply or demand variability) and make a recommendation to IMI on where else they may want to focus their efforts. Justify your recommendations.

5. Perform the sensitivity analysis and evaluate potential benefits in terms of Economic Order Quantity and Safety Stock.

6. On the spreadsheet add a column and consider:

  • Reducing set-up times
  • Reducing production or lead times?
  • What about variances

B. Using the information of the spread sheet analyzed the inventory situation.

Based on the spreadsheet summarized results and deliver in form or report.

  • what you have discovered
  • Draw conclusions and summarize findings
  • In what other areas could you invest?

Report shall be professionally structured, well-organized, insightful, start with an executive overview, and conclude by emphasizing the most important parts of the analysis

Passing along Costs

Passing along Costs

In 2010, the costs of powdered milk, cocoa, coffee, and wheat rose at double-digit rates.

Wildfires in Russia had caused wheat and other crops to shoot up. Cocoa prices reached a 33-year high in July, helped by speculative activities, including the London-based commodity trading house Armajaro Holdings Ltd.'s move to store 240,000 metric tons of cocoa, worth roughly $ 1 billion. Tea prices went up significantly on account of higher fuel costs and poor harvests in India.

Big consumer-goods companies often find ways to offset the commodity price increases, sometimes through cost-cutting and sometimes by passing along higher prices to retailers and consumers. JM Smucker Co. raised prices about 9 percent on products in its coffee lineup, which includes Folgers, Dunkin 'Donuts, and Millstone brands. In response to rising milk prices, Danone, which makes yogurt products, increased prices in markets including Mexico and Poland. Unilever's chief financial officer noted that the costs have gone up, and Unilever has already sent that chain down on its consumer tea products.yogurt products, increased prices in markets including Mexico and Poland. Unilever’s chief financial officer noted that tea costs have gone up, and Unilever has already sent that higher cost down the chain on its consumer tea products.

1.Suppose the price of coffee beans increases by $ 0.20 per pound. What is the effect of this raw material increase on the demand for roasted coffee? If one pound produces 50 cups of coffee, would the price of a cup of coffee rise by $ 0.01? Explain.

2. The article reports that JM Smucker Co. plans to increase its coffee prices by 9 percent. If Smucker has a lot of rivals but has a brand name that has value, will this 9 percent increase in retail prices imply that profit will rise by 9 percent?

3.Is it optimal for a firm to slash prices to retain market share? Is it cutting prices during a recession and then raising them in a good strategy?

Story: Write an advance story on an upcoming event

Story: Write an advance story on an upcoming event. Target your story to readers of the Daily Helmsman. I chose the food and wine festival in Memphis.

Remember: A well-written advance story makes readers feel like they’ve been to the event, even though the event hasn’t yet happened. Your story needs to give readers more insight and information than they would find on a Facebook page or an organization’s website.

Length: 400 words

Lead: Write a two-paragraph news summary lead. Each paragraph should be one sentence.

Sources: Include at least two sources, but you may have more than two. One source must be a super source. (A super source is an expert.)

Direct quotes: Include at least three direct quotes and one paraphrased quote.

Photos: File two photos in the dropbox with cutlines related to your advance story. For the advance story (only), you may use "stock" images or, if it's an annual event, photos from previous year's events. Be sure that the cutlines are accurate and representative of the photo. If you are taking your photos, you will need to take a number of photos in order to have two photos suitable for publication.

Headline: Include a headline with your story.

Writing Tips: Be sure to include:

Headliners for the event and information that will interest readers the most. For annual events, the information that is most important probably is the “what’s new this year.”

Background and history of the event.

For fundraisers, include fundraising goals.

How the event relates to national or international efforts (if it does). For instance, if you are writing about the local Race for the Cure, you would explain how the local race connects to the national organization.

Date, time, place, and expected attendance.

It is not necessary to include a lot of specific ticket information, as online stories link to appropriate websites and venues.

Story Structure:

Use a news summary lead that includes the event’s “headliner” information. A news summary lead should be one sentence.

Most likely, the nut graph (or summary graph) will include some history of the event and how the event relates to the bigger picture.

Use the basic story structure of lead; second graph that adds detail to the lead; strong quote; nut graph; background; body of the story; and closer. A good way to close an advance story is with a direct quote.

Be accurate, concise and clear.

Make sure each paragraph contains only ONE idea and connects (like a train!) to the previous graph and the graph that follows.

Keep paragraphs short.

Assignment 1: Train the Trainers

Assignment 1: Train the Trainers

Here's What Happened . . .

After your report was presented to the Centervale chief of police, he realized there is a need for training for law enforcement officials. Using the Simpson case as the basis, a proposal was presented and approved by the mayor to fund a special project.

You have been asked to produce a written training curriculum to educate the trainers of Centervale's law enforcement officials about dealing with crime victims. The chief has asked you to cover both stranger violence and intimate violence. Your curriculum will supply trainers with information that would assist them in training new recruits, first responders, and detectives.

Here's What You Need to Do . . .

· Prepare three short scenarios that could be used as training material. In the training material, include the three areas of stalking, intimate violence, and stranger violence.

· Following each scenario, generate questions that the trainers could present. Be sure to offer answers to these questions, with support, as a handy guide for the trainers.

· Finally, design a summary for the trainers that they can use to end their training. The summary should:

· Highlight the differences between criminology and victimology and why it is important for law enforcement officials to have a basic knowledge of both. Use examples from your created scenarios as support. Identify the relevant theories that pertain to violence against women. How can law enforcement make use of these facts?

· Explain the importance of law enforcement learning more about proper treatment of victims in order to ensure the system does not revictimize them. Consider how interviews, order of protection service, time until arrest, safety planning, and lethality assessments play into this treatment.

· Create a curriculum:

· Develop three to five questions for each scenario. Focus on relevant victimology or criminology theories, victims' rights, lethality assessments, and proper treatment of victims.

· Develop potential answers for those questions, including the reasoning behind those answers. Hypothesize how past inadequacies in victims' rights, as they pertain to law enforcement, might have led to different endings to the scenarios.

· Predict the danger level for each victim and connect to the necessary actions of the advocate or the detective that will come from this alert.

· Create a solution that would properly treat victims in order to ensure the system does not revictimize them. In creating a solution, consider these questions:

· What can you recommend should be done for the victim?

· What can you recommend should be done to the suspect?

· What resources are available to assist law enforcement in working with victims?

Note: Use APA-formatted in-text citations and external sources that are referred to on a corresponding reference page.
